  1. Features: Welcome to GamePro! (Editor Don Ferrell introduces this now-legendary icon of gaming history to legions of slavering fans...or at least those few weirdos who picked up this premiere issue). The Cutting Edge (Nintendo's Power Glove and Broderbund's U-Force controllers launch gaming into the 21st century. Riiiiight...) Personality ProFile (Alan Fetzer, president of Taito Software) Hot at the Arcades (Technos' Double Dragon II: The Revenge, Midway's N.A.R.C. and Sega's Power Drift will suck all the quarters out of your pocket) ProNews Report (Headlines from the January Consumer Electronics Show) ProArtist Series (Art-themed contest. This month's contest subject: "The Villains.") ProChallenge Board (Think you can do better than these high scores, punk? Then prove it!) ProViews: Operation: Wolf (NES) Adventures of Lolo (NES) Bubble Bobble (NES) Adventure Island (NES) Shinobi (SMS) R-Type (SMS) Desert Falcon (7800) Mario Bros. Cover price is $3.50, or $21 a year, so you actually save ~9.53% off the cover price by subscribing, not 10% as advertised. (Yes, we're geeks. So sue us.) If you convince a friend to sign up, you get a free poster (worth $4.95), but your friend gets zilch. So maybe you should convince your enemies to sign up instead, and give the extra posters to your friends? "The secret to keeping the home market alive is clearly with quality products and a diverse selection," says Alan Fetzer in his interview. Which is why you won't catch companies like EA putting out new Madden and Call of Duty games every year. The very first ProTip? "Never attack a group of enemies when there's a hostage among them...you might injure yourself!" Operation: Wolf summarized in sixteen words, y'all. Before it became S.W.A.T., GamePro's cheat section was known as 'Secret Weapons'. The screenshot for Wizards & Warriors II in the Short ProShots section is from the original Wizards & Warriors. What, you didn't think we'd notice? The passwords given in Secret Weapons for Metroid and The Goonies II are incorrect and therefore don't work. Whoops!

Well, all the reader response comes from the original EGM '89 Buyer's Guide, which is kind of like their Issue 0. One lucky winner in EGM's Great Game Giveaway contest takes home more than 50 NES games. Tecmo Bowl blows John Elway's Quarterback off the field, as it should. The TAXAN Videodiction newsletter is formatted to look like an article from the magazine, though it's completely a production of TAXAN's in-house ad team. Sneaky, sneaky, guys... This early in the game, EGM's juggling both console and home computer software. They'll cut the home software aspect to go console-only before too long. A subscription to EGM runs $19.95 for 12 issues, according to this issue's subscription ad. The Konix Slipstream (later renamed the Konix Multisystem) was cancelled after the company ran out of money. EGM editor Donn Nauert sure gets around...he has high scores submitted to the APA across multiple platforms from multiple cities in Texas and California.

Jeff Westermann of Sacramento, CA wrote in to complain about the lack of Atari 2600 coverage despite there being more 2600 units out there than anything else. This is the 2019 equivalent of someone complaining to Game Informer that they waste too much time on PlayStation 4 stuff when the PlayStation 2 was the best-selling home console of all time. At some point, Jeff, you gotta move on. Happ Control's Professional Control Pad looks like a straight rip-off of Sega's original 3-button Genesis controller, right down to the design of the D-Pad, its black colour scheme, angled button arrangement, and arched design. Sunsoft's design for their Fester's Quest ad gets recycled for other games as well, with only the image on the TV screen and the ad copy changed. It's still the same kid clutching his NES controller, staring into the television. Speaking of rip-offs, TAXAN pillaged their alien artwork from the xenomorphs of "Alien" and "Aliens". It wasn't enough for "The Adventures of GamePro" to rip off The Last Starfighter last issue; now they have to rip off TRON as well. "Wild Boys" was an unreleased game by Bandai. Back in 2015, a test copy of it was found on eBay...having already been gutted to serve as a test cart for Kickle Cubicle. The ProViews of Alex Kidd in High Tech World and Reggie Jackson Baseball are in the Nintendo section for some reason. GamePro just cannot make up their minds about subscription prices: now we're up to $19.97 for twelve issues. What happened to people who paid $13.97 for their subscriptions just two months back? International subscribers need to tack an extra $10 on to that price now, instead of the $5 bump charged two months ago. Greg Fischbach of Acclaim (a company noted for publishing a crap-ton of awful licensed games) has this to say about the company's approach to licensed software: "If the consumer thinks that you've deceived him by using [a] popular license such as Rambo or Wrestlemania, and then haven't been able to follow through with a product that's on it--you only get one chance to do that. [...] Licenses can't just be used willy-nilly." And yet... GamePro mixed up "Taito Software, Inc." with "Taito of America" last issue. Oops!

