Steve Harris Breaks The Silence

Posted By:  triverse @ Today, 12:32 AM
Check out the interview that Publishing Executive did with Steve Harris about the relaunch of EGM and the methods Mr. Harris is going to use.  Interesting read (it really is about a page long but spread over 3 pages).

Retromags Presents July In History

Posted By:  triverse @ Yesterday, 05:57 PM
July, the month that America celebrates independence is upon us.  Continuing on in the tradition of taking you back, whether it is good or bad, is about to begin.  Just so everyone knows, this month Bill "The Game Doctor" Kunkel is celebrating a birthday (if you would like to participate in a special birthday gift please contact me or post that you are wanting to help).

On with the show!

July 1999:

In Rome, Hicham El Guerrouj, ran a 3:43:13 mile, that is under 4 minutes there folks.  Fastest mile ever ran so far.  In movies, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released, Lance Armstrong makes his first win of the Tour de France.

In Retromags related news, we have the following July 1999 issue available"

Members that donated a magazine and time this month include:

July 1994

Brazil wins the 1994 Fifa World Cup (I think EA may have made a game with a similar name, not sure) and the planet Jupiter was pummeled with fragments of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 over the period 6 days.

As far as Retromags goes, we have these issues available:

Members that donated a magazine and time this month include:

July 1989

Seinfeld makes it's premiere on television and Nintendo launches a little thing called Gameboy.

Here at Retromags, you can relive some of that with these issues:

You may have noticed that there is no mention of people losing their lives in this post, I think we have had enough losses for awhile announced here and I have chosen to focus on the good things that have happened in history.

Dino Crisis Turns 10 Years Old Today

Posted By:  triverse @ Jul 1 2009, 07:22 AM
How many of you out there have played Capcom's dinosaur themed survival horror (well the first one was anyhow, the rest were more action games) game?  Dino Crisis was released in Japan today so why not hit up your favorite used game store and get a copy?  PM me if you want some recommendations of some trustworthy online stores.

Anyone have any stories to tell?

This week, we only had one issue released.  Retromags celebrated a milestone (4 years old now), I had E-Day and the other mods help hold down Phillyman and get that interview-although E-Day, the excessive tickliing was a little wearisome.   blink.gif  The world said goodbye in their own way to Michael Jackson this week, some are still mourning in some way, we all will be.  On a happier note, Sonic turned 18 and an extremely big project that will surely be interesting to most of the members here got under way (more on that next month).  Waremonger, thank you for making such a milestone of a magazine one more release to being complete here.  You rock.

Midway Has Been Sold

Posted By:  triverse @ Jun 26 2009, 11:18 PM
Well, we all knew it was going to happen and it finally has, Midway has formerly been sold to Warner Bros.  Just how did WB get Mortal Kombat?  Read on, it is kind of sad, the circumstances and how far franchises like Mortal Kombat have fallen.

QUOTE
Looks like the new home of Mortal Kombat, Joust, Spy Hunter and other well-known Midway properties will be Warner Bros. after all. The media conglomerate looks to have won bidding rights to the publisher and developer by default.

According to the LA Times' report on the matter, Warner's $33 million bid for the better portion of the company's assets was the only serious offer. There were no other formal bids.

Yep, Warner Bros got Midway because there were NO OTHER SERIOUS OFFERS!  Isn't that just sad that the company that controls the Mortal Kombat franchise only had ONE serious suitor in this auction?  Really can it be called an auction knowing this now?

Retromags Is Proud To Present An Interview With Phillyman

Posted By:  triverse @ Jun 26 2009, 10:37 AM
Not many members here know but Retromags turned 4 yesterday and I am proud to present an interview with Phillyman, I mean, if you have been around here long, you know a day late is like lightening fast for him so I will take what I can get here.   smile.gif

The project has come a long way, we have welcomed an icon to the project in The Game Doctor, and have had to ask a few members to leave.  Many milestones have been passed with the acquisition of issues like Electronic Games #1 (thanks to the Father of Gaming Magazines for having the balls to team up with Arnie Katz and get Reese Communications to take that chance).  Many new members have joined up and have done amazing work on the site, the wiki and just being there supporting with forum posts, to name one would be a disservice to those not named, you all know who you are, on behalf of the rest of the Retromags Team, thank you.

Now, on to the meat and potatoes of this announcement, the interview with Phillyman.  He is the founder of Retromags (so if you really really hate it here, blame him).  While not exactly the final word on things (we whip him regularly) he is the head man here.  We show him respect (when members might be watching) and do respect him (sometimes, sometimes not) and wouldn't (couldn't?) trade him for anyone else.

When were you born?

About 15 minutes south of Philadelphia

What prompted you to start Retromags?

I used to belong to a certain forum that is no longer around, a few members on that forum started scanning video game manuals for preservation. I had always wanted to give back to the emulation scene, but due to lack of programming knowledge....I could not help. One night it hit me to scan all my Nintendo Power magazines into electronic format.

What is the official Birthday of Retromags?

June 25th 2005! (see, told you, don't worry, he is back on his memory medicine so maybe we can do this on time next year)

What is your favorite moment over the last 4 years of running Retromags?

I have a good many favorite moments, but to be honest my favorite moment is a compilation of moments. Retromags was a very slow project a few years ago, and due to Meppi, Thor, Triverse, MBJ, Kitsune, Kbf_private_joker, E-Day and countless others....we are now moving along at a great pace.

What is your favorite issue available here?

I have to go with the very first issue of Nintendo Power.

What is your most treasured gaming possesion?

I have a Sega Channel adapter, brings back memories of when I was younger.

If you could go back and change one thing, what would it be?

I wish that the people who were helping out back in 2005 were still somehow around these days.

What is the most scary thing to happen to you in the last 4 years with Retromags?

Nothing terribly scary has happened thus far, I do remember a rumor about Nintendo offering Nintendo Powers through the Wii channel....which would have made us have to stop offering them through Retromags.

Did you think Retromags would be where it is at now when you started it?

Not really, when you start a project like this....you never know how it will be recieved. But I think we still have room to grow. I would still love to see us get 20 people who could produce 1 scanned/edited magazine per month.

Where do you see Retromags going in the next say, 2 years and 6 years respectively?

I see us as being the #1 source for electronic preservation of retro gaming magazines. I also see us becoming the #1 source for information pertaining to those magazines. I hope that within 2 years we finish up the EGM and Nintendo Power sets. In 6 years I would hope that we would have GamePro, Next Generation, Electronic Games and Gamefan completely preserved.

If you could have one guarantee with Retromags, what would it be?

I would like the guarantee that we will still be here in 2019!

There you have it, if you have any questions for Phillyman, post them here.  Retromags wouldn't be here without the support of the members like you.
