Nintendo's Miyamoto Doesn't Plan to Ever Retire

I don't care if he is 90 years old, as long as he is cranking out hits....let him continue!

Nintendo's legendary Shigeru Miyamoto has directly affected an entire generation of gamers. For the millions of players who grew up playing NES or SNES, the world was forever changed. The man behind it all has continued to have a huge impact on the industry with the Wii, Wii Sports and Wii Fit, but it doesn't appear like Miyamoto is prepared to hang up his hat anytime soon, despite the fact that he'll be turning 58 in November.
Speaking in a lengthy interview with GamesTM, Miyamoto was asked about retirement. He answered, "Well, I am one of the company workers and the company has to retire me some time. So from that perspective, yes I may have to retire from Nintendo some day. But when I look around and see how aged cartoonists continue to work on their manga and how movie directors create new movies all the time, I understand that they would never retire. And by the same token, I guess I will still be making games somehow. The only question is whether the younger people will be willing to work with me at that far point in the future."

It'll be a sad day for many when Miyamoto actually does retire, and much sadder still when the man passes away. Some have called Sid Meier the "father of PC gaming," and it could be argued that Miyamoto is the "father of console gaming."

Shigeru Miyamoto has influenced more than one generation of gamers, and I would argue that number to be at least three now. Besides my generation that grew up under the NES flagship, my generation now has children that are impacted by Mario and company as well. I would even add as the third generation some of our Baby Boomer parents who picked up the consoles either for themselves or played along with their kids or even found themselves enjoying the "kid's" games on their own.

Yeah, Nintendo may force him into retirement some day per corporate and maybe public policy. However, he will still most likely be able to find plenty of work as an independent contractor given his impressive resume. Nintendo may probably even sign him to an exclusive contract, but could you imagine him designing for Sony or even Microsoft or someone else that may jump into the fray in the next decade or so?
