Super Mario Bros. 3 preview articles put me into a special place of Zen.

Hi there!  I'm the only person on Earth who enjoys SMB2 more than 3.  Nice to meet you!

Actually, as a kid I never owned 2, so my time playing it back then was limited to a couple of times at a friend's house.  Back then I would have chosen the first game as my favorite, since it was my first experience with "modern" post-Atari console gaming.  But if I have to play one of the NES Marios now, it's 2 all the way.  I don't know why.

I am glad that for the USA version of Super Mario Bros. 2 they re-skinned the Doki Doki Panic game. It brought in new elements to the game like the pick up and throw mechanic.

I wonder what Super Mario Bros. 3 would have been like if they didn't get feedback from the reskinned Super Mario Bros. 2 USA version.

I'm not sure things would have been all that different.  Based on interviews with the producers, the conceptual development work that went into the game that would eventually become Doki Doki Panic was originally intended for the next Mario game.  So if Nintendo hadn't made a deal with Fuji TV, Mario 3 might have played very similarly to SMB2/DDP.  Granted, it wouldn't have been identical, but it seems that the vertical scrolling and stacking/throwing of things would have remained.  I guess the real difference is that SMB3 would have been SMB4 in Japan.😀
