I have a number of issues of The Duelist, Inquest, Inquest Gamer, Shadis, and other assorted magazines of this sort. I'll get some gallery sections added later tonight for them so we can at least get the covers archived on here. :)

Edit: Gallery sections created for Duelist, Inquest, Inquest Gamer, Shadis, Pyramid, Hero, Wizard, and Wizard Special Issues under US Magazines, and Arcanum under UK Mags. If you have other mags you'd like galleries for, let the Warrior Nun know! :)

Hi Ho.  Hi Ho.  It's off to work at my job of being a professional stick-in-the-mud I go.

OK.  Now, you know that I like to upload covers:).  But while I'm OK with mags about computers (which often feature small sections on games and at the very least are about hardware that can be used to play games), I'm uncomfortable with opening wide our net to include mags of all sorts whether they're related to video games or not.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily opposed to the idea of opening RM up to magazines of other kinds, but if that's where we're heading we should amend the frontpage masthead that says

This site is set up to digitally preserve video game magazines from 10 years ago and earlier for defunct magazines, and 15 years ago and earlier for current magazines.

I don't play card games so I'm unfamiliar with most of those mags, so I don't know if they maybe have a monthly section that also covers video games. But I definitely know comics, so I know that Wizard rarely covered games (unless maybe they were comic-book related).  If mags about trading card games are OK, then how about mags about tabletop RPGs?  Then how about tabletop board games?  How about casino games?  How about Las Vegas travel magazines?  etc.etc.  I feel that this is a slippery slope and should be treated as all-or-nothing (either stick to video game-related or embrace everything under the sun).

OPINIONS, PEOPLE!  LET'S HEAR 'EM!

As for uploading things from elsewhere, even with someone's permission...it's something I'm generally opposed to.  As I said above, I'm not really sure Inquest belongs here at all, but let's put that aside and assume that we're actually talking about video game mags you found somewhere and are wanting to upload after getting the scanner's permission.  My first question would be: if you didn't scan them yourself, then where did you get them from?  Because if you downloaded them from somewhere, then that's where everyone else can download them from as well.  If the scanner also wants them here, they can always become a member and submit them for approval.  But what you see at Retromags was created by Retromags members, not found somewhere else and uploaded here.  There are other sites like archive.org that anyone can upload anything to with or without permission (people sometimes take our stuff and upload it there without asking).  I feel that would be a better place for you to upload these scans if you aren't the actual scanner/editor.  So long as they're available somewhere, everyone wins, so we certainly have nothing against archive.org and encourage people to use it as a resource.  But a Retromags scan should be just that - a scan made by a member of Retromags, in my opinion, at least.

These are all valid points which most regular staff would agree with for the most part.  Retromags should remain pretty tight about the person scanning magazines.  I'm not acusing anyone of malice intent but when person A tells me that person B scanned a magazine and I have permission, I become suspicious.  Long story short, I would like to see some type of evidence that permission is granted to use the scans of a magazine on Retromags preservation site.

I looked up Shadis Dualist and Inquest Gamer on Wikipedia and the traits they all share are following card games in the early to mid nighties then expanding to include board games and some types of Role Playing Games.  They are certainly not what you usually find on Retromags but it still has a certain type of nerdyness which is not so out of place.

I say put the covers up once permission is granted, see what we have as far as how many magazines are scanned and then have a vote.  Honestly, all this talk has made me curious about it.

Now, if somebody approached me with some type of computer hardware magazines, I would be completely in favour of preserving them here.  Videogames and computers in my opinion go together like toast and jam.

Since no one at Retromags has scanned or plans to scan any of these mags (at least, not currently), the best thing the OP can do is upload what they have at archive.org and post about it here.  That's the best place for them anyway, and once they're available and people can give them a look-see, who knows?  One of our members might become interested enough to scan some issues for our site, as well.:)
