Does anyone have these magazines?

Hi members,

I came across a few magazine auctions that I think would be interesting to get scanned and added to the site (It's on my to do list to contribute this year). I may purchase one or more of these just so I know that someone in our group has them.

I know we have a tag for "acquired" to indicate that at least one member has the magazine, but I am not sure how up to date those status tags are.

The list:

Club Capcom Magazine 1993 Spring

Gamest No.57 arcade magazine

Gamest No.20

Colorful Pure Girl July 2002

I don't own any of those, but MAN, those prices.😅

I can get Surugaya stuff shipped to me for free if I spend over 1500 yen (around $13.50)

Of the issues you listed:

They've got Gamest 56 in stock for 750 yen ($6.75).

The Colorful Pure Girl you listed is 150 yen ($1.35).

Those are the only two of the issues you listed they have in stock, but there are tons more issues of those titles available.  They have almost every issue of Colorful Puregirl for under a couple of bucks each, and most of their Gamest issues are cheaper than the one above (from $2-5 each).  They only have one issue of Club Capcom (spring 94) for 1170 yen ($10.50).

God damn eBay pisses me off.  Judging by their prices, you'd think these things were printed on gold leaf or something.

Just wanted to add that the "acquired" tags can mostly be ignored.  A whole bunch of them were marked by people who no longer visit the site, let alone scan for it.  And other people who are still around (like myself) don't actually mark anything they own as acquired.

It was an interesting idea, but as soon as people who used the tag started to drop out of the hobby, it sort of made the entire thing an untrustworthy mess.  Asking about specific issues like you did here is probably best.

Also, I just noticed that most of those auctions are being sold by someone in Japan.  That's pretty low-down, buying that stuff on the cheap and then raping Americans on the prices (though I'm sure the seller is probably an expat themselves).   Of course, I suppose even American mags are usually WAY overpriced on eBay.  You know what, just $%^$ eBay! 😝

Game mags are generally cheaper here than they are in the US.  To put it in perspective: that guy is auctioning that Club Capcom for $56 shipped.  I see a couple of (fairly common) copies of Nintendo Power #1 being auctioned for $50.  Meanwhile, in Japan...right now, I could buy - -not bid on -- BUY an original copy of Famitsu #1 in excellent condition for around $75 shipped.  Which do you think is the better deal?😋

If I was an asshole, I could make SO MUCH MONEY buying magazines and selling them on eBay at ridiculous markups whenever I visit home.🤑

Arg, that makes me sad. Definitely creates some hurdles to our overall mission.

I haven't heard of Surugaya before. Interesting that they will buy on your behalf and ship to you.

I don't know about that.  Are you talking about a proxy service for buying from overseas?

Anyway, I've ordered stuff from them before.  Crazy how they'll ship a heavy box full of magazines for free.  Mandarake is another place that sells cheap mags, but they're mostly comics and adult stuff - no video game mags.  And of course Yahoo Auctions can be really cheap, especially if you hit upon a large lot.

To be honest, if I were you, I'd try to start out scanning something a little more affordable.  Most of the mags I scan were bought for about $1 each.  The most I've ever paid for any of the hundreds of Japanese mags sitting in my closet is around $5 each for some old Comptiq and Login mags.  If I ever paid $20-50 for a single issue, there's no way I'd be willing to destroy it in order to scan it.

So if you can find a way to get Japanese mags cheaply sent to you (which seems unlikely, since international shipping is usually crazy high) - that's great.  But if not, start with something you have easier access to.  Especially if its your first time scanning, it's probably best to start with something you have no real emotional attachment to.  Once you've finished that one, you'll have a better idea of whether or not you've got the stones to cut apart a mag you care about.😋
