Team Sega Newsletter Issue 5

ISSUE: 5Content

Scan updated August 24, 2019

Sega's house organ newsletter for all things Sega, mailed free to anybody who registered a Sega product or who had a friend sign him/her up for it. Sixteen pages, mailed bulk rate out of good ol' Texas.

Features:

  • Name the Sega Newsletter Contest (see next issue for how this turns out...)
  • A New Year...New Games...And Even More Fun (editor John Sauer salutes you in his editorial)
  • Sega Input (everything readers send in goes here now instead of all over the magazine, but we'll still break it down for you at Retromags because we love you)
  • Draw Your Favorite Sega Game Contest Winners, Part II (The 16-20 and 21-and-up categories revealed)
  • Sega Software Checklist (A reminder of all the games you didn't own yet)
  • Sega Merchandise Order Form (If you like it, then you better put a Sega on it)
  • Scoreboard (Showcasing the top 5 players of Thunder Blade (SMS). Next month: Double Dragon (SMS)!)

Tips From the Team (part of Sega Input; reader-submitted strategies):

  • Out Run (SMS)
  • Zillion (SMS)
  • Space Harrier (SMS)
  • Maze Hunter 3-D (SMS)
  • Alex Kidd in Miracle World (SMS)

Sega Secrets (part of Sega Input; editor-supplied gaming tips):

  • Double Dragon (SMS)
  • Power Strike (SMS)
  • Space Harrier 3-D (SMS)

Ask the Sega Master (part of Sega Input; responses to reader questions on specific games):

  • Great Baseball (SMS)
  • Wonder Boy in Monster Land (SMS)
  • Fantasy Zone II (SMS)
  • Black Belt (SMS)

Reviews:

  • R-Type (SMS)
  • Rambo III (SMS)
  • Golvellius (SMS)
  • Reggie Jackson Baseball (SMS)

Coming Soon:

  • Poseidon Wars 3-D (SMS)
  • Y's: The Vanished Omens (SMS)
  • Reggie Jackson Baseball (SMS)
  • Walter Payton Football (SMS)
  • California Games (SMS)
  • Altered Beast (SMS)

Notable Things:

  • Sega's name comes from a combination of the words SErvice GAmes.
  • John Sauer reminds readers not to say 'the N-word'. Really, John? REALLY? (Yes, yes, 'the N-word' in this case referred to 'Nintendo', but still...the other N-word? That was also known as 'the N-word'.)
  • Sega Games Preview II is available, but unfortunately we don't have video links for it here at Retromags. Yet. Any loyal readers out there who shelled out their $7.00 back in the day? We'd like to hear from you.
  • Only two slots instead of four to sign up friends for the newsletter. 😞
  • Power Strike (SMS) is still only available via ordering through the newsletter.
  • It takes WAY more than $5-worth of effort to claim the $5 Phantasy Star rebate. Just saying.
  • Features ads from Toys 'R Us, Activision third-party titles, Child World/Children's Palace, and TSR's boardgame "I Think You Think I Think".
