I think I understand what you're getting at and sympathize with you, though. When I was a kid all I could think about when I went to a mall or store was getting my hands on the arcade machines. My favorites to find were always The Simpsons, X-Men and Ninja Turtles(yes, the mindless beat-em-ups!). Of course there were other off-beat titles here and there but I was a fan of both the mentioned TV shows and loved being able to play as my favorite characters.

Not until recently on MAME did I get into things like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and Joust. Of course I didn't find much of an outlet between friends and others to compete with for high scores on or offline.

Anyhow, like Magik said, a big part of playing those games back then was the experience. A seedy discount movie theater, with its sticky 80s print carpet floor, popcorn smell and sticky control panels, or the local arcade where all the machines had their own little quirks and you had to play accordingly. It really is a bygone era that I often think back to. I really wish I could open my own arcade and just do it myself. I still find a few places here and there that have that same feeling, but they're few and far-between and generally don't stay in business long enough for me to keep them afloat with my quarters.

These past few months I've been frequenting laundromats. Yes, laundromats. Not actually for getting my clothes clean, but for the games I find. A place close by has a speed-hack Ms. Pac-Man that runs perfect and Bust-a-Move, while another has a fun pinball game, Junkyard, that I really enjoy trying to master. Bowling alleys are also a good spot if you can find one with a decent selection of games.

I wish they'd never shut down my local Chuck E. Cheese(actually it was a Showbiz Pizza- much better). Now THAT was the place to be. So many good arcade and ticket machines. Ski-ball, bop-em games, dance-type games, clown shooter, all the best ticket pumping games. Their arcade game selection was great too with things like Hogan's Alley and Karate Champ(with the two joysticks). They also kept their games in rotation, when one would go back or need repair they'd bring in a new one.

Man, the 80s and 90's were a great time for arcades. If you look hard enough you can still find the ghosts of these places we remember.

but that's why i'm not here, i couldn't agree more. the only places where you can find classic cabinet arcade games is at your local laundry mat and i feel sorry for them [ROFL they're people too, well created by real people who inspired Video Games] the cabinet i see at the "clothes cleaning places" get abused, spray painted with profanity and gangster shit, gum sticking on the side of the cabinet, player 1's controllers aren't working but the start button is, player 2's coin slot is not lit, player 3 and 4's token slots are jammed because someone jammed in a quater when it says "TOKENS ONLY"

they don't deserve this kind of respect. but now that i have a job maybe i could the money to start a collection. since members here in Retromags collect magazines, i thought off going outside the box literally. Since i don't have a working scanner and an online account to buy magazines, i might as well just do the closest thing to help out my video game community. and the closest i can get to are the old Arcade Cabinets. sounds expensive and crazy but i want to make the save.

I wish to see this day happen again, but Arcades are ancient lost cities like Atlantis, the Egyptian Temples, and the Roman Parthenon. I remember spending $5 to $10 to $20 on something called "Tokens" for those of you younger people if there has been any that has join because i have a feel i'm no longer the youngest person in Retromags anymore. Now token money can buy you a video game at gamestop that cost $5 sometimes $10 or $20 because of

1. its popularity

2. its a trade

3. poor video in bad condition

$5 worth of tokens could not get you that far but it was fun, really truly fun to experience the smell of popcorn, sticky gum, and candy filled in the air at the arcades. $10 worth of tokens could probably get you 1 ride, 3 rounds of the Simpsons 4player game, 1 Terminator FPS and maybe also 1 game of Aliens vs. Predator. $15 could get you 5 tries in Street Fighter II Turbo, my favorite hit the crocodile game and the fireman game, and that ball you throw that has 5 different rings around it that has like points ranging from 5 - 100.

after you played a couple of games you get tickets and trade them for prizes. now that shit, that shit folks was rewarding. see how times have change. i'm talking in a philosophical and political way of video games.

now after you've just beaten Halo Reach you just realize you spent $200 on the special Xbox 360 edition, you think the ending sucks, and now you can play online with your friends. the video games today doesn't reward you with something tangible or something that you can physically touch like a prize in exchange for tickets. no matter how lame those prizes were, it was something to keep for years, and use to keep them but then i lost those prizes. i remember in the 1990s a rice cooker was one of the expensive prizes you needed at least 200 worth of tickets which is like $20 bucks of your money. a gameboy was also there on the shelves, which i thought was unique because why spend $60 on buying the original gameboy when you can collect as many tickets in exchange for it buy only spending $20 worth of tokens. this was in the 90s.

