  1. I think it's just in your copy. Because the example you gave us is different in my issue. It reads: Do you think everyone has seen it? It's just a question from the reader. I don't believe there are any more text afterwards. Your copy also ended with a quote and mine doesn't.
  2. Although Microsoft has changed their used games policies, I am not changing my decision to get the Wii U and PS4 first. Microsoft had it coming by taking away our freedom for exchanging of used games. They only changed their minds due to people's outcries, and all the folks who (even Xbox fans) jumped onto the PS4 bandwagon. Read my post here: http://community.retromags.com/topic/9412-xbox-one-announcement/#entry38950
  3. It appears that Microsoft has changed their policies concerning used games with Xbox One. They said that the Xbox One games will work just like the Xbox 360, and you no longer have ANY restrictions to buying, selling, borrowing, or trading used games to anyone or any store. You also can play all games offline if you wish, no need to connect to the Internet every 24 hours. Seems Microsoft saw how the gaming community has changed over to the PS4, and it would be a total loss to Microsoft for the awful used game policies before. So Xbox fans, this is good news for everybody. Read the article here: http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/update
  4. Yay! I got my new EGM today too. I scanned through the issue, and it seems to be getting better. I have to give props to EGM for trying. The fact that they survived this long within the confines of such a weak economy shows they got some passion. The current issue (#260.0) brought back two old features, "After Thoughts" and "Grudge Match." Plus, the "EGM's Top 20, Our Favorite Game Systems of All Time," section is a cool feature as well. EGM is beginning to get a little old school again, both magazine-wise and retro gaming for the fan-service. I hope this is a sign of better things to come for the magazine.
  5. As someone said in another forum, "Sony's motto: 'We love gamers.', Microsoft's motto: 'Bend over gamers.'" lol. If you watched both press conferences, that is the exact impression I got from them.
  6. As I said in previous posts, I will get the PS4 first for the principle of it, but not at launch. The price is also better when it comes to a new console than Xbox One. I do need a killer app though before buying any of the next-gen consoles. But from the way it looks, I would rather get a Wii U at this point. As usual, it's the cheapest, and I'm a Mario and Zelda fan. :-)
  7. As promised, I'm back fresh from Sony's E3 Press Conference this evening. Here are the highlights that I found most interesting. This adds to my info when Sony first announced the Playstation 4. 1. Playstation 4 will cost $399.99 is available to pre-order now at Amazon. Pre-order here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BGA9WK2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00BGA9WK2&linkCode=as2&tag=retromags-20 No launch date yet, but all speculations point to November 2013 as well. So the PS4 is $100.00 less than Xbox One. Sony wins round one. :-) 2. The system looks much cooler than the Xbox One. Check out some pictures here: http://www.cinemablend.com/games/PS4-Console-Check-Out-First-Images-Here-56588.html Sony wins round two. 3. Most of the games announced back in February are pretty much the same. But I would highlight that Final Fantasy versus XIII is still coming out and its name changed to Final Fantasy XV. Dark Sorceror also looks interesting. Kingdom Hearts III was also announced. Check the complete games list here for launch titles and beyond: http://www.ign.com/wikis/playstation-4/PlayStation_4_Games Update: Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III will also be released on Xbox One. They are not exclusive to PS4. Microsoft and Sony tie round 3. I like games on both consoles, especially the exclusives. 4. Sony has confirmed that the Playstation 4 will support used games 100% and does not require you go to online every 24 hours! You can play all games offline if you want. Sony wins round 4 with a big applause for keeping the old used games model intact. Well, as you can see, I'm much more excited about PS4 than Xbox One. If I was to buy a system at launch, it's PS4 all the way!
