Film Magazines

Hello,

I really like pop-culture and I found out that magazines and newspapers really captured the "spirit" of their eras. I wonder if there is a website like yours but for film/tv magazines ? I really would like to go back and see what were people excited about in '98 and which TV shows they were hyped about in '94.

thanks

I managed to "acquire" 130 digital issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland which is a fun way of looking at the old horror/sci-fi movies from the earliest days through to the mid 1990's. Same for Fangoria and horror movies when I found 280 odd issues of that title.

The problem with TV is it never goes out of date thanks to re-run after re-runs of old programs so it's a bit problematic offering digital versions of magazines compared to gaming magazines. Finding content is more difficult as a result. Some people have uploaded magazines like Omni to Archive.org but the quality is generally atrocious. Even those I obtained aren't great compared to our own scans for this site and OGM but hey, you take what you can get right?

I really don't see why a magazine should be uptight about uploading scans of their issues from 20 years ago. Lets be honest, how many people out there are going to pay to read that? No body is excited about the upcoming "Titanic" movie or whats going to happen on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" finale.

Unless they are going to have a subscription based service where you can go online and read all their issues (which I hardly know any magazines that do that), there is no reason to make a big deal out of it. Printed magazine is a dying business, at this point its more about giving back to the community than fighting over copyrights.

While I agree with you I am sure the publishers take a different view and therein lies the problem with sites like this one which are without question infringing on copyright in the interests of preserving content.

Unfortunately, the law is clear in that regard and sites like ours rely on the publishers applying a modicum of common sense when it comes to older content by either giving permission (not a common occurrence) or understanding that by not stopping us it might generate interest in their current titles to the point where they have increased sales. Movie magazines like Fangoria cater to a niche market and I think you will find they will not allow any copying at all. Game Informer and the GameFan magazines are not allowed here as a result of the owners contacting Phillyman and requesting their removal. When you are in this business you have to pick your battles as the publishers tend to have bigger pockets than we do......

I am surprised those magazines are still in business. It really has been years since I heard some one bought a magazine. No one will pick them up even if you give them away for free. Maybe they are school kids of still get excited over a printed issue... I am not sure, but it no longer makes sense to wait a month and pay to get info on something you can see it broadcasted live the same second for free.