Winners of the Excellent Nintendo Sweepstakes take home a full compliment of Activision-published NES carts: The Three Stooges, Stealth ATF., Predator, Ghostbusters, and Super Pitfall. Apparently losing this contest was the only way to win it. The incorrect passwords for The Goonies II and Metroid which were printed last issue are corrected in this one. The editor promises more Sega "coveage" in a response to letters requesting it. Proofreaders? We don't need no stinkin' proofreaders... Last issue, a subscription to GamePro cost $19 per year, a savings of roughly 10% off the $3.50 cover price. If you bought in at that price, you're a sucker because in this issue, a subscription only costs $13.97 per year, while the cover price has gone up to $3.95. Looks like that sweet ad revenue is flowing in! "The Adventures of GamePro"'s conceit basically rips off 1984's The Last Starfighter, right down to the video game mastering protagonist being named 'Alex' in both. Who's bright idea was it to run the screenshot of the Metroid password in S.W.A.T. right across the gutter fold?

Notable Stuff: 116 down to 100...quite a page cut from last issue, isn't it? This issue shipped with a free Gex lid sticker bound between pages 82 and 83. The 'Checkpoint' and 'Q&A' columns make their debut this issue. The table of contents screws up their Gex lid sticker entry twice: first they refer to it as a "GEx Lid Sticker", and then mark it as being page 98b. It should be page 82b, as 98b would put it between the last page and the inside back cover. "Chibi's Terms", as always, is massively useful for any retro gamer and/or Japanophile. Seriously, at this point, who in the hell is interested in cheat codes for Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi?! Explain yourselves! Lots of readers cite Final Fantasy VII on both sides of the "Can a Game Be 'Too Long'?" argument. Hmm... Lara Croft's boobs grow another three sizes in Dwayne Lukasik's Tomb Raider II fan art.

  17. Features: Power Up: Letter From the Editor (Chris Bieniek announces some big changes, including subscriptions, more strategy guides, and even more tips and cheats squeezed between the covers than ever before. Ahhhh...it's a great time to be a gamer!) Readers' Tips (Letters from fans) Mortal Kombat II: Seven Pages of Killer Kodes! (New tricks, cheats and goodies for the Super NES and Genesis versions, including the infamous Fergality...bwa ha ha!) Tip Collection (Cheats, hints and tips for a huge swath of Genesis, SNES, Game Gear, Game Boy, 3DO, Arcade and CD-i games) Strategies: Panic! (Sega CD) written by Zach Meston Battletech (GEN) written by Zach Meston C2: Judgement Clay (SNES/GEN) moves list and secret characters Alien vs. Predator (JAG) written by Zach Meston Way of the Warrior (3DO) written by Zach Meston Notable Stuff: Tips & Tricks goes from being a quarterly publication to a subscription-ready standard magazine starting with this issue. Know what sells magazines in the mid-90's? Fighting games. Mortal Kombat II gets its third cover feature with this issue. T&T has teamed up with Video Games magazine to offer some guides for great games. Many of these are written by Zach Meston, one of the premiere gaming strategists and guide-mongers of the decade. The Readers' Tips section includes a huge list of hidden games within games. If you want more bang for your buck, try tracking some of these guys down. Is it censorship? T&T runs a black bar over the boob joke sprite in Panic! (SCD) when it's enlarged for the title page, but leaves the actual game screen showing it on the bottom of page 26 un-retouched. The Alien vs. Predator guide is top-notch, explaining game mechanics, offering little hints for survival, providing a suggested order of attack for the Marine scenario, disclosing the location of all the weapons, and printing basic maps for every level, sub-level and airduct in the game. No matter which faction you favour, this guide is insanely useful. That Way of the Warrior guide did more to make that game attractive than anything else we've ever seen. While the game itself is nothing special, and certainly no Mortal Kombat killer, it's very enticing with its behind-the-scenes look at development, the stories behind the actors portraying all the characters, and other goodies. Pity the game's not as good as T&T makes it look.

