  1. I have never been much of a system modder myself but from looking at the posts in the "What consoles do you own?" thread it appears that some other users have modded systems. Use this thread to brag about/show off your modded systems!

I'll talk about my "modding" experiences briefly although I'm quite sure that they don't count as true mods.

Back in the day I took apart my NES Light Zapper and took out the weight, but I think that it actually felt better (more substantive) with the extra weight in it. I have also been inside the original NES console on more than one occasion. I replaced the 12 pin connector to try to get my games to load better but that's really more of a repair than a modification (and it didn't work too well). Pretty sad huh?

  2. I didn't read that far down. Very cool. Now if there was only a way to put in game genie codes too. I know it's cheating but cheating can be fun. ;)

Some games vastly benefot from unlimited ammo codes.

I love that bright blue power light on the front of that machine as well.

  3. I was wondering if anyone had ever heard of this: Swordless Zelda Questing. As you may have guessed from the name, the premise is that you try to make it through the original Legend of Zelda without using a sword.

I first heard of this challenge in Volume 26 of Nintendo Power. In the Counselors' Corner section on page 85, you can see that counselor Bruce M. White's Best NES Accomplishment is "finishing The Legend of Zelda without a sword". Who knows whether Mr. White was the first to attempt this but it is the earliest documented account of such an attempt that I can find.

I have tried this myself and it is definitely a great challenge that I highly recommend to anyone who loves Zelda. A text FAQ on Swordless Zelda Questing was formerly available at www.gamefaqs.com but when I looked at the time of this posting I could only find it HERE.

  4. Sure, there's a lot of great video game music but a lot of the time games are best experienced with music from your own collection. So what music do you like to play while getting your game on?

Here's my list of favorite bands to game to:

    NOFX

    Bad Religion

    They Might Be Giants

    Propagandhi

Smashing Pumpkins (the faster paced songs)

    Mike Ness

    Social Distortion

    The Mountain Goats

and to add a bit of humor to the mix: Brak (Space Ghost/Cartoon Planet)

  5. Based on the only post so far in the seed request forum:

Retromags has released all of the Nintendo Power issues from 1988 and 1989 in both individual torrents (contining a single issue) and package torrents (containing all the releases for a given year). I have been seeding the full year torrents but not the individual releases so as not to clutter my Azureus interface (I'm thinking of switching to uTorrent soon). I am curious as to what other users think is the best seeding policy as I can see good arguments either way.

  6. Yeah, I guess that you can do a lot of these things on a GBA or a DS if you have the know-how and a flash cartridge, but it's still a cool little device. Plus, I have been looking for a good portable MP3 player with FLAC support and having a native NES emulator would be the icing on the cake. :D

  7. That's really kind of surprising. It seems like they would make more money by just making it compatible with any system that has Windows XP or later. The Xbox version has been out for a while so a lot of hardcore fans probably aren't going to jump through hoops just to get it on PC. The only rationale that I can think of behind this (other than the sinister forcing of upgrades) is that Vista is supposed to have some hefty system requirements so those who can support Vista would be better able to have Halo 2 look gorgeous and run smoothly.

  8. Really? Getting your butt kicked causes you to be maladjusted? There's a shocker. I would be more interested in a question such as: Does getting your butt kicked in front of a group of people cause more maladjustment than if it happened in private (ex. just you and the bully behind the gym).

  9. I was just wondering if any more Nintendo Fun Club releases are coming.

I still have Nintendo Fun Club (Jun-Jul 1988) although the torrent for this is no longer listed anywhere. If it is reposted, I would be happy to reseed.

  10. Sorry, I tried to post this in the Emulator forum but I don't have the permissions to start new threads there.

    Anyway...

I have a ton of roms but I have been out of the emulation scene for some time. I use Nestopia 1.09 for my NES Roms and VisualBoy Advance for all GB roms. I am not sure of that is best to use for SNES roms, N64 roms, etc.

What emulators do you suggest for the various consoles and are there any websites that you recommend that I download them from? If you can't provide a URL I can just try my luck on Google.

    Thanks!

