  1. Of you're looking for those a great place to look is toys r us. Around here anyway lol I get lucky there and find hard to get ones there like Little Mac and gannondorf

Excellent advice. Finally found a TRU, which aren't near where I live, and they had Ganondorf. Picked up a pikachu while I was at it. Thanks again!

I want to complete the Smash cast, at least. I missed a lot when they were new, but on the other hand, this also means the scalpers have let their grips loosen on the prices.

I'm thinking the same thing. I've avoided some like DK because the character didn't interest me, but I'm thinking right now, I should go ahead and pick that up to have the original 12 at least.

  2. New Leaf is great. The Gamecube version is my favorite personally. It's got a lot of the old NRS games on it that Nintendo charges $5 a piece for these days. Scribblenauts it's a pretty good game for a 10 year old too. It let's you try to figure out puzzle type stuff by typing in anything you want. Even making zombie tacos and whatnot

Scribblenauts? I had to look into that one, and that looks pretty freaking cool! Thank you for the idea!

  3. I've got around 20 of them. I've got all the Zelda ones aside from Ganondorf, the Kid Icarus ones, and some other odds and ends that the kids wanted. I really was only after Ness and Little Mac for me, but I can't ignore the kids when they want to get some too.

  4. I grew up with the Atari 2600, though also tinkered around with the Colecovision and Intellivision, which both felt so inferior. Then I got the NES when I was 9, and...well, I never looked back.

Actually that's not true. I sometimes do look back, to be reminded of what those old Atari games were like.

    ....

Then I remember why I prefer to emulate systems from the NES onward.

I started with the Intellivision myself as well. I might be now on more modern consoles, but one of my favorite things is the Atari Classics on the iPad when used with the iCade system. Looks like a mini arcade box in my house. I'm actually debating on getting a Rasberry Pi unit and looking at setting up a MAME system/arcade box with a basic 17" monitor and x-arcade stick so the kids can play some of those arcade classics.

  5. My understanding is that the 3DS version (or at least one of them, I can't remember if there are more) is the highest-rated and most immersive overall. I believe it's called Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

Of course the Gamecube original is lots of fun and probably incredibly cheap at this point. I think a 10 year-old would dig it. Hell, if I, a 28 year-old man (at the time) could get into it enough to have arguments with his girlfriend about cutting down each others' trees and stealing the town's best furniture then I would think that just about anyone can get into it. :)

I wanted to say thank you. He had some e-shop money from Christmas saved and I mentioned New Leaf. He checked it out and ended up getting it. So far, he's really liking it. I think I'll hit the local game shops and see if I can't find the GCN version as well.

  6. I grew up in a very rural farming community. No comic shops, no game stores, and no arcade aside from a Paperboy at the Drive In. For me, the best part of childhood was not worrying about anything and being able to grab the tackle box and pole and go fishing almost whenever I wanted. We just biked out to the river and fished from the train bridge.

  7. When I was 10, I was absolutely enthralled by fighting games. So for that PS2 I'd recommend Tekken 5, Soul Calibur 3, Virtua Fighter 4, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, or Neo Geo Battle Colosseum.

I had not thought about fighting games. He does enjoy Smash Bros. so that could be a good option. I'll check those out, thank you!

  8. My junior year of college, I lived in an apartment style housing with 3 other guys. One of them was a senior who only needed 2 classes to graduate. They were Tuesday/Thursday classes. To meet his 12 hour minimum to qualify for full time status, he did a 6 hour internship on Wednesdays. He wasn't a huge gamer, but since he had the time, he asked for something that would take up some of this 4 solid days of free time. We gave him Final Fantasy 7. Thursday night, he sat down to start playing. He was still playing when I left for classes Friday. He was still there when I returned. Saturday when I woke up, the game was paused and his car was gone. He arrived a few minutes later with a couple cases of Dew and chips and little debbie snacks. That is where he stayed until Monday night when he stopped to shower and do homework. That became his routine that semester for him. He'd game from Thursday night until Monday around supper time. I don't know how many games he went through, but as a college student, I was completely in awe of him.
