  1. Grabbing the Scans off The FTP

Creating A Rar File Out Of The Scans

Renaming The file into a .cbr (following retromags standard naming convension)

Creating an .nfo file (detailing down information about the release)

Placing the .nfo and .cbr into a folder (using Retromags naming convention)

Creating a Torrent out of that folder

    Uploading the Torrent to Mininova

Messaging Phillyman the link to the release

I can help with distribution but I don't have a ton of time to devote to it. It would help if there was a way that I could be notified when an issue is uploaded to the FTP and ready for distribution. Is everything labeled as 100% in your Work In Progress thread available on the FTP?

Also, are we doing away with the editing process and just releasing raw for now?

  2. It's been a little over a year since we discussed the next generation video formats on this forum. When we last talked about it both formats had just been released and the consensus was that it's best for people to wait and see how the format war plays out.

From what I hear around the net it's looking more and more like Bluray is going to come out on top. The relevant facts are reviewed at TheDigitalBits.com in this article in which they predict that if there is a clear winner, it will be Bluray.

Personally, I would like to own an HD player but they are still too expensive for me. I'd probably go with Bluray and I might even go the PS3 route in spite of my general dislike of Sony. Ideally though, I'll wait until players hit the $200/$250 mark.

Also, I have a massive DVD collection. I am perfectly aware that the next gen video formats are backwards compatible but I find myself wondering what I'd re-buy. X2?: Definitely; Ernest Goes to Camp?: Probably not.

  3. Not sure why you picked up Jack 2 and are thinking about buying 3, but not getting the first.

I loved the original one, but the second one was not at all as good, and the 3rd one turned me off completely.

The thing is that the first one is a classic style 3D platformer, and one that's incredibly well done. While the second one pretty much dumped the pure platforming style and dove headfirst into the action/shooter genre.

The 3rd one takes this even a step further, so it's not really my thing.

I went with Jak 2 instead of 1 because I had just picked up some component video cables and wanted to test out the progressive scan function. Based on your recommendation I'll probably pick up Jak 1 before Jak 3 as I'm more a fan of classic platforming myself.

  4. I'm starting this thread to allow people to submit interesting stuff that they've found on the web for other Retromags users to see. It's kind of like Digg.com but not nearly as sophisticated.

So here's what I've found lately:

    Squid Cracker Review

This is just hilarious. It's also interesting to check out some of the other reviews (especially the asian crackers) but this one is the funniest IMHO.

    Will it blend?

This one came to my attention recently because they made a video of a guy running an iPhone through a blender. THere are videos of all kinds of crazy things being processed by a super-powerful blender. Entertainment at its finest! It would be painful to watch but I'd like to see him blend some Nintendo stuff, like an original Game Boy or a DS or an NES controller.

  5. We had a good thread going for monthly purchases in April but we failed to keep it up so I'm starting this one to catch up. So what have you gotten lately?

I got Jak II for PS2 but that's really it. I'm planning to buy Guitar Hero Encore Rocks the 80's in a week and I'm hoping that will hold me over until some of the more interesting Fall releases start coming out (Metroid Prime 3, Dewy's Adventure, Zack & Wiki, Phantom Hourglass...).

  6. R.I.P. Gameboy. I hope that Nintendo gets wise to the idea of a Gameboy compilation on the DS. How cool would it be to have about 15 or 20 first party GB titles on a DS cart?

    My list would be:

    Super Mario Land 1 & 2

    Wario Land 1, 2, & 3

    Tetris

Link's Awakening (with DX or original option)

    Kirby's Dream Land 1 & 2

    Donkey Kong

    Donkey Kong Land 1, 2, & 3

    Pokemon Red/Blue

    Pokemon Gold/Silver

    Alleyway

    Solar Striker

A compilation like that could provide tons of retro handheld fun.

  7. It might actually be cool to see a compilation of classic board games on the Wii. Something like Clubhouse Games could really be fun if implemented with online connectivity, good AI, and interesting use of the Wii remote (motion controlled die toss!!!). There's no way I'd fork out $40-50 for Wii Jenga though.