  23. Features: The Faces Behind the Phone Lines - If you got stumped on a game back in the day, you couldn't hit up GameFAQs or YouTube. Instead, you picked up the phone and dialed a Game Counselor. EGM explores the ins and outs of video game help lines, and the dedicated men and women who got paid to walk you through those tough zones. EGM's Best and Worst of 1989 - Best graphics? Most challenging? Most enjoyable? Greatest replay value? Best sound design? Coolest Hero? Best Boss? Worst Film? Best Controller? Worst Movie-to-Game Conversion? The editors run down their lists from hot to not in every category imaginable. EGM's 16-Bit Systems Preview - Sega's Genesis, NEC's TurboGrafx-16, and Konix's Multistystem go head-to-head in a battle for 16-bit dominance. The Next Generation of Hand-Held Gaming - It might have been pushed into 1990, but Atari's Lynx with its full-colour display and built-in hardware zoom and scrolling functions is going to come out swinging for the fences. Departments: Insert Coin: Games, Games, Games!!! - Steve Harris welcomes you to the second edition of their Buyer's Guide, and introduces the Review Crew, including two new faces, so you can get an idea of where their tastes lie. Nintendo Player Sequels Boost NES to New Heights - Games like Castlevania 3, Ninja Gaiden 2, Double Dragon 2, and Super C are poised to push sales into the stratosphere. P.O.W.: Prisoner of War (8/7/7/7) Demon Sword (5/6/7/6) Twin Cobra (7/6/6/7) Bad Dudes (6/5/5/4) Sega Masters Master System Future in Doubt - Now that Genesis is here, can upcoming releases like Tennis Ace, Nightmare Basketball, and Ultima 4 keep 8-bit Sega fans satisfied? Captain Silver (4/4/6/4) Cloud Master (4/4/4/4) Spellcaster (7/6/6/5) Turbo Champ Turbo to Increase Library of Titles - NEC's Japanese counterpart to the TurboGrafx-16, the PC Engine, has robust third-party support, so while its initial game lineup on US soil was a bit weak, expect titles like Moto-Roader, Fantasy Zone, Power Golf, and Deep Blue to make up for the slack in the coming year, along with translations of arcade hits like Galaga '90, Dragon Spirit, R-Type, and Side Arms. Then, as if that's not enough, the CD add-on will sparkle with titles like Fighting Street, Monster Lair, and Darius. Blazing Lasers (7/6/9/9) China Warrior (4/4/5/5) The Legendary Axe (9/8/8/8) Victory Run (6/8/7/8) Outpost: Genesis Arcade-Inspired Titles Fuel Genesis - With over 500,000 units sold and two dozen new titles on the horizon, Sega has taken a commanding lead in the 16-bit wars. Titles like Super Shinobi, Super Monaco GP, Phantasy Star 2, Super Hang-On, Gain Ground, Golden Axe, and Forgotten Worlds are poised to keep Sega dominant well into the next year. Ghouls 'N' Ghosts (9/9/9/9) Last Battle (6/7/6/5) Thunder Force II (8/8/7/8) Super Thunder Blade (5/6/5/8) Tommy Lasorda Baseball (8/8/7/7) GameBoy Club Puzzlers and Arcades on GameBoy - Atari's delayed release of their Lynx handheld leaves Nintendo the undisputed king of the portable gaming hill for the moment. And the Big N will use every tool in their arsenal to see it stays that way, with games like Hyper Lode Runner, Boxxle, Kwirk, Castlevania: The Adventure, Gradius, Lock-N-Chase, and Motocross Maniacs. Tetris (8/8/7/8) Super Mario Land (8/8/7/8) Atari Adventure New 7800 Games and Lynx Offer Hope - The Lynx handheld might have been delayed, but don't count Atari's 8-bit dreams out just yet. Titles such as Xenophobe, Mat Mania, Planet Smashers, Alien Brigade, Sentinel, and arcade-style sports games like Ninja Golf and Blood Basketball can tide you over. There is no "Review Crew" section in this issue. Instead, reviews are contained in each different console section. And while four editors still review each game, there are more than four reviewers for this issue, so everybody's got different stuff on their plates. It's quite chaotic. Likewise, there's no dedicated section for cheat codes and strategies. These are bundled in with the reviews this issue. Before going to EGM full-time, Martin Alessi was a game counselor for FCI, as well as a member of the US National Video Game Team. The ad for Kung-Fu Heroes is clearly translated into English straight from the original Japanese, and not given an editorial pass by a native speaker. "The Faces Behind the Phone Lines" is phenomenal from a historical perspective, providing information about how many people companies employed, the volume of calls taken, the most commonly-requested information, caller demographics, and even the counselors' personal feelings about magazines publishing hints and tips which allow readers to take shortcuts or solve problems without needing to work things out for themselves. EGM manages to misspell the final word of the headline in the lead-off article in the 'Nintendo Players' section. "Heighths"? Really, guys? Some of the games rumoured to be forthcoming for the NES, like Super Bombjack and Blaster Master 2 never make it out. The review for P.O.W. includes a cheat code to give you twenty lives, which is exactly the sort of thing game counselors are griping about magazines giving out just a few pages back. Then again, they follow it up with a code to double, triple, or even quadruple the difficulty of Blazing Lasers, so maybe they're even. No one mentions it, but Last Battle on the Genesis is Fist of the North Star, based on the anime and manga of the same name, with the serial numbers inexplicably filed off.