  8. The Xbox One is now available for pre-order for $499. Launch date has not been announced yet, but will be released sometime in November 2013. Pre-order your system now at Amazon.com if you don't mind the used games mess. Hehe. This was from today's Microsoft E3 2013 Press Conference. I will be back later for more info from Sony's Conference for Playstation 4 stuff. http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-One-Console/dp/B00CMQTVK0/ref=sr_tr_sr_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1370899033&sr=1-1&keywords=xbox+one Check the list of Xbox One launch and launch window titles here: http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/List_of_Xbox_One_Games I think the notable titles for me are the following: Killer Instinct (yay, they finally remade it) Dead Rising 3 Dark Souls II (for Xbox 360, PS3, & PC only--not next-gen title, but still looking forward to it) D4 (spiritual successor to the D series on Sega Saturn and Dreamcast) Crimson Dragon (from the makers of Panzer Dragoon for Sega Saturn) Dragon Age 3: Inquisition Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain The Witcher 3 Quantum Break (from makers of Alan Wake) Project Spark (creative RPG where you customize your own world, enemies, style, etc.) Ryse (cool looking third-person, medieval hack n slash but too much QTE [Quick Time Events] action similar to God of War) Below (from makers of Super Brothers: Sword and Sworcery on Mobile and PC) Halo (not sure if this is part of the main series, maybe just a side story. No actual title was given, just Halo.) Destiny (from Bungie, original makers of Halo)
  9. Howdy everybody, Microsoft updated their used game and "always on" internet connection policies today for the Xbox One. So basically, everything I have found out so far are true except for a few more details. Your family members can play the game on the same console you registered the game with. Up to 10 family members can do this by logging on to their gamertag. Only one person can play the game at a time through your shared game library. You can give the game to a friend (or family member). But he or she has to be on your friends list for at least 30 days. Plus, you can only give it to them one time. You can only give it away. You can't let anybody borrow it. This has something to do with disabling the game on your console and enabling it on their Xbox One. So uh, this pretty much prevents anybody from selling the game on the used games market like Ebay or flea markets. Well you still can, but you gotta pay for it twice (once at the flea market and then on Xbox Live). So nobody is gonna do that. Loaning or renting games won't be available at launch (that means no gamefly or playground loaning of games to your mates until, hopefully, sometime in the future). But they are exploring "possibilities" with their partners. You can still trade in your games at retailers like Gamestop, which what they do is disable the game from your "cloud" registration via your gamertag. As I discussed before, 10 years from now if you want to buy a used copy from an "unofficial" retailer like "ahem" Ebay, you're out of luck if Microsoft decides to stop selling the license. Hehe. Remember that if you own the used disc, you gotta buy the game again via Xbox Live in order to play it. See what I mean? :-) Now all this stuff is Microsoft's policy when they publish their own games. Third-party publishers can decide if they are going to let you give games to other people or not. Read about the used games policy here: http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/Used_Games_and_Rentals As for the "always on" internet connection requirement, I said before that you don't need to be online all the time to play games. But Microsoft said that you must be connected to the Internet at least once every 24 hours on your own console or one hour if you are logged into another console. Otherwise, you get the boot from your game. Cool eh? Although you can watch TV, DVD, and Blu-Ray movies offline at anytime. Isn't Microsoft nice? Read all about it here: http://www.ign.com/wikis/xbox-one/Always_Online_Connection
  10. You bring up a good point. Nothing in this world is absolute. So yes, video games, itself can also die one day as well. But on the other side, we could see arcades and print game mags making a huge comeback. It could just be a turnaround where history repeats itself, and we see ourselves back in the 1980s and 90s. Case in point, Vinyl Records died once. Eventually, it came back. And now, you even see modern electronic stores like Best Buy carrying Vinyl record players everywhere. You may not know it, but there are a very large following of Vinyl Records. And they still make them as we speak. People say that no digital format these days can duplicate the way Vinyl Records sound. It just sounds good to some people. Another point is classic cars. You noticed as the years go by, older cars are being drooled over by more and more people. We walk in the streets and pretty much care less about new cars. But when a 1940s car that was redone drives by, we point at it and say how cool it looks. There is a huge industry on classic cars. We have an inherit need for attaching our thoughts to history, as per evident with this retromags web site. So whatever industry dies, if it had a large enough following, you know it'll come back eventually.
