  1. i try not to get nostalgic for paper or cardboard (keeps the cost down when collecting old games!) but i can't quit my love of the first ~75 issues of Nintendo Power.

my magazine holy grail was to own the first issue of Nintendo Fun Club News. When the price shot up on that and it seemed like it would never be within reach, i shifted and tried to collect all of the Nintendo Power Flash issues (the Canadian equivalent of Fun Club News). Luckily, due to THIS VERY FORUM, there was a kind gentleman from Germany who had a complete set of FCN and NP Flash! i was able to make a deal with him, and i am glad to have them in my collection.

Also, in NP #10, there was an offer for a mail-in exclusive poster ("Team Power Tips"). It took me quite a while to track that one down too.

i don't relate DIRECTLY to this, as i've never felt the need to play absolutely EVERYTHING, but do deal with something similar.

if a game/series comes out that i'm interested in, i have to start at the beginning. take the Metroid series, for example. I won't play Super Metroid until I beat the original and the GameBoy sequel. for offshoots like the Metroid Prime series, i could skip to that series, but couldn't jump in with the upcoming Prime 4. I'd have to play through all three previous entries (i beat the original Prime back when it came out for the GameCube, but haven't played the others).

i want to point out that 7 months after this post, a worldwide pandemic broke out, granting me weeks and weeks of free time since i was laid off from work. I used that time to do exactly what i explained in my post: Playing through Metroid 1, 2, Super Metroid, Fusion, Zero Mission, and ultimately Dread as well. Started Prime but wasn't feeling it, so i put it back on the backburner. Hopefully it doesn't take another disaster to make me pick it up again.

Took the same approach to CastleVania (beat 1-4 & Symphony of the Night) and Bloodstained (beat Curse of the Moon 1 & 2 and Ritual of the Night) and Kid Icarus (1, 2, & Uprising). It was a hell of a summer.

I'm trying to use that as motivation to keep playing through game series that i've long wanted to complete- back in December & January i beat Mega Man 1-8 & X. Started the Luigi's Mansion series (beat the first two, so far i'm about 1/3 of the way into #3).

  3. I received Luigi's Mansion 3 as an X-Mas gift, so i took the opportunity to play through the series. i beat Luigi's Mansion 1 and 2 earlier this year, just started #3 this weekend. decently fun so far.

also was working my way through the Mega Man games. beat 1-8 and X, but Mega Man & Bass (Game Boy Advance version) was giving me troubles and frustration so i shelved it for good for now. Ended up ordering a repro of the SNES version, so i'll probably get back on that horse at some point.....

  4. i can't help you out, but i commend you on this. Collecting all of the cards is something i looked into once upon a time but was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of cards released.

    Good luck rounding this out!

Bomberman would be a really good addition with his unique style of bombing in straight lines. Isn't he already an assist trophy?

yes, both Bomberman and Waluigi are already assist trophies. that's what i was trying to imply. guess it didn't come across that way.

mildly disappointed that Crash didn't make the cut.

i'm pretty ambivalent towards Sora- i've also never played a Kingdom Hearts game. But he seemed to be one of, if not the, most requested character, so i'm glad so many people got what they were requesting.

  6.  quick story about this movie:

i watched it when it was new to video and liked it, but didn't love it. a year or two later, i was in the mood for a Will Ferrell movie (i think i had just wanted Elf and wanted more of that kind of comedy). Decided to watch Anchorman again, as i "liked it enough to put on in the background while i do other stuff". i couldn't take my eyes off the screen, and laughed my ass off the entire way through. I don't know why it hit me so much more the second time, but it's now one of my favorite comedies.

What kind of crack-smoking fiends have managed to jack the price of Clock Tower II: The Struggle Within (universally recognized as one of the worst horror games ever made) to over $350? I'm not done entering my PS1 collection yet, but this one blows even Koudelka, a phenomenal 4-disc RPG with light survival horror elements, out of the water. This should not be the most valuable game in my PS1 library.

    I do not understand. :)

well at least you've got Madden '04 to balance out the value. 🤣

P.S. why did they release a 2004 version of that on the PS1? the PS2 had been out for THREE YEARS! and holy shit, i just checked and Madden '05 released on the PS1 too? is this crazy land?

  8. in a word, yes.

my favorite game of all time is the original Legend of Zelda, which i have beaten dozens of times but always come back to. there's something about those classic NES games that i just can't quit (cue a Brokeback Mountain .gif). SMB1-3, LoZ 1-2, Kirby's Adventure, etc.). And there's even more games that i never beat but i still want to play all the time. Adventure Island, Milon's Secret Castle, Double Dragon, Battletoads, the list goes on.....). I play all of these casually, so there's virtually no chance i will ever beat them, but i just enjoy running through the first few levels.

On another note, last year was the first time i gave an honest playthrough to the NES Metroid, and i fell in love. I wanted to replay it immediately after beating it. Even after i went through Metroid 2 and Super Metroid, I just really wanted to replay the NES game.