  24. Starting with the April 1996 issue, GamePro began numbering their issues on the cover as other magazines of the day did. However, the number they chose for the April 1996 issue was inflated by 10 over the actual number of issues produced up to that point. The reason for this discrepancy wasn't revealed until issue 154, where reader Nick Caputo wrote in about their 150th issue cover showcase showcasing only 140 covers and wondering where the missing ten wound up. GamePro's response: So there you have it! Rather than create more confusion by arbitrarily assigning numbers to those different special issues, or re-numbering every issue after #80 to correspond with what the issues should be numbered, we've chosen simply to skip over them in the database the same way the GamePro staff did, and keep the numbers on the covers matched with the numbers on the website. If this seems confusing, you're not alone. It's a question we've been wrestling with for years. We hope our solution to the problem is satisfactory, and you can rest assured we aren't missing or intentionally overlooking these ten issues. The 10 special issues included in the inflated issue count are: The Adventures of GamePro Issue 1 (June 1990) The Adventures of GamePro Issue 2 (January 1991) The Adventures of GamePro Issue 3 (August 1991) GamePro Presents Handheld Video Games (Spring 1991) GamePro Presents Handheld Video Games (October/November 1991) Video Game Greatest Hits (July/August 1991) GamePro's Celebrity Video Gamers (August/September 1991) GamePro's 16-Bit Video Gaming (February 1992) GamePro's 16-Bit Video Gaming (May 1992) GamePro's 16-Bit CD-ROM Video Gaming (January 1993)

Of course Tifa won "Hottest Game Babe". Strangely enough, Lara Croft wasn't the runner-up on this one, but Laura Lewis from Enemy Zero on the Saturn was. Clearly nobody on staff was comfortable picking a hot dude for their 'best hunk' category, as their runner-up is Abe from Abe's Oddyssee. Umm...Duke Nukem, anybody? Anyone else find it ironic that the magazine which has had Lara Croft on their cover more times than anybody else is also throwing a "Most Overexposed" award No surprise, the PlayStation and Game Boy come out the clear winners in the battle royale, while the Sega Saturn and Genesis bring up the rear. Both the Miyamoto biography and behind-the-scenes look at controller creation are fascinating pieces which remain relevant even today. The super game list doesn't list everything the magazine ever reviewed. They omit plenty of software from the smaller systems like the CD-i and the Neo Geo, and ignore everything prior to the 16-bit generation, but still...this is one incredible index with some great artwork thrown in throughout, and some little side-bars about titles worth a second look, and miniature essays on subjects like why Link's Awakening is the best Zelda game. Really cool! Saturn Bomberman supports up to 10 players simultaneously. 'Best Tricks of the Year' includes a massive sidebar detailing ten great internet sites to use for finding cheat codes. Needless to say, they're all defunct at this point. Man, remember Happy Puppy? People are still trying to find that Lara Croft nude code. EGM2 did it as an April Fools joke in issue 34. Somebody forgot to label the cheat codes for Command & Conquer and Crusader: No Remorse in the Saturn section. This makes it look like Bug Too! is an absolutely insane game. According to a sidebar, the Konami Code is the most-overused cheat code of all time.
