  1. I'm hoping with Steve Harris and a lot of the old crew on board, that EGM might be an entertaining magazine to read again. I was also completely jipped on a subscription attempt that resulted in recieving NO issues of what i paid for....but...for what it's worth, i'm willing to give it a shot--all my other mag subscriptions have run out anyway, so....why not?

  2. i've already got it paid off through my local gamestop, and am very anxious to pick this up Tuesday, (or Monday night if they have a midnight release.) for the 360. And i'm getting the collector's, because i'm a sucker for getting anything that has an OST with it. (and i'll wear the headband out of the store, and promptly lose interest in it in a day or so.)

i'm not even REALLY that great at street fighter, but i really do love playing it.

  3. http://kotaku.com/5124928/report-1up-sold-...on-egm-to-close

    Courtesy of Kotaku:

What began as a rumour last month now seems to have escalated into full-blown fact; several sites, and sources, are reporting that Ziff Davis have sold the 1UP network to competitors Hearst.

Hearst - who own UGO, many of the nation's biggest newspapers along with ownership stakes in ESPN and the History Channel - will however only be taking ownership of the network's online presence.

According to sources at GameSetWatch, this means long-running print magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly won't be along for the ride (though What They Play, run by former 1UP man John Davison, say further details will be disclosed tomorrow). This will be the last month the magazine is published, bringing to an end nearly two decades of independent, influential games editorial.

If this pans out - as seems likely - RIP, games magazines.

  4. Hey there.

I'm Joe, and am 27. My favorite systems are the Atari 2600, NES and SNES, and my hobbies are art, creating my webcomic, current gen and retro gen video games, and layout.

My magazine of choice was Diehard Gamefan.

I can't exactly think of a lot to say at the moment, but am a huge fan of Retromags, and look forward to participating in the forum a lot more often!

According to a report on Joystiq, the UGO Entertainment Network - and yes, they still exist - are in talks with Ziff Davis with an eye towards purchasing the 1UP network. These talks are in a "very advanced" stage.

The report claims that UGO plans to allow 1UP's websites (ie 1UP.com, Gamevideos) to operate independently, maintaining their own "separate entities with their own branding". Sadly for EGM fans, it's also claimed that UGO have no interest in Electronic Gaming Monthly, meaning that if this deal does take place, the end is nigh for the long-running magazine.

  6. i'm actually in newspaper design (have been for three years) and have been looking for something to do on the side involving layout and whatnot.

I have Adobe CS3 Suite and a bunch of experience with it, as well as proofing experience. I also do graphic design work as well. (shameless plug: joefreakinrocks.deviantart.com)

i've also got a partner that's got Graphic Design and also Layout experience interested as well. And we're both retroenthusiasts.

Just let me know if you guys are still interested in doing this, because now i'm super excited at the prospect.

  7. The biggest thing i liked is that i was the first person to rent it from a local movie place. I spent two days roaming around exploring, and spontaneously had my game erase (with a ridiculous time--something like 21:24?)right when i was in Tourian.

Flustered, i started over, and beat the whole game (in a very cathartic) two and a half hours.

And of course, the metroid hatchling/Hyper beam that beat the living butt out of Mother Brain sequence is still on my list of top moments in a game ever.

  8. i was really sad to hear this. not as much because of ZD and the current state of EGM (other than the SFIV feature they ran at the beginning of the year, i haven't bought one in years.), but namely for the preservation of old issues going on here.

that's a lot of history. and it's sad to see it go, at least in it's conventional format. (possibly. but seeing how print is dying everywhere else...very likely.)

and if i'm gonna read news online on VG stuff, i'm honestly gonna read Kotaku, rather than 1up..since it just rounds up all the information gathered from these mag-sites anyway.

  9. I read that very issue of Nintendo Power relentlessly. Secret of Mana was and still is one of my favorite games of all time.

I really like the presentation of 'what hit your mailbox' then. Thank you so much to everybody who contributes to this amazing project.

  10. i read NP since day one, and i stopped reading shortly before Mortal Kombat 3 was released for the SNES. My subscription ran out, and i didn't bother renewing it. I picked up a new issue the other day and flipped through it at my local bookstore....

...it's amazing how alien the magazine feels now, technological and cultural differences aside. even as far as gaming magazines go, (which seems to be an uphill struggle at this point, versus, cheaper, quicker information online.) i think nintendo power thrived when it was really a one-system market...and even when sega got all upstart...and now that there's been a console war that's been going on for what feels like forever, it's one-sidedness, well. i don't know.

i know i'll miss it as far as the namesake, but...i don't know how i'd feel if it stopped based on it's current presentation as a mag. particularly since i've been detached from it before there was a 'rumored Ultra-64' on the rise.

  11. Does a flash card really consist of a modified GBA/DS? i'm just curious.

I guess it would be a softmod. Just seems an odd selection.

I broke my first playstation trying to mod it, but that was due to being seventeen, dumb, careless, and negligent. (i didn't have a computer, a walkthrough, or any kind of technical knowhow. always a dangerous mix.) Since that, i've steered clear of playing god on my console, for fear of creating another useless abomination to collect dust in my closet.

i was stupid and updated the firmware in my PSP to play Portable Ops...and the idea of a webbrowser (as useless as it is) seemed appealing, so now i can't downgrade it without the fear of bricking the stupid thing. i've almost contemplated buying a second one, although i'm not sure 150-170 bucks is an option right now.

  12. I'm joe. i don't necessarily rock as much as you guys.

I'm absolutely amazed with the ingenuity of this project, and am scouring my attic to find some way to help contribute to retromags.

seriously. keeping this stuff archived electronically is a godsend. who knows when i may need a Fester's Quest map. :P

Incidentally, since i can't get into the magazine forum, yet. Do you guys have/need Diehard Gamefan or Game Player's magazine?...just curious.