but now what does Master Chief or Nobel Soldier give you in return, 48 hours of gameplay which leads to eye strains and headache, which you now have to call in from work because of your symptoms, yet you go back to playing some more online action, an ending you can always play over and over again, lame achievements you can't even put in your resume, and really i've seen some people put their PS3 and Xbox achievements on their resume. World of Warcraft, WoW players, but what are you looking for? the close you get to finishing the expansion, already a new one has been released. so now that makes it 3 expansions you have to play through Burning Crusade > Wrath of the Lich King > Cataclysm. and you know what more eye strains, 72 hours of online gameplay, lose real life friends and family members because they don't want to deal with your bullshit addiction, but then you get virtual friends by joining something called a "guild", you now have 10 more levels to reach, buy more epic armor, and farm for more gold, you just got laid off from your job because you haven't been coming to work, you forgot to eat and now after you're done reading my blog your in the hospital reading this blog from your iphone, blackberry messenger, or from your "smart phone" which is actually smarter than you.

I know this is off topic but i feel disrespected by the younger generation they don't know what a NES or Famicom is not even a Super Nintendo as earliest as possibly not even oh my the original PSX. Sometimes i even disrespectful by the game creators who brought us our classics because they bring them back to this era and sometimes they rise back up after so many years then quickly fall right back down. There are some good titles that were brought back from the past and have caught up with us like the return of Starcraft 1997 or 1995 or Kid Icarus and Kirby and Twisted Metal not to say the least anyone else i've left out. But kids don't know the "origins" of where it came from and when it came into the video game world. They only know it as "Part 4" or the "last trilogy" they don't know the Introduction Part 1, Part 2, or Part 3.

Hey the funny thing about all this talk about "old school generation" just when we thought we've seen the last of it after 2001, 9 years later its coming back.

PS2 is one of the most lukewarm systems I own. It's got some fun games, but altogether it didn't stand out or even make me as happy as the PS1 did. But of course, even the great PS1 pales in comparison to my SNES or Genesis.

i agree with your statement, PS2 wasn't much of an impact. Sony fans were still stuck and well attached to their PSX that i myself became one with my Playstation One, 1, PSX. PS2 was like a roadblock, something to keep us busy so Sony could work on the PS3. I imagine it went like this "here's something to give our fans busy in the meantime while we come up with something new".

I wasn't too fond of the PS2 i believe it was just a "distraction" or "side track" to lure fans away from what to ultimately expect from the PS3, i believe, in my opinion, that Sony used the PS2 to lure their fans money so they can use that to create the PS3.

Random battles!!!! Just where the hell are these minions coming from?! They're endless AND invisible?! Not to mention they happen every few seconds on every world map of numerous RPGs. Only now is it becoming the trend to ACTUALLY SHOW THE DAMN ENEMIES so you can choose to fight or get the hell away from them. I ONLY WANTED TO PROGRESS THE STORY!

Everyone should have taken example from Chrono Trigger and Earthbound, games which showed the enemies coming up to you. At least it's less annoying that way and you'll know you're about to fight a piece of crap enemy before heading into that final dungeon to finish the game!

And Super Mario RPG and other's that i know are out there.

I'm pretty sure everyone has a OCD when it comes to playing your favorite game or do you have a pet peeve you would like to share? I'll start off by sharing some of my pet peeves as I recollect from my memories.

• Mega Man

Invincibility Mode.. for 3 seconds. What sucks about this is, yes it can help you get pass the spiky walls and enemies that can do heavy damage but the one thing that sucks is it does take alot of damage along with it.

Toad Man - Can't stand this boss, because all he does is just back and forth attacking you from left and right, when your out of pattern he starts doing some crazy ass shit.

Blue Bot can't duck! - Sure he leaps from buildings, defeats robots, obtains new abilities, gets his configuration molested by a dirty old white man, saves the day but there's one thing he can't do. HE CAN'T FREAGIN DUCK! Not until the X4 Series, only 20XX Years later, Capcom decided to give Mega Man kneecaps so he can duck!

• Tomb Raider for the PSX

Camera Work - The first i played this game was when i was trying to reach the cave at the very beginning of the game but in order to do that you would need to wall kick and then do some flip just to get reach to the top.

