Xbox Live used 600 TERABYTES of bandwidth during E3!

600TB? I think I transferred that much last month on usenet.... ;)

Seriously though, 600TB is a lot of bandwidth for such a short period of time, of course a strong akamai-based web farm could handle that. What's more interesting is Microsoft's lack of vision to see that 2+ million broadband Xbox'es could be programmed with something like a "torrent enabled" Live to spread the files amongst the users who might already have the downloads, rather than shell out big bucks to feed the masses from their own hands (and corporate pocketbook).

Congrats Micro$oft for having the total lack of initiative to figure out how to cut costs and relying on the masses to pay $60-80 a game at release time by passing the expense onto the consumer.

Companies are reluctant to use BitTorrent, in part because of its popularity with warez, and also because many people have transfer caps and limited upload bandwidth. World of Warcraft uses an adaptation of BitTorrent but they do have their own seeding servers that handle a significant portion of the bandwidth. Maybe one day Akamai will launch a BitTorrent distribution service to make this feasible on a large scale, but until then these big publishers are best served with static HTTP caches.