  11. Hey everyone, Tommo has updated the game release list for the Neo Geo X. Looks like you can either buy the Volumes 1-5 individually or the entire mega pack on June 25. You can pre-order the Mega Pack, which has all 15 new games at Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/NEOGEO-Mega-Pack-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B00CMDJSV0%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAI47RT7AZDNXKRMLQ%26tag%3Dgamingageonli-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB00CMDJSV0 It does say Mega Pack Vol 1. So it sounds like they will be releasing further packs in the future. Or you can just get the individual packs here. 12. I think they are talking about family accounts, which is basically the main account with sub accounts. So we are still talking about the same thing. Only the one account that the game is registered to can be played. There is a rumor that retailers like Gamestop will have access to Microsoft servers in order to deactivate the trade-in game from the registered gamertag. Therefore, they can sell it back to another person. When you are at a friend's house with your game copy, you can log into your gamertag to play it. But if your buddy want to play it on his own account, he has to buy it using Xbox Live. The game can be installed on any Xbox One hard drive and be played without the disc. However, you must buy the license online for it to be playable.
  13. I'm with EGM and @Gamer Magazine. But I only got two more issues of @Gamer, which I won't be renewing. Because anybody who is a new subscriber or renewing will get the digital version only. I am thinking of getting Edge Magazine--my first UK mag ever, since the U.S. video game mag industry is dead. I know Game Informer will be switching to digital only soon. So, I don't need to bother myself with that thing. Like most folks, I don't care about the Official Xbox Magazine either. Edit: I was also a Nintendo Power subscriber until they closed.
  14. Adding to the disaster, this Xbox One thing is getting worse by the minute. Microsoft updated today that your family and friends can't play the used copy that you let them borrow unless they pay for it. When you buy a new game and install it onto the Xbox One hard drive (it's mandatory) to play, it is assigned to your gamer profile ONLY. No one else can play that copy until they pay full price for it via Xbox Live. You can still trade it in at Gamestop, and the retail outlet will most likely sell you a used license to play it. The copy itself can't be playable unless Gamestop gives you some kind of license (a code or something, to be announced later). So used games has gotten complicated with Microsoft's new console. But the most perplexing thing is what if you want to sell a used game on Ebay 10 years from now? How is the buyer going to play it when Microsoft no longer sells the license to it anymore? Epic fail. Looks like Playstation 4 and Wii U are still in the standard used games market, not this new baloney that Microsoft is implementing. Read the article here: http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/xbox-one-games-will-be-tradeable-no-lending-games-to-friends-without-a-fee/ Update: One more point I want to mention is that the Xbox One will require an Internet connection to at least register your game. So if you live in an area where Internet is difficult to get or sparse, you are out of luck. Microsoft doesn't require an always on connection, but they do require you to have Internet for updates, game registration, etc. at least once a day. :-) Read about it here: http://kotaku.com/xbox-one-does-require-internet-connection-cant-play-o-509164109
  15. Well, I watched the live Microsoft event today of the next generation system, Xbox One. It was a huge bummer. All they talked about was how to watch TV on your new shiny Xbox One and multi-tasking. And then the show lead to 90% on new sports games. Blah, the only thing good about it was a new IP called Quantum Break from Remedy (from the makers of Alan Wake). The trailer was confusing anyways. So I'm not really sure what kind of game it happened to be. Xbox One's specs are quite vague but similar to the Playstation 4 announced months ago. Let's wait until June 10th for E3. Maybe by then, Microsoft will help me stop yawning. At this point, I'm still more way excited about the Playstation 4. Sony's focus are more on games than an all-in-one set-top box like Xbox One. Let me know what you guys think. P.S. Xbox One looks more like a box than the original system. lol. It's huge! Looks like one of the earlier VCR models back in the day. Check it out: http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/05/xbox-one-analysis/
  16. egmmag.com still works, they just don't have any new digital issues since last summer. You can still subscribe to the print edition too. egmnow.com is just your daily gaming news, not really a standard magazine. However, we are still waiting for that new May/June issue of EGM in the mail. Let's all hope we don't have to wait until the middle of summer to read it. :-)
  17. Yeah, interesting facts there, E-day. However, I think it's more about greed than just trying to cut costs due to declining readership. Physical magazines depend mostly on ads, not subscription fees nor people buying at the local store. If they did depend on the latter things, they would be bankrupt in a couple of issues. If publishers never put their mags on digital devices, then readers have no option but to keep subscribing to their favorite magazines. There are enough hardcore to regular readers out there to keep the print editions going. Of course, there are the average joe who just picks up a mag here and there at the bookstands. Online web sites that have up-to-the-minute news on gaming and reviews never really cater towards the hardcore nor even regular readers. This audience only reads web sites to supplement the magazines, not to replace them. On the lighter side, we do have a ton of glowing screens everyday. Ahem, let's see...we got the TV to watch movies, news, and shows. We got our cell phones, tablets, and smart phones. We play video games on TVs and portable systems with glowing screens in all sizes. We work and play in front of computers and laptops all day. Our game controllers even have screens now like the Wii U and Playstation 4. I'm sure Xbox will soon copy that too. Our GPS systems, refrigerators, thermostats, car dashboards, stereo systems, Blu-ray/DVD players, seat warmers, vending machines, washing/dryer machines, and even toilets in Japan all have at least a LCD screen these days. So reading a printed magazine is a sigh of relief for my eyes.
