  1. Oh, were you quoting the shipping price to Japan?  I wasn't logged in or anything.  I set it to give me the prices in $$, and it just assumes I'm in the US, I guess.  Of course, even if I WAS logged in, it would be a US address.  I don't have a Japanese credit card, so to sign up/log in to things like eBay or PayPal I have to use my permanent US address (aka my mom lol), since that's the billing address for my American credit card.

I didn't check to see if this guy even ships outside of the US, but like I said before, in that case, I could just have it sent to my parents, who I could collect it from when I visit over winter holidays, or they could pass it along if they ever send me a package for some other reason.  I order stuff from amazon in the US all the time and have it shipped to my parents because it's cheaper to have them to mail it to me than for me to order the same thing from amazon.jp, or else it simply isn't available here.

It's also sometimes necessary to log into my VPN from a US hub just to access certain US sites that are blocked in Japan.

You can move to another country, but you never really leave lol.

Oh no, I wasn't quoting shipping price to Japan. It looked like they were using the automatic shipping calculator so that it gave different prices to people based on location, and for my location in Arizona it was over $16, which is just silly.

  2. Hmmm.  Didn't notice that.  I do have a pet peeve about people who try to make all of their profit from the shipping.  I wish there were tighter regulations on how much shipping someone can charge based on how much the actual shipping cost is.

Although when I look at it, it says $7.35 expedited shipping.  $8.35 total isn't unreasonable (although there's no telling what the final bid would have been in a bidding war)

$7.35 to Japan? Are you sure you don't have an old address on your ebay account? lol

  3. Winning bid: $1.

    I'm weeping.

I've never seen that issue before.  If anybody notices more issues like this before they're ended FOR GOD'S SAKE PLACE A BID.   Or at least PM me about it.  I can always have it shipped to my parents if they don't ship internationally.

Sorry about that. The auction seemed really fishy to me, though. A seller with zero ratings and a shipping cost of $16+ for one magazine? IDK.

  4. Play issue 04 (actually issue 03 if you take the numbering inside the issue) has been edited and is now available. Thanks once again to marktrade for the raw scans. Note that I didn't do a lot of editing. There are so many raw scans needing editing I am more interested in getting them done in bulk rather than spending inordinate amounts of time removing the occasional crease here or there. Feel free to make any of these available here or use them as the basis for additional cleanup if so desired.

That's right, I forgot to mention the numbering issue. They started with an unnumbered premiere issue followed by a numbered issue one, but they corrected it a few issues later by skipping a number, so that the number matched the number of issues.

You shouldn't feel that you need to edit all these!

  5. 22 more issues (about 2,500 pages) of PLAY have been uploaded unedited.

A few of them had posters that I will get to later but tbh you’re not missing much. I have yet to find a magazine poster that impressed me and thought was worth the trouble of scanning. Maybe I’ll take a photo. >_>

There is an issue with a couple of the back cover pages where the glue would catch on the scanner glass and result in a distortion in the lower portion of the page. This can’t be helped. I ran the pages through multiple times with the same results. The good news however is that the distortion is not that large and does not destroy any real information. A skilled person could correct it in Photoshop.

  6. I am sorry for the delay but I have been playing massive amounts of Pokémon Go and getting into better physical shape as well! Sitting around scanning and editing magazines is a lot of physical inactivity and that can take its toll.

I will do some work tonight.

  7. Most of the UK magazines are up now. There's a couple random ones left I set aside because they didn't fit with the rest. Will get to them eventually. Right now I'm working on de-binding about 60 issues of PLAY and PC Gamer to get them off my shelves and make room for all the other magazines I've been silly enough to buy. >_<

The PLAY issues are particularly troublesome because they once included posters and the original owners decided to best way to remove the posters was to slice into the pages with a knife, so many of the pages are not separating cleanly at the spine. I have multiple copies of several issues and will choose the best one but they're not easy to filter out before-hand because the cuts are in the gutter. Would be nice to find issues with posters but based on what I've seen from eBay this past year it's both rare and expensive.

  8. I'd be interested in those scans, RetroDefense. I'll be on the lookout for another copy of issue 23 but I'd be interested if you or anyone else finds a copy of the non-CD issue as well. I'd also like to check the misprint on page 42, which contains duplicated text in the special on RAM (the main body text duplicated from page 39).

Did anyone see "The Big Sleep" with Humphrey Bogart when he goes into that book store front and grills the lady behind the counter about a Ben-Hur 1860 "with duplications?" I feel I'm turning into him. B)

  9. Mortal Kombat, for sure.

I didn't expect I'd be saying that so many years later because I originally considered the movie somewhat disappointing, but over time I've really come to appreciate it.

I thought Need for Speed was decent as well, but Mortal Kombat wins for music and cinematography.

  10. Well, lately I've been scanning stapled magazines by removing the staples and scanning the entire uncut sheet, but I've been unsatisfied with the glare that appears near the gutter in some pages. I thought I could reduce this by laying the magazines out flat under presser to remove the crease or at least lessen its effect, and while I did have a measure of success, it wasn't that much. So I think I'll go back to just cutting the magazine straight down the center, unless it's one I really like in which case I'll destaple and cut the pages by hand with a razor. That's what I'm doing now with the remaining UK magazines I have. It's going to take hours.

The existing scans I've uploaded that contain some glare can be edited still. There are probably some out there who like it because it makes it more "magazine-like." Maybe?
