How would you rate the video output and to what kind of TV? I'm less concerned about graphics or resolution than I am lag and slowdown.
-
The joystick gets good reviews. The video out of the shell not so much. I'd prefer to use that over the handheld so I don't know if it's worth the price or I just stick with emulation. Can keep watching for a good Ebay deal, however unlikely as the games cost a ton too. From what I pieced together the MVS is the arcade hardware fresh out of a cabinet. The AES is the hardware in a console model for home use, the one the X is designed after. They use similar games but need a converter.
-
Yeah. 2D fighters were too reliant on combos and memorization so I barely played any of them. I'd want one for things like Sonic Wings/Aero Fighters, Metal Slug, the sidescrollers, etc. Enough of them are there to make me want the hardware. Just not enough to warrant a several hundred dollar hardware purchase (still that expensive after all these years) plus a hundred or more per game. Not to mention I never quite understood WHAT to get, being there's an MVS, AES, JP and US units, a CD based model, and no guide to tell me if they have different libraries. The X is reasonably priced, but I don't know if those games will release. Haven't seen info on how it can be hacked. I'd gladly buy the games that see release, ROM's would be a backup plan. Although I did have one good idea. Since I have a MAME machine with several of these games I wonder if it would be worth getting the X to enjoy what I can, then use the new model NG joystick which I read is now USB on my PC. Skip the hacking yet keep my backup plan. Should probably start looking for info...

I think the price people are willing to pay on Ebay is more for the rare collectible than something that will see a lot of use. I don't buy much from PSN because I don't like spending more than $5 or $10 on something without a case or manual but would greatly prefer they focus on new content over producing tons of ports. Some guaranteed hits like MGS or FF7 would make more sense, Suikoden was kinda a niche title. We've little reason to expect them to go all digital anytime soon, there are a lot of issues to solve first. However this may be their solution for BC, to emulate the games rather than provide the proper chips now then remove them later to reduce costs.

I'm interested because a real NG plus games is a bit expensive to add to my collection. But I would need more info on potential future games. I'd want more action and shmups; Never was big on fighting games.

Transcribers needed? + Database discussion

That link works. How up to date are those lists? At first I was going to say I've a lot that isn't scanned, a couple early Game Players, all of PSM past issue 11, and I think I had some Dreamcast mags, but then thought they might not be there because of your '99 cutoff if that's still in effect. -

Dammit! I have April 94 and July 94. So close. I never had a sub, instead a friend gave me a few stacks when he was cleaning out. Have plenty of later ones though. *Well that's weird. I wanted to see what mags you might have been missing but the games, mags, and guides tabs at the top don't work. The page doesn't change. The gallery, forums, and other tabs are fine though. -

That's a first. Does it count as a double post if it's IN the same post? Lol. -
PSM was my fave mag next to Game Players. The writers were comical. Unfortunately I subbed around issue 14 and managed to get 11-13. Never seen the first 10 issues otherwise I too would have 'em all.

That only solves the issue where your hardware is disabled. There are still many more issues this patent ignores. The used market is never going anywhere. For some it's the only way to acquire goods, especially when retail price creeps higher and higher. Sure I buy many games new thanks to B2G1 sales, Amazon markdowns, coupons, black Friday deals, and so on. I never pay retail price, I wait for price drops. But I also buy plenty used when the price is right. Hell there's a number of games I got solely because they looked ok and I needed a second/third game to take advantage of the sale. Things like Alice, Killzone 2, the first AssCreed, Medal of Honor, or Mirror's Edge. The developers got their money from the first sale and found a new customer for later. I too never trade in but would be extremely disappointed to know they have zero value in the future. It's also very unlikely you'll find that many 'new' games 20 years from now. At least not at prices I'd be willing to pay. Speaking of which any game that is old enough to be out of print you're just paying the collector's inflated price. None of that goes to the dev. Exactly. PC piracy prevention proved you'll make more money with less protection. It won't stop pirates, they'll find a workaround. Meanwhile the more invasive protection becomes, the more likely people such as myself will get fed up and go elsewhere. We see that piracy didn't slow down the Wii or DS. Hackers aren't going to suddenly start buying games so what do companies stand to gain with these schemes? Screw the shareholders. They'll be happier when they see thrilled and returning customers than they would be knowing a game is overprotected and sitting on shelves.

Put me in the boat with Areala. Companies do patent things more often than they make use of them. Luckily enough for us. They all have to realize that as much as they want to limit secondhand sales this will do FAR more harm than good. The PC market is a great example of how protection schemes do little to those it intends to stop and merely turns legit customers away. I gave up PC gaming once I saw what Steam does to your PC, and other malware and DRM sealed the deal. If your console breaks, if you need to share with a family member, if you want to rent games, then you're out of luck. Cutting used games will destroy sales as people won't trade things into GS and won't be using credit for new games, plus without GS there goes a major retailer. What if it's a niche title and you can't find a new copy? What if you go back to collect old games in the future? The fact the 'feature' is there will encourage hacking and we know how that goes. You'd think companies would keep it simple to keep customers happy and reduce the need or desire to hack. Not being future proof is a big reason why I prefer disc games over digital. I guess it wouldn't hugely affect me as I wait until games drop into the $30 range regardless if they're new or used. It's the principle of the thing that would make me say "no, this is enough". With my collection I could easily not buy another platform after the U and keep myself busy with the classics I've gathered over the years. I guess in a very slight way a crash would be good news as I could then finish my backlog then go back to all the PS1 games I've wanted to replay.

