I wonder what the highest priced auction for a gaming mag has been?  That guide just sold for more than a copy of Famitsu #1.  Maybe Milon's Secret Castle is that person's favorite game (I ...suppose it's possible?😅  But I'm assuming its desirability is solely based on its scarceness)

i will admit that i do enjoy the game. definitely not a favorite or anything, but yeah the value comes from its rarity. I've only seen a couple change hands in the 10 years i've known about it even existing.

Final bump! I have hundreds of auctions up right now, ending this weekend, comprised of all the remaining magazines left:

definitely some solid quality stuff in there. I was watching the Milon's Secret Castle guide (those very rarely pop up for sale!) but looks like a couple people want it more than i do.

Nice list.  Mine only allowed for games first released in 1988, regardless of region.  Thus, Mario 3 was allowed, since it was first released in Japan in 1988, despite not being available in the USA till 1990.

If I had allowed for games released in 1988 in any region, I might have included some of yours as well.

I absolutely would have had Bubble Bobble very high on my list, and I may have included Double Dragon, Simon's Quest, or Zelda II as well, except all of those games were released in Japan in 1987.  They all definitely would have made my list if it was NES-only, but I'd be hard-pressed to bump the PC games off my list in their favor (though as I said, I would have definitely made room for Bubble Bobble somehow).🙂

i never got too into PC games, and the NES was/is my first love. if we're talking late '80s/early '90s, my list is going to be practically all NES.

definitely some fun lists here already. i like that we've all used slightly different criteria, but all are accurate.

  4. here's my list. i tried to only include games that were released in North America in 1988. Apologies if a date is off here or there. LOTS of good stuff came out this year!

    #10- RC Pro-Am!
didn't really like this when i was a kid but i can appreciate it more now

    #9- Bionic Commando
the inability to jump didn't bother me too much, because that robotic arm was awesome!

    #8- Milon's Secret Castle
had this game as a kid. never really understood it, never got very far, but i always enjoyed it. some day, this game will get its due respect.

    #7- Castlevania 2
played this a lot. actually had this but not CV1, so this was really my introduction to the series.

    #6- Bubble Bobble
my wife's favorite game. good, clean fun.

    #5- Contra
THE epitome of "run 'n' gun". plus it popularized the konami code, which i have tattoo'd on my leg.

    #4- Adventure Island
another series that i love that never really gets the praise i feel it should. also likely led to my lifetime dislike of eggplants.

    #3- Double Dragon
i have always loved this game. the sequel is apparently closer to the arcade and therefore more beloved, but give me this version any day of the week!

    #2- Super Mario Bros 2
still love this game. the ability to pick Luigi was aces.

#1- Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link.
Zelda is one of my all-time favorite series, so this of course tops the list. I still have this giant overworld map i made back in the '90s. I know it gets a bad rep, but i always enjoyed it.

  5. in all honesty, they could have had that person on staff already, so the need was fulfilled before your application was processed.

i mean, i'll hate on EGM with the best of them, but there could be a reasonable explanation. not that you'll ever get one. (just like a prepaid subscription. BOOM!)

  6. welcome! umm......back!

i know the Playstation Classic doesn't have the best reputation, but there are a TON of great games that came out for the OG PSX. maybe someday more of it will be appreciated (and not just the RPGs)

OAlso, yeah, that Censored Gaming channel is a time-sink extraordinaire. I love it!

and now I've spent way too much time watching that channel. thanks, all!

  8. i don't relate DIRECTLY to this, as i've never felt the need to play absolutely EVERYTHING, but do deal with something similar.

if a game/series comes out that i'm interested in, i have to start at the beginning. take the Metroid series, for example. I won't play Super Metroid until I beat the original and the GameBoy sequel. for offshoots like the Metroid Prime series, i could skip to that series, but couldn't jump in with the upcoming Prime 4. I'd have to play through all three previous entries (i beat the original Prime back when it came out for the GameCube, but haven't played the others).

This leads me to be VERY hesitant about starting new games/series, as it could quickly add 5 games to my "To Play" list before i could even start on a new one that interests me. This also relates to movies, comic books, and other ventures too. It's frustrating but also deeply rewarding when i am completely caught up.