  8. Well, I finally broke down the barrier of my Nintendo fanboyism recently and got a PS2. The decision was spurred by Guitar Hero 1 and 2 as well as Katamari Damacy. In addition to those games I also picked up Jak II. Does anyone have other recommendations for must have PS2 games? I'm considering checking out Final Fantasy X, Jak 3 (after I finish Jak II), Ratchet and Clank, and Kingdom Hearts. I'm not really into FPS or sports games but a good racing game might be fun.

  9. I voted GamePro. I'd like to see the missing NP stuff released but I'm pretty satisfied with what we have so far. We're also facing increasing competition from independent scanners releasing material at google as evidenced by the release of GamePro 1997 there on 7/3.

  10. Those look interesting. They must have been released alongside NP rather than before since Dr. Mario, SMB3, and the Power Glove all came out after NP was officially started. Still, they look cool and publications from that time span are pretty hard to find. I'm looking forward to seeing them scanned and distributed. :)

  11. there is also something that Pre-dated the Fun Club issues, I believe it was power flash magazine or something simular. Once I get those issues aquired I will release a final Fun club torrent :D

Wow, I had no idea that there were any pre-fun club publications. I'd love to see that!

  12. 4 Distributors

Retromags needs 4 people that have a working knowledge of how to create torrents and have a decent upload ISP speed. Working knowlege and access to Newsgroups is a plus. Also a understanding of Rapidshare is a plus. Needs to be able to create at least one (1) new release per week, and ability to seed that release for 1 week.

    Duties

[*]Grab Edited Scans from FTP each week

[*]Create NFO File for each magazine

[*]Release at least 1 magazine per week

[*]Seed Torrent for at least 1 week

    [*]Upload Magazine to Rapidshare

    [*]Upload Magazine to Newsgroups (optional)

    [*]Keep Release Section Updated

I guess that if there are any of these that I would qualify for it would be Distributor. I have a decent ISP upload speed (90 kB/s up), I have experience creating NFO files, and I know how to create torrents. The things that I don't know include using Newsgroups and Rapidshare.

  13. Every 50 Issues will be released out as a Near Final Torrent. So the final 3 torrents will be

    Nintendo Power Issues 001-050

    Nintendo Power Issues 051-100

    Nintendo Power Issues 101-150

    Nintendo Power Issues 151

    Nintendo Power Issues 152

    Nintendo Power Issues 153

    Nintendo Power Issues 154

    Nintendo Power Issues 155

    Nintendo Power Issues 156

    Nintendo Power Issues 157

Cool. I'm still seeding the large torrent (with some of the fun club issues, NP issues 1-45, and some supplements but a lot of missing stuff) and I've been hoping for a more organized re-release so that I can let that one die off. I've uploaded a total of 168 GB on that one. That's in addition to the 190 GB uploaded on the 1988-1998 yearly sets. My uTorrent window is getting cluttered.

Also, It would be nice if we could get a golden torrent on google. :) Not only is it prestigious but golden torrents tent to be much more likely to survive and be well seeded.

  14. That reminds me, don't bother trying new Miller Chill if it's available in your area. It's awful stuff that doesn't even taste like beer. If you like those fruity tasting malt beverages then you might enjoy it but if you are looking for a good new beer, look elsewhere.

  15. Recent reports have indicated that Michael may not be returning after all as actor Harold Perrineau has turned down an offer to return in this season's finale. I guess that he could change his mind eventually but I'm no longer getting my hopes up about seeing more of Michael (with the exception of it possibly being addressed by other characters).

There are a lot of lingering mysteries from season one that still haven't been addressed or have been completely ignored and that bugs me:

Did Walt really have any powers?

What happened to Jack's dad's body?

    What's with the polar bears?

Why did people hear mysterious whispering in the jungle?

What is the real significance of the numbers (if any)?

    What's Rousseau's back story?

Where is the radio transmitter that was sending out the numbers and then Rousseau's distress call?

Who were Adam and Eve (the skeletons found in the caves)?

How did the Black Rock end up in the middle of the jungle?

And of course, what is the true nature of the smoke monster?

They have been introducing so many new mysteries involving The Others and Desmond that it really makes me wonder if any of those early mysteries will be addressed. I get the feeling that we'll at least get some answers on May 9th when they do the Ben back story episode.
