Electronic Gaming Monthly... Is it DEAD?

I just got in the new EGM 2016 Buyer's Guide with the Assassin's Creed Syndicate cover as seen below in the picture. They sent it in a paper manila envelope. So, it came all scuffed up and bent on the corners. What happened to the plastic bags that it usually comes in? Are they getting that cheap? Anyways here is the picture:

As for the EGM Lost Issue (February 2009), it came out a while back as a demo for the new EGMi magazines that EGM was trying to do. I remember reading through it when EGMi first launched. There wasn't a way to archive the issue, since the whole thing was in flash media with pictures, sound, and even videos. I did notice that EGM took it down from their EGMi web site (www.egmmag.com). The only way we can get a copy of that if you contact EGM to see if they will put it back up. But really, they need to make an archival version (such as PDF) so we can download it properly. If you contact EGM, make sure you mention the archive thing. I will continue to look for it if anybody tried to download it in some form.

UPDATE: I figured out to get the EGM Lost Issue to show up on the web site! You have to be logged in as a Premium User. When you get into the www.egmmag.com site, first log in with your username and password as a registered user. Then, click on iPass. If you have the earlier issues of EGM (Issue 238, for example), you can grab an iPass code out of it. Now, here's the catcher. Once you put in the iPass code, it will boot you into a page on www.egmnow.com/premium that says, "nothing found." Just ignore and close the page. Go back to the original EGMi site. You will now be able to click on the "Premium EGMi" tab from one of the links on the top. That will open up a bunch of issues with the Lost Issue included (Part 1 & 2). Part 1 was just the trailer for the upcoming EGMi.

If you are unable to get this to work, I can put together some screenshots and make a pdf file for you guys.

Awesome,

Thanks for looking into this and finding a solution. Great job!

The problem I am having is that my codes, for whatever reason, say they have been used. I didn't know they expire (?) since I have kept renewing my subscription.

I checked some older issues of EGM, but they don't have the codes. It says something about already being a subscriber. I can check through some other issues, but they are currently packed away in storage.

So, is the EGM version of 237 the complete magazine, or is it split into sections like some of the other EGM issues; I.E. 237.1, 237.2, 237.3, etc..?

Guess I should have read your post more closely instead of jumping around and trying to get the code working. :P So split into 2. Not bad.

If it's not too much trouble for you to make a pdf that would be great. Otherwise I will continue to try and get this to work on my end. Thanks.

I actually just received the Halo 5 cover of the same mag. Has anyone else seen any other alternative covers for the 2016 Buyer's Guide (AKA #267)?

There are four covers: Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Halo 5, Assassin's Creed Syndicate, and Fallout 4.

I can no longer find it anywhere. I really wish they had just printed a small amount of these for collectors or at least made a proper PDF file for it.

Somewhere I actually do have one, but it's not the American edition...I think it was EGM Brasil? Kind of a neat curiosity to have. I think it's a printer proof, but I do believe it was released.

Very cool. It would be nice if you could scan it some day..

That would make an interesting project. To take the layout of that and add in the translated text from the EGMi release of #257.

I have someone within EGM looking into trying to find the hard copy printing of it, but I'm not sure the likelihood of that.

I'm betting that somewhere there are some Quark Express files of this sitting on an old hdd.

Obviously, the standard "news" "previews" "reviews" thing isn't ideal for a quarterly publication, but I could see myself picking it up if they had big, well-researched features written over the three month gap between issues. Maybe they'll switch to longform journalism, retrospectives, interviews, that sort of thing.

When they first relaunched, they really seemed to be going in that direction. With all of the "History of Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Hyrule Historia" coffee table books getting released, it's pretty obvious there are a lot of interesting stories to be told outside the up-to-the-minute stream of consciousness stuff. But I think trying to maintain egmnow.com and have it somehow dovetail with the print magazine has caused them to lose focus.

Did anybody receive the Winter or Spring issue? The Spring issue was supposed to go out in April. I haven't received anything since the Fall issue last September.

No, the last issue they sent out was the "Special Issue 05" AKA #267.

The next issue is being worked on now and is said to be shipping late this month or early June 2016.

It's sad that the relaunched EGM has gone quarterly (and in all honesty, has been a shell of it's former glory for years). But at least it's still around in some form unlike so many of the other gaming mags of my youth.

Yes, it will get updated at some point :)
