I took a look at some scans from the VGH collection. Their dpi is okay, though for archival purposes I prefer higher dpi. There is some misalignment and the color balance is a tad warm - easy to fix though. The magazines I looked at seem to be in good shape in terms of condition. There is a subtle moire pattern in their scans, not too noticeable but if you pay attention you can see it - that means they downscaled their scans without using a downscaling option which incorporates sinc/lanczos kernels that eliminate that. If youre trying to downscale an image scan that has halftone, ie a magazine, then a linear or cubic downscaling interpolators are trash. I definitely recommend all scanners adopt a sinc/lanczos interpolator down scaling option as part of their editing routine when resizing scans so there is zero moire pattern. color casts, misalignments, blemishes can be fixed in editing, but you cant remove an ugly moire pattern once its there..I may scan my own remaining video games magazines.

Unfortunately, I do not have issue 73, but I see issue 64 and 65 are on the VGHF list. They have not been edited yet, but maybe your copies are better than these two... I know MigJmz was working on a couple recently, I do not if he is working on these...
How do I access the VGHF scans?

We are super close to completing Video Games: the Ultimate Gaming Magazine! I have issues 64 and 65 in mint condition and I'm thinking of grabbing #73 off ebay. I can complete the set with my efforts. But if one of our scanners already has 73 and is planning on scanning that I will refrain from buying it.
Also, is anyone already in the process of scanning or editing #64?

It took me a long while to acquire these early issues off ebay. I would regularly check.

Hi Guys,
I just purchased issue 62, 72, 99, 101, 130, 131 and 150 with the help of matrixman.
We will be missing only these earlier issue 2, 5, 6, 10, 12, 13 and 21.
I will keep going through the VGH list, we should be close to a complete set after.
Danny
I have issues 2, 5, 6, 10, 12, and 13. About to get #2 out the door then I will move on to scanning #5..

Great answers. But how did they capture the high quality screenshots from arcade machines?
-
ok good to know! I figured it had to involve a computer doing a screen grab some how.

In the really old magazines, like from the 80s and very early 90s, its obvious they simply took pictures of the TV screens with a camera. But as you get to the mid to late 90s, the quality of the screenshots published in the magazines went up; gone are screenshots that have the bloom effect and tube curvature you get from taking a picture of a TV. The screenshot quality is on par with one taken from a modern game emulator or one of those hdmi screen recorder devices. You even have screenshots captured from when the game is clearly in motion but there is zero motion blur which you would get if you had to capture it by taking a picture of the TV. Also the gameboy screenshots definitely do not look like they just took a picture of the screen, they look like screen captures that could have been grabbed from a gameboy emulator running on a computer or something.
Did TV tuner capture devices for computers exist in the 90s? Is that how they were able to capture high quality screenshots?

The Earthbound guide. It was so creative in a way that I hadn't seen before or since.
If it's the one I'm thinking of, you can download it at the following link. Nintendo released this with the Super NES classic mini so that people could download the instruction manuals for the games. https://www.nintendo.co.jp/clvs/manuals/en_us/index.html

It would be really cool if the archivists on this forum acquired those tapes and transferred them to video files and uploaded them here to archive.

Does an ADF scanner eliminate the need to crop/adjust rotation? I find this step the most annoying.
Does any of our scanners have Video Games: TUGM #73

I see what you mean, whatever scanner theyre using it renders reds to be pinkish. In addition to fixing the overall color cast to be neutral you would have to fix those colors as well for these scans.
