No, datfiles aren't link containers. They can be used to check downloaded files integrity btw.

You just need to hash the files with a tool like DatUtil, then host the resulting datfile on the site. Everytime a new mag is added/updated you update the datfile is updated too. Datfiles are useful for keeping a consistent naming scheme too.

Datfiles aren't only for ROM dumps. For example take a look at EmuConnie Nintendo VIP Goodies (20090505) CM DAT It's a technique for keeping a collection of files synchronized between users.

Since scans is updated sometimes, i think would be useful having a ClrMame datfile so everyone can check her/his collection.