  9. gave up on Sonic Mania on the Switch. I'm having WAY too much trouble with these boss fights. my brain just doesn't comprehend Sonic games correctly.

now alternating Hollow Knight (Switch) and Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii). enjoying them both quite a bit. neither of the Mario Galaxy games really get much respect, but they're solid follow-ups to Mario 64.

I know I always sound like a curmudgeonly asshole, but I stand completely by my opinion that the only reason any of those mags are popular around here is pure nostalgia.   Any adult picking up an issue of Nintendo Power, GamePro, Game Players (or what have you) for the very first time in the year 2019 is going to see it clearly for what it is - a publication aimed at kids and teens, and not particularly interesting or insightful to read.

I'm NOT insulting those mags by saying this!!!  The entire reason most people visit this site is out of nostalgia for the games and mags of their youth.  If those mags hadn't been written for kids, none of us would have been interested in them back then, and this entire hobby likely wouldn't exist.

Embrace nostalgia, but recognize it for what it is.  Careful examination of the things you loved as a kid may reveal that they weren't as amazing as you remember (oh Transformers, how could I have ever remembered you fondly?).  If you can't accept the fact that everything you remember is likely tinted with rose-colored glasses, it's perhaps best to leave things in the past where they're still as good as you remember, rather than be disappointed by evaluating them from an adult's point of view.  So if you're going to try to find the best video game magazine, keep in mind who their target audience was lest you judge them unfairly.

Personally, of the mags I used to read, I can still appreciate Nintendo Power and EGM out of nostalgia, and I can still appreciate various PC game mags completely on their own merits.

All solid points kitsunemi. While i'm not disagreeing, let me point out my perspective.  Personally, i live within my nostalgia.

I love flipping through old Nintendo Power mags, while still admitting that they were 100% written for kids. I feel like as long as you can accept something for what it is, not what you think it is/remember it being/etc., those things can still be appreciated.  The games that NP pushed heavily tended to be some of the better games, so even looking past the cheesiness, it did separate the cream from the crop somewhat.

As for Transformers, i LOVE '80s cartoons, despite the (many) flaws looking at them through 2019's eyes. TF and GI Joe are still in regular rotation in my household. As is Captain N: The Game Master, if that tells you anything!  😝

Another ancient RPG that somehow found a second life in Japan.  This time it's 1982's Wizardry II, which was released in Japan in December 1986.  This guide is from March 1987.

This game is notoriously hardcore in that, should your party perish (and the game is hard as balls, so they are VERY likely to do so), your saved games are erased and you're forced to create a new party in Wizardry 1, then play through that entire game again before you can import your characters to this game and try again.  The only way to avoid this was to cheat and create backups of your saves or else yank your game disks out of the computer and shut it down if party death looked imminent.  Kids today just don't know...

Somehow this extreme sadism appealed to the Japanese and Wizardry became a huge hit there.

holy shit! that would take insane levels of dedication to legitimately beat. I've never heard of that before and am horrified/amazed/intrigued.

We should try to make some kind of thing here that lists all the pack-in stuff various magazines had for each issue.  Nintendo Power was probably second only to GamePro in just how much crap they managed to shove into that plastic casing.  They had that subscriber bonus issue (which was just a catalog), those Pokemon comics, the pull out posters that ruin the magazine when you take them out since there's part of an article on the back, rare Pokemon Eon Ticket, a whole bunch of catalogs (there was this blue one from 2003 I'd like to see someone archive) and the like.  Does something like this seem feasible to anyone here?  This does seem like the kind of stuff that tends to fall through the cracks.  Especially those goddamn posters.

someone on another forum documented all the Nintendo Power variant covers/posters/extras.

  13. the Marvel movies are, without a doubt, the most exciting cinematic franchise that i've ever followed. And i LOVE the Star Wars franchise. I can't wait for Endgame. for the last few Marvel movies i've (more or less) avoided trailers and am more than happy with my virginal viewings.

i CANNOT wait for Endgame. no other movies have built up like this, it is an amazing experience.