  18. There's nothing like doing a bunch of research on retro consoles and their games before going out to buy them. This allows you to figure out their values and create a budget for collecting. Also, you will be well informed on what console you truly want to collect instead of just nostalgic value. A good site to start reading at is http://www.racketboy.com. This is one of the best web sites on the internet to do research, and it's just plain fun reading about your favorite or that obscure game system no one has heard before. They also have sections that talk about the most expensive and rare games currently, as well as the least expensive ones to get you collecting right away. Check out their Retro Gaming 101 area to get started: http://www.racketboy.com/guide/retro-gaming-101. I also recommend you read up books like Videogames Hardware Handbook Vol 1 & 2 by the publishers of Retro Gamer Magazine. Those two books combined will tell you what systems you're missing and a mountain of information on each console. The only problem is that they do cater towards the UK market and may talk about consoles you don't really care about. But still a good value. You can't buy the physical editions anymore, but you can download the digital copies here: https://www.imagineshop.co.uk/bookazines/videogames-and-retro.html Good journey on retro collecting!
  19. Recently, the announcement of Playstation 4 has assured us that the near future is all about digital streaming games. It is going to be a digital world, regardless if you like it or not. http://community.retromags.com/topic/8358-playstation-4-announcement/ I'm not going to talk about that aspect since I have already mentioned it many times before. In addition, the next Xbox is also rumored to be online only and requires you to install the game if you still happen to buy one of those caveman disc things. But I digress, let me go ahead and talk about Game Informer, @Gamer Magazine, and EGM--three final multi-platform game magazines in the U.S. that have print editions. You might be asking what about the relaunched Gamefan? Well, I guess they still exist. But barely. http://www.gamefanmag.com In the latest @Gamer issue (April 2013), there was a letter from a fellow gamer that read, "Is it true @Gamer is going digital only? How will we get each issue's coupons?" Response from @Gamer, "The magazine is not going 'digital only' just yet. Any subscriber who currently gets a print version will continue to do so until their time of renewal, at which point they will be switched to the digital version. Coupons are sent via e-mail and can be redeemed either online or in your Best Buy store." That pretty much tells the whole story. @Gamer will become digital only this year as I suspected. On the Game Informer front, Gamestop employees have been pushing the digital version to new subscribers and renewals aggressively. Here is an article about it: http://kotaku.com/5913419/gamestop-says-they-wont-mess-with-your-game-informer-subscription-after-all Definitely a huge sign that Game Informer will go digital only at the latest next year. As for EGM, I didn't have much hope for it since they became bi-monthly. They are still sending issues, but are usually late or sporadic. Their online presence, http://www.egmnow.com, is still strong. I assure you they will be migrating to digital only either before or at the same time as the other two magazines. All we have left is the Official Xbox Magazine, the only system-specific game magazine left in the U.S. I assume they will close it down completely once it becomes the lone ranger in the marketplace, or Future US/Microsoft will make it become digital-only to match Nintendo's philosophy of modern gaming media (i.e. death of Nintendo Power). There's the fan-based Nintendo Force Magazine http://www.nintendoforcemagazine.com, which is cool. I hope they will last a long time. I understand that some of you would rather have the digital version because of space issues, convenience, save trees, etc. However, like I said numerous times, nothing can replace print, perhaps an alternative to it but not replacement. The UK game magazine market is still pretty strong. We should take a few lessons from them about quality print media. I admire their ability to maintain high-quality magazines, both in content and sheer quantity. Doesn't this sound like video game magazines in the U.S. over a decade ago? Perhaps if we kept the quality writing in these magazines, people wouldn't migrate to digital devices so easily. I would say so.
