I just saw this posted in another fourm....

"The Japanese version of Mario 2 is basically a continuation of super mario bros. 1 but much much harder. It was originally a famicom disk system game and was deemed too "hard" for american kids. So Nintendo bought the rights to another famicom disk system game called Doki Doki Panic and changed it into a Mario game. Thus Super Mario Bros 2 (or Super Mario USA in japan) as most Americans was born. If you search around a bit you can find more information on it."

If you have Super Mario All-Stars on SNES play The Lost Levels. I'm pretty sure it's mario 2 JAP.
