IGN Rips Sony A New HDMI Port

Yes, Sony screwed the pooch on that one. I think that the bigger issue, however, is that disc makers and company have gone too far with next gen DVD copy protection. Sony's decision wouldn't be an issue if not for all this secure digital connection hogwash. Technically speaking, you can get a perfectly good with component out. The paranoid studios however, have decided that they would rather screw consumers than risk having their content pirated, which is an inevitable reality in the long run.

You'll begin to appreciate the cost factor with Component and Audio cables being separate too...the market is saturated with good high quality cables all fighting for your pocket money, and buying good quality ones will make your system shine (as long as you have a decent TV to go along with it). I have Monster Cable's Ultra series Componenets (got it for a fraction of retail cost) on my 36" Sony Grand Wega CRT, and console games never looked more rich, vibrant, and sharp.

I saw a comparison test with the best Monster Cables: Component vs. HDMI. On a hi-def TV the differences were so subtle (i mean the techie had to point out the differences it was that small) that 99% of users won't see the difference. HDMI gives accurate colour output, but of course that ends up being dependent on how the TV is setup, and everybody has different preferences on how they like to set their TV anyway.

HDMI can only boast that it adds the copy protection that analog cables can't. Makes Sony happy (for now).