  11. I am a graduate student at Florida State University. I came across Retromags just after it's founding by Phillyman back in November of 2005 while checking out some of the offerings at various torrent sites.

I grew up with the NES and SNES and was a subscriber to Nintendo Power for several years so I was very excited to hear of this project. Every now and then I would search for Nintendo Power mags on eBay and consider buying the back issues that I got rid of many years ago. I am looking forward to getting the entire back catalog of issues online and preserving and keeping them available for other Retrogaming fanatics.

There has been a noticable trend lately toward the revival of classic games. This can be seen in Nintendo's Classic NES series for GBA and the Atari Flashback system. I expect that this trend will only strengthen in the future with the release of the Nintendo Revolution and it's virtual console function. Sure, emulators have been around for years but it is my thinking that having classic games available to mainstream consumers will be a very good thing for the retro gaming community.

That being said, the arrival of the Retromags project could not have come at a better time. There are few better sources of video game nostalgia than Nintendo Power (and other retro gaming mags). I will do what I can to support the continuation of the work at Retromags.com.

  12. You may remember that back in the day Nintendo Power used to mail promotional video tapes to subscribers to show footage of new games such as Donkey Kong Country, Starfox 64, etc. I know that these aren't magazine issues but it would be cool if they were made available online. I don't have any of these old tapes but I know that they can occasionally be found on eBay for pretty cheap and I have the equipment and know-how that would be required to convert them to Divx/Xvid for distribution via bittorrent. What does everyone think of this?

  13. I definitely like the new site. Today is the first time that I've had a chance to sit down , check it out and make some posts. I'm still figuring out the attack system but it seems like a potentially cool thing. Are there any guides available online? (Sorry if one is already posted and I missed it.)

I'm also really looking forward to getting enough posts to play in the arcade.

  14. Right now, the only systems I actually use are a GBA SP Red (with a 256m flashcart) a modded PS1 and a modded PS2. I still have my original NES, SNES, and Genesis (all original designs), and a clear GB Pocket, but they've been sitting in the closet for 3 years since it's just easier to emulate.

Yeah, I usually only use the NES to play Light Gun Games and the SNES to play Street Fighter 2 against my friends. I'd say that the N64 has been my favorite system if only for the mutiplayer fun that I had in college with Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, and Dr. Mario 64. My greatest wish is that when the Revolution comes out, they will incorporate online multiplayer capability into the N64 games.

I've always wanted a flash cart for the GBA SP but have never shelled out the bucks for one.

  15. I have the following:

    NES

    SNES

    N64

    Gamecube

Gameboy Advance SP (Pearl Blue w/Brighter Screen) **Edit 5/7/06: Traded in my Classic NES GBA SP for the one now listed that came with pack in Super Mario World :)

    Nintendo DS (Platinum)

I have always been a Nintendo loyalist and have never owned any systems by Sony, Sega, Microsoft, etc.

I do a bit of PC gaming but not much.

I also have a Coleco Telstar that runs Pong and has a built in speaker. Now THAT'S Retro! (and surprisingly fun and challenging)

  16. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to contribute scans. I will donate to the site when I am not having to sell my stuff on eBay to stay in the black.

It would be nice if there was a system set up to acknowledge uploaders as I know that I have uploaded at least 10 GB for the existing releases (My ratio for Issue 24 alone is 51.4).

  18. I came across this cool little device yesterday and I thought that you all might appreciate it. It's called the Iwod G10 Portable Media Player. In addition to playing several different types of audio (MP3, WMA, & FLAC) and video (MPEG-4 and AVI) files on the go, it has a built in NES emulator. If I could get one here in the states I would be all over this! Check it out HERE.

  19. I have stopped seeding the older individual issues in favor of seeding the full year releases. You can find these on Mininova:

    Nintendo Power 1988 CBR

    Nintendo Power 1989 CBR

These releases contain all of the older issues to which you are referring. If you only wany certain issues, most Bittorrent clients will let you specify which files within a torrent you want to download.

I will continue to seed these as well as the other releases that have not yet been incorporated into full year packs.
