Phalanx was a grossly-overlooked shoot-'em up (probably due to that cover artwork). It had all kinds of cool stuff going for it, though. Watch the video for some first-stage gameplay, and check out all the stuff it had to offer. Notice especially the ability to store and use different configurations depending on your needs at the time, that killer parallax scrolling, and the fact that stuff in the background often attacked you just to increase the difficulty since there was no way you could fight back against it.
