Original Star Wars Trilogy Dvds To Be Of Inferior Quality

So you may rember my original post in which I was overjoyed about the announcement of the official DVD release of the original unaltered Star Wars trilogy on DVD this September 12th. Well, there has been an unsettling new development. It has been officially confirmed with Lucasfilm and Fox that the video transfers on the forthcoming discs will be the non-anamorphic transfers from the 1993 laserdisc set. You can read all the gory details HERE at The Digital Bits.

So this is very frustrating. What this basically means is that Lucas is giving fans an extended middle finger in regard to the true original trilogy. Non hi-def non-anamorphic transfers that are 13 years old are going to look terrible on DVD compared to the altered and butchered 2004 release of the trilogy. Maybe I'll stick with my bootlegs after all rather than let Lucas get his filthy hands on any more of my money.

i'm still happy to see the originals released- but that SUCKS..

I think I'll stick to my laserdisc transfers too, if these arent better quality- one day I"ll miss it when i get a good TV and such.

I'm almost willing to bet that in a few years (maybe once a HD-DVD standard is made) they'll be released again... you can't swear to never release something again when new technologies pop up every five minutes.

It's like 10% of dvds released are even worth the money to buy them... but im not gonna rant about syndicated TV shows, censored episodes, etc, here and now... I'll save it for a more relevant post;)

What's the difference between the laserdisc and the originals? I'm not familiar with non-anamorphic and all that, but am still curious to know why someone would get so upset over something like that.

First of all, a new restoration would be nice since film restoration technology has come a long way in the past 13 years. The laserdisc contains the original versions but it's an older non-HD analog transfer.

Regarding anamorphic widescreen, when you see "enhanced for 16x9 TVs" on a DVD it means it's anamorphic. What this means is that the image will look great on a standard TV but when played on a widescreen TV will benefit from extra resolution. Conversely, when you want to play a non-anamorphic DVD on a widescreen TV, you have to zoom in and it doesn't look too great. For more detail, consult the Digital Bits guide on the subject HERE.

Anamorphic and better picture usually go hand in hand because the studios have to go through the effort to make a new digital transfer for the DVD rather than just using old source materials from the laserdisc era.

As to why I'd get so upset over this, it's because I'm a geek. :)
