nope, not owning any famitsu issue

Currently I'm hammered with work and have zero free time, I'm drip feeding what I already scanned but will run out of stuff to upload in a couple of weeks

I might also start scanning some JP mags to help out. Have you done any research into which mags might hold more notable bits, like interviews, beta build screenshots, etc.? There are thousands of issues so I'd like to get the most bang for my buck (I'm not in Japan so I can't just walk down to Jimbocho and browse).

When I set out to create our Japanese magazine section, I just bought a bunch of large dirt-cheap lots of mags from Yahoo auctions and started scanning.  I don't really care what games they cover (psst...I don't have much interest in console games...🤫)  I've scanned about 70 issues thus far and haven't heard any complaints about the contents, though.  With JP mags, 95% of the people who download them here can't read Japanese anyway and just want to look at the pictures.

This guy has bought 42 copies of Hippon Super a late 80's ot mid 90's Japanese Gaming magazine. He has made some videos translating some of the developer interviews in the magazine.

I enjoy using them as a form of practice. It's always enjoyable to learn new vocabulary, then flip through a magazine and go, "Oh look, that's the kanji for 'girlfriend'!"

But, yeah, I'm much better at enjoying the pictures than I am reading the articles. 😞

Can you please link the tweet this is from?

Magical Pop'n was released 10 March 1995 so I guess it was an issue around then.

The tweet has been deleted, but it is archived. The guy who posted it has a huge collection, and periodically posts scans from famitsu he finds interesting.

Cool! Thanks. So the tweet confirms 1995 as part of an ad for the game.

In my bookmarks I have this cross-referenced index of Famitsu contents: http://bring.under.jp/ftindex/

Magical Popn has Japanese title of マジカルポップン

Two references in 1995 are:

  • platform_game 【issue】page
  • SF_マジカルポップン 【1/6・13】173
  • SF_マジカルポップン 【3/17】38,45

The first is issue 316/317 from January, https://www.retromags.com/gallery/image/23560-famitsu-03160317-january-613-1995/

The second is issue 326 from March, https://www.retromags.com/gallery/image/23564-famitsu-0326-march-17-1995/
Given that there were two pages in the tweet I think this is the issue you're looking for.

I'm not aware of those two issues having been scanned and/or shared. But good luck tracking them down!

That depends.  The first page in the tweet is an ad.  So if the indexed pages include advertisements, then yes, perhaps.  If they only include content pages, then no.

Also, where did you get this? 🔰?  Is that in our emoji list?  I LOLed - it's the sticker that beginner drivers in Japan have to put on the back of their cars.

I typed it in using the Emoji picker and the forum converted it to an image. I first saw that symbol pre-web in Gran Turismo's driving lesson, when you narrowly missed the target time. It taunted me for years before I found out what it really meant.

The index does list advertisements (they classified every page content type until 23 Oct 1992, but not the issues after that)

Also, the two images do appear to be one each of left/right page so that would tally up with one each of odd/even page numbers?

When I first moved to Japan there was a corresponding sticker where the colors were yellow and orange for elderly drivers.  At the time, I lived in the country, so those elderly stickers were EVERYWHERE.

But then I guess people were bothered that while the beginner sticker's colors represented spring/summer, the colors of the elderly sticker were representative of autumn as things are dying, so they redesigned the elderly sticker to include light green, green, yellow and orange to represent all the seasons.  Luckily I didn't have to use the beginner sticker since I'd been driving for years before coming here, and I'm not old enough for the other, thank god.😅

Thank you! That is quite the resource. Famitsu's database lists the game as having been reviewed in issue 326, meaning the preview/ad is from 316/317.

Related, but there's another free floating Famitsu preview I want to find the issue for. This is for the oddly titled Linkle Liver Story.

Unrelated, but there is a similar site which catalogue's all of Gamest's content. These sites should be archived and translated.

Thanks for the GAMEST link! Great stuff.

Please do let us know when you get to the end of this journey! I'm intrigued.
