  1. I'm resurrecting a beat-up 486 right now. Waiting on a 14 pin VGA cable to see if it's dead. Seems to be missing the expanded video ram card, which may horribly limit Windows performance, and it throws horrible POST beeps when I try to swap in an ISA MPEG decoder card to use as the primary display (as it's the only ISA card I have with a 15 pin VGA port). No substitute for actual DOS. Unless you use DOS 7, some hacked-up version of DOS that purportedly has all of the strengths of 6.22 and then some.
  2. If nothing else, this will be handy for identifying software and games whose names are forgotten, with the thumbnails available. The DOS emulation is okay, but without being able to throttle the clock speed with a turbo switch, ugh.
  3. Meanwhile, a man would set the games on a desk and photograph them with nothing else in-frame, if possible. There is an image illustrating this dichotomy, but since all search sites have been cluttered with garbage, finding it is nigh unto impossible.
  4. Just because something is old, does not necessarily guarantee that it will become a classic. Most games since 2006 age like milk.
  5. Neat. I have the Twilight Princess version of Link, but if I didn't, I'd probably grab this one. Whenever the yen starts tanking is when I buy stuff from AmiAmi.
  6. I dressed as Umbrella Civilian Supression. So, basically SWAT with body armor and Umbrella corporation patches. Alas, work frowns upon bringing firearms in, so the costume was incomplete.
  7. Nice article. Ninja Gaiden 3's difficulty is for bullshit reasons. Arbitrarily changing the original game's rules to keep people who were gods at NG1 and 2 from beating the game on a weekend rental and returning it. Play NG3 for a while, then play Ninja Rukenden 3. The latter will feel like you're using cheats, by comparison.
  8. So long as corporate-sanctioned emulation is a thing, classic game software will be sold forever, in cycles.
  9. Just don't pay reseller-dollars for good games just because you feel you have to have them. An SD2SNES is about $200, so pit that against the price of the three most expensive games you might have a strong desire for. Batteries can be replaced, and even if you have no training, it's not hard to install a CR2032 socket for easier battery replacement years down the road. The power connector assembly of the SNES occasionally has issues with the center post of the power connector breaking off, but the whole thing can be replaced for pennies. To remove permanent marker, scribble over it with a whiteboard marker. It will loosen the markings, and allow you to wipe it off with a cloth or paper towel. This also works with ballpoint pen ink on glossy paper, like labels. Anything porous is a lost cause, though.
  10. A more recent complaint is that they keep diverting funds away from development, and each successive release of the device pales in comparison to the original.
  11. Short stretches every few months. I just put everything in a small stack. At the moment, the only systems I have hooked up are the PS2 and PS3. Neo Geo went back in the box after sitting on the floor for six months. Saturn, SNES, NES, Genesis + 32X + Sega CD, TG16, 3DO, and Master System are all leaning against each other in the corner.
  12. Here are a couple. http://theralphretort.com/raspberry-pi-shits-consumers/ https://www.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/comments/2jfcoi/raspberry_pi_twitter_account_takes_official_and/
  13. Not that it really answers your question, but there is lot of bad politics wrapped up in the RasPi staff. Wouldn't buy one even with counterfeit money.
  14. Look up the famous Amiga Power article on the subject. Evermore, publishers cater to the loudest whiners, since Facebook has taken the place of the video game magazine as the crowd to please under pain of bankrupsy. Buying reviews is more blatant than ever, but the Social Network scum will tell you that wanting ethics in gaming journalism means you hate women or some other idiotic malarky.
  15. Not so much a game, but Tomcat: The F-14 Flight Simulator. It blew my mind that something so complex could be on the mere 2600. Even the difficulty switches are part of the game interface. I believe I got up to Lieutenant Junior Grade in it, but I haven't played it since like 1989. Yar's Revenge is high on my list. Pinball and Midnight Magic. Joust. Beh, hard to choose just one.
  16. ^^^ A refurbished Duo R and an Everdrive will let you play everything but the arcade titles, and there were only a few of those. Why get a refurbished Duo? So you don't have to mail yours out to someone to replace all of the failing capacitors, or if you have the engineering education, do the tiresome job yourself. I just have a TG16 that I got from a yardsale for a Hamilton, and the price that a Turbo CD and accessories for on eBay, UNTESTED, is usually far in excess of the cost of a Duo-R.
  17. eBay's not so bad, if you have patience. Most of my systems that didn't come from yard sales and thrift stores a decade or so ago have come from a local classic game shop that's really cool. Good pricing, great owner. Alas, I have almost everything (hardware-wise) now, and I find it harder and harder to work up the drive to look for more stuff to buy.
  18. Hoppe's No. 9 solvent, for cleaning guns. Really good at cleaning contacts. Smells like banannerz, but it's not good to inhale, of course. Alcohol for minor stuff, Hoppe's 9 for the genuine corrosion, because that's what it's for.
  19. Crystal Pepsi tasted like regular cola. I miss it to some degree. Now, 7-Up Gold, THAT was cinnamon. It was really nice, and felt like it fit in between rootbeer and cream soda. But that was back when everything was in 16 ounce (or smaller) glass bottles with foam labels.
  20. Yeah, what with home ISPs taking every opportunity to cap, block, or otherwise put their boot on the neck of everyone who does more with the internet than get into urinating contests on Facebook, it almost makes you miss the days of DirectConnect not being full of viruses, malware, and Captain Picard. Anyway, the internet at large (and especially /vr/) awaits the revival of the greatest archive of classic gaming publications.
  21. I append Megaupload's history to Mega, and Megaupload had always been good to the game modding community. Where else could you host your original maps and mods when webhosting companies would constantly screw off into the night without warning? Never mind the BS that was pulled on Megaupload, as in "don't delete these infringing files, we need them for evidence later" becoming "hah! we have the evidence, against MEGAUPLOAD, who we ordered to retain files they would have otherwise erased at the request of copyright holders!" This would be a faster way if only to create more immediate seeders for more permanent torrents.
  22. I too, would use Mega over Rapidshare, for very obvious reasons. For the uninitiated, Rapidshare is the worst thing since habanero eye drops.
  23. The Jeff Rovin books deserve nothing but fire. In fact, the same goes for the author. He dared claim that Megaman 2 was inferior to the first game. Perhaps I jest.