Retromags 2.0 arrives in 2013! - Now 100% FUNDED!

I'd have to see the new logo before agreeing. The current one works well, it's colorful and retro but without looking very dated. Maybe it's the font. What happens if I like the old logo but still want a new darker theme? -

I think the current look is fine as far as being organized so hopefully the forum doesn't change too much. Although I assume most of your changes are going to be on other sections. Yeah if it can support several skins then give us a few options if it's not too much trouble. I've been using the dark theme on A@H since who knows when just because it's the easiest to view. I know you probably want to avoid being all gray but don't know what you consider pleasant. I wish we could customize them on their own without having to bug the admins. Many sites I frequent have a gray/black/aqua theme (like G4 or the very top of this site) that works well. Once I scroll down into the white and baby blue it's time for the sunglasses. Don't change the logo though. That's perfect as-is. -

Yeah yeah, everyone says they are messing around until I come back to the site and can't find my account... Will they be custom skins or an assortment of themes installed by the forum software? I mean I don't know how flexible the software is and other than turning off the white space I kinda like to change colors around once in a while as I do with my Win backgrounds. It's good news either way, can't wait to see what the results will be. -

Hey, can't we talk a little even if it's a side topic? If I could make one little request, the site could benefit from a theme with a bit less 'white' in it. Blacks and grays are easier to read throughout the day, then throw some colors along the borders to brighten things up. I read a smart comment elsewhere online - staring at a white background is like staring at a light bulb. -

Ah. Okies. Now might be a good time to mention I don't really watch movies. Some of the folks that know me from other forums might have heard this before. I haven't been in a theater since 1999 and the last 3 movies I've seen, in order, would be The Matrix (theater), The Simpsons Movie (gift), and Jackass 3D (borrowed during a power outage). I spend too much time playing games other than working or being online. Might have seen Goldeneye on TV but otherwise this explains why I wouldn't get the reference. -
The Final Nintendo Power Cover is Awesomely Nostalgic
DPsx7 replied to Phillyman's topic in Magazine Talk
Ya know, while I like physical mags I gotta admit I was running out of boxes to put them in. Hard to say if I'd actually sign up for another. Can't bring myself to throw them away, nor do I want to search for everything online. -

Ok I get the first one. Not the second... -
DP is fine, it doesn't mean what most of the internet thinks it means. Ha. The name predates much of the craziness. Weird stuff but I've seen numerous carts appearing online that clearly aren't official. There was this one site I came across some time ago offering to place ROM's of homebrew or translated JP games onto carts as long as you supplied a proper donor. I might still have the linky... Yup. http://nesreproductions.com/ That's the only reason I can think of for a price increase on so common a game. Leave it to the internet to manage to raise the price on it...
-
That is kinda weird. That was a pack-in along with the triple pack I have which is Mario/Duck/Track Meet. I wonder if they're being used as donor carts for repros.

The Final Nintendo Power Cover is Awesomely Nostalgic
DPsx7 replied to Phillyman's topic in Magazine Talk
Huh, news to me. I'd have to see a copy and the physical price before saying this is good or bad. I lost both NP and PTOM, leaving me with only GI which feels a little too '360 heavy' for my tastes. -

The idea wasn't about the most recent years, but as many mags as you can get a hold of before some clown decides to double their prices for discontinued products. -
Well I have some large sets of over 100 games and I made the effort to play most if not all. Always say I won't buy a game if I don't intend to play it. Usually games bought late and used get pushed aside for the next gen, or if I find good sales on Ebay with the intent to go back to the SNES, PS1, or whatever someday. Going for pure numbers means buying all those crap sports, MMO, RTS, lame licensed sidescrollers, or sim games. If people wanna collect that stuff then fine, I'll just have to let them own bigger collections. Considering how much I own and have played I think I 'win' overall. Ha. I'll admit at times I feel like I buy more than I could ever finish. Too many good sales offer lots of good looking games, and often I'll be surprised at something unknown. Yet as I look at a backlog of 100+ games between the PS3, Wii, DS, 3DS, and Vita, then to throw a U on top of that with Mario, I dunno if I'm more into playing games or shopping for sales. I've finished 5 games since mid Nov when I usually start my holiday gaming season. Sucks that I bought 5 games around black Friday, 4 more used from GS's sales, and then 2 more that were marked down recently. Giving up RPG's didn't seem to help.
-
I'm up to 4 myself (18 gal I think), but many games aren't in tubs. Those 4 are just for NES, random accessories, PS2, and the last for the GC and PSP with some room to spare. I've got shoeboxes, Snapple boxes, normal boxes, boxes in boxes... The problem with full sets is all the crappy games. Out of date sports games and weak cartoon-based games mainly. Although since seeing this I've gotten the urge to add a couple more games to the collection. Not that I need them as I have an impossible backlog on current hardware already.

Used Legend of Zelda Cartridge for $10000
DPsx7 replied to Phillyman's topic in Buying, Selling, Trading
That's interesting because I haven't seen a game without the 'made in Japan' on the bottom. Other listings show alternate labels with the seal either in the bottom middle or over in the lower right.
