Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Game Secrets

About This File

This was the first book Zach Meston wrote for Prima without Rusel DeMaria's name associated with it. If the introduction is to be believed, DeMaria handed the project to Meston and told him to go forth and kick ass, which is what Meston did.

This is the first of two versions of this book published. This one contains the walkthrough for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, but also contains a supplementary section that reprints the entries on The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link which previously appeared in their NES Game Secrets series. For $9.99, you get full walkthroughs for three awesome games, making it a great value for the money. Unsurprisingly, this book was a massive seller for Prima, reprinted over twenty times.

The second version, which was released in 1997, altered the title slightly, redid the cover art, and dropped the Zelda and Zelda II portion of the book, replacing it instead with the walkthrough for Link's Awakening which used the same format as similar walkthroughs from their Nintendo Game Boy Secrets line, and again sold a ridiculous number of copies. Don't worry; I'll have that one up for you here shortly. ;)

Enjoy! ❤️

Many Thanks!

Unfortunately, the Game Boy Secrets books never had a book that was released with Link's Awakening included; the LoZ ALTTP book with the Link's Awakening guide is the only version that has that, I believe?

...unless there is a third Game Boy Secrets book I do not know about?  (very hopeful)

Also, quite nice to see a copy of this book that has not been worn by both love and time...  I looked at my copy and, well...  it WAS one of my very first guide's back in the 90s.  😉

No, you are correct, there was no Game Boy Secrets with Link's Awakening. I was hasty when typing my description, and have edited it to correct the mistake. :)

I felt bad de-binding a first printing of this book in order to scan it, but one must break some eggs in order to make decent scans. I think that's how the saying goes. :)

Side question. Was there any Link to the Past guide back in the day that mentioned the "Chris Houlihan" room?

None that I'm aware of, and I'm almost certain there wouldn't be. Nintendo's programmers used the room as an "error correction" area, a place to dump the player if there was an error while loading a location as a failsafe to avoid locking the cart and potentially corrupting the game data. The fact this error correction method had been used in some versions of the cart was known about in 1994, and people would occasionally ask about it or talk about finding it on Usenet or IRC chat rooms, but it wasn't until fifteen or so years later that a way of reliably getting into the room was found. Nobody at the time these books were being written would have found it except by accident, even if they had been told about it by someone working at Nintendo. :)