What makes it worst is that the camera isn't helping it all! Just like in Spyro the Dragon.

Camera Work Worst - Overall the camera work in this game makes me dizzy i wanted to throw up.

What pissed me off was when i bought my first 120 GB PS3 last year, the next following week they came out with the PS3 Slim with the same amount of GB, WTF?! and it also came with a smaller price tag! Double WTF?! WTF?! So it went from a George Foreman Grill to one of those binders from the 90s i forgot what was the name of it but if you had it with you in school, you were like the coolest kid in the class.

Hideo Kokima Ends the Saga - When i heard MGS4 would be last of Solid Snake, i went into to total depression, flashback memories of when i was a kid back in the 91 or 92 when i first met Solid Snake on the NES were hitting in my head. The first Video Game console i actually had was the NES but the first VG Console i bought with my mom at that time because i was still young, was actually the PSX, my parents bought both the NES and SNES but i don't remember me being there at the store with them to buy it.

The bad thing is I didn't even listen to myself. I kept saying I'm not going to buy it, I'm not going to buy it. Then a week before or so before release ok I'm going to buy it. 2 weeks after it's release Ok I'm going to sell it. I do that all the time with the GTA games as well. Except I keep those longer than 2 weeks. Final Fantasy 12 I only rented.

Don't be mad at yourself, i was having high hopes for FFXIII too, but it didn't live up to any FF Fans expectations. For the first time EVEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR in history, i had to turn down a Final Fantasy Game, and i was sad that i felt that way when i played the first few minutes of FFXIII, yes minutes not. the first 3 minutes i was already saying "your going back to Gamestop"

Ok I give up! I'm done with FFXIII I'm taking it in to Game Stop today to sell it and put that money down on a good game.

When it feels like a chore to play a video game it's not worth it.

I told you so and you didn't want to believe us, now you spent your money on something worthless and meaning less a game without emotion, i don't blame you because i did the same and refunded it at my local Game Stop, What did I tell ya?

It's not worth your time. its like the game was just thrown in together without any love in it or capturing emotions. And really when you ask people that cook your food for you, you ask them "what's in this recipe that makes it so good?" and they say "It's the love" really it really is the love that they put into it.

but with FFXIII i didn't feel any love, nor attention compared to previous FF titles.

ROFL It looks like a NES character like that blue blob in not boy and his blob but i think the one from SNES. You could see its red eyes and black D-Pad looking like ears.

You know what's so bad about this game, everything, and since it didn't capture my attention for the first 4 hours, i just put down the controller, turned off my PS3 and didn't want to continue. as a matter of fact, when i first played the game i was waiting for the old "Final Fantasy Main Theme" to be playing just like all the other Series, but you know what? it didn't play it played something else!

O-M-G i only got like 4 hours into the game were after fighting the first Fal'Cie whatever the hell their called, i'm now in a place where everything is frozen and there finding their way, and i'm already getting impatient seeing where the storyline gets interesting, for me, the storyline isn't getting interesting.

for the first time ever, this is the First Final Fantasy game i don't want to continue playing. I've dealt with Final Fantasy X, that was the first FF game i wasn't too sure about but just kept on playing even though i didn't do much but just straight forward get to the end.

Final Fantasy X-2, never tried it, didn't want to give it a try, so i didn't bother because it was like some product made just for Anime fans right after FFX instantly made fans saw that Tidus and Yuna made a cute couple and starting putting shit like this > "Tidus and Yuna make a very cute couple than Cloud and Tifa kekekeke ^_^"

Final Fantasy Online i don't even know what number that is, i didn't even want to bother touching it, never took a look at it as a matter of fact, it made me go to WoW instead of going to it.

Final Fantasy XII, was decent, what i liked about it, no love storyline, it was about war, but it didn't feel like Final Fantasy anymore, felt more like some political warfare game like if Call of Duty was to go RPG it would look like this.

And Finally, [no cliche intended], Final Fantasy XIII, your a huge disappointment, i thought you were gonna save us and bring back "Old School" Final Fantasy but nah, you did brought back the mushy love storyline but that didn't do justice.

Lets see what Final Fantasy versus will bring to the table.

The genre is starting to remind me of Pokemon, it first had pokemon battle games, now pokemon party games. When it comes to old school fans vs. new school fans it reminds me of Old ECW vs. WWE's ECW.