  20. Well, I accumulated my collection from the following places over the years. 1. http://www.ebay.com -- Ebay is always the best place online for its large customer base. So you can get really rare stuff if you look everyday. 2. http://www.playntrade.com -- They have local stores around the country. Check to see if there is one near you. 3. http://www.gogamexchange.com -- These guys also have local stores. I bought a majority of my classic systems and games here. 4. http://www.craigslist.org -- Another good source online. I recommend not just going local areas. Contact people in other states as well. They usually will ship it to you anyways. 5. http://www.amazon.com -- Here is another large marketplace of folks selling classic systems and games. Some sellers here can be quite overpriced. So watch out. Do research on Ebay to see the current value first. 6. http://www.jjgames.com -- Good site that actually tells you the condition of the system or game before you buy it. I recommend it, fast shipping and games in great condition even though it only says "good condition." 7. Flea markets -- I used to search these local places when I was younger. But the system or game condition is usually lame. But you never know, sometimes you can find retro gems once in a while.
  21. That's cool. If you still have it, would you be willing to sell it to me? :-) I have a decent collection of games for the Master System. But I still need to get Golden Axe Warrior, Ninja Gaiden, and probably Michael Jackson's Moonwalker.
  22. Well, to me, I don't really care if a system had any good games on it. I'll buy a retro system just to have it. I plan to own all retro consoles that were released in North America eventually. I'm only missing a few right now, such as what I've mentioned--Atari Jaguar, Philips CD-I, Intellivision, Turbo Express, Sega Game Gear, and the Odyssey. But congrats to DPsx7 for getting the Neo Geo X. I think you'll like it. If you happen to have a buddy who got the system, ask him or her to bring over an arcade stick to do some multiplayer action! Nothing like a game of local co-op. One game that I'm looking into buying for the Sega Master System is Golden Axe Warrior. It's rare and many people never heard of it. But it was Sega's answer to The Legend of Zelda. I heard great things about it.
  23. It's amazing what you can do with Photoshop! So when is Nintendo going to make a 2D, 64-bit Metroid Wii U? Maybe they need to hire this guy to make it! I'll pretend the 3D Metroid games never existed. I mean, Metroid Prime series and Metroid: Other M were decent in there own right. But we really need to get back to the series' 2D roots in 64-bit HD glory! Now I'll buy that in a heartbeat!
  24. I will definitely be getting those games next month. So I will inform you guys on what the "update" will be about. My mentality is that I would rather spend money on an authentic re-release of Neo Geo and its games than modern stuff. The Neo Geo AES is nice but still way overpriced. This is the next best thing to experiencing Neo Geo without spending major bucks. Hey, at least I'm making a statement that I want to support the retro community. If they re-released the Atari Jaguar or the Philips CD-I, I would get that too! lol.
  25. The Neo Geo X is currently on sale at Amazon for $149.99. Good price if you've been on the fence about getting it. Remember that Tommo has finished releasing the final batch of Neo Geo X Gold Limited Edition units. So after they are sold out, they will release the regular systems. I assume either just the portable unit by itself with no docking station (since it's coming out in April as well) or just a system without the Ninja Masters game bundled with it. http://www.amazon.com/NEOGEO-X-GOLD-Limited-Electronic-Games/dp/B0093G9VOI/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1364321722&sr=1-1&keywords=neo+geo+x Also, there will be five new Neo Geo X game cards coming out next month. Already for pre-order at Amazon. Each card will have 3 new games on them. You also get a free travel charge cable for your Neo Geo X portable unit with a purchase of a game card. http://www.amazon.com/Neogeo-Classics-Vol-Not-Machine-Specific/dp/B00BQR56GO/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1364321968&sr=1-2&keywords=neo+geo+x Here's the press release about the total of 15 new games releasing next month (according to Amazon pre-orders, it will be April 25, 2013): http://neogeox.com/tommo-announces-neogeox-classics
