Interesting Stuff:

  • "Daikatana" is not a real word in Japanese. The name comes from two kanji which, when read together, mean 'large sword'. But kanji can have multiple readings depending on whether they are using 'on yomi' or 'kun yomi' form, and those two forms are never mixed. Thus, the pair of kanji which Romero used to make the word can either be read as 'daito' or 'okatana', but not 'daikatana'. The more you know... :)
  • The article on Star Trek: Secret of Vulcan Fury is one of the few bits of information we have about Interplay's much-anticipated Star Trek title which was one of the many casualties when Interplay went out of business.
  • One of the most important pieces of news reported in this issue concerned Electronic Arts' purchase of Maxis, which led to the publication of The SIms only a couple of years later. Unfortunately, in other EA news, two of their planned titles, Chromaform and Crucible, never see the light of day.
  • The PC port of Resident Evil is the only uncut, uncensored version of the game released in North America.
  • Arriah Hopkins got her baby picture printed in the letters column. Just a few years went by (1997 - 2011), and she was making YouTube videos like a pro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zEGy4d_zcg
  • Did anybody ever win any of those "Ultimate Gaming Rig" contests? Like, seriously, do you know anybody who won?
