Game On! Issue 2

ISSUE: 2Content

Features:

  • From the Editor - Future Game Designers, Unite! (Editor Jason Thompson discusses how ideas for game design provide fantastic creative outlets for younger children)
  • Virtual Combat (Sega and Namco are neck-and-tech in the race to make the next big thing in polygon fighters with Virtua Fighter 3 squaring off against Tekken 3)
  • Out of the Arcades (Is the pen mightier than the polygon? You might think so to see all these game-inspired manga!)
  • New to the Arena (Interview with Dave Hoffman, the producer of Battle Arena Toshinden 2 for its US release)
  • Newsline (From Nights to Tokyo Highway Battle, Last Bronx to Virtua Fighter Kids, the world of Japanese gaming keeps getting bigger and bigger)
  • Making Converts - Following Games from Japan to the U.S. (What it takes to translate and transport a game from Japan to the States...and what often gets left behind)
  • Manga - Super Street Fighter II: Cammy (Part 1 of the second installment of Cammy's adventures with Major Guile)
  • Manga - Samurai Shodown (Can Haohmaru and Nakoruru handle the fight coming their way when a mysterious ninja dies, leaving behind a scroll with major political implications?)
  • Game Over: Three ROM Blondes (Three otaku debate the outcome of a fight between Virtua Fighter's Sarah, Tekken's Nina Williams, and Toshinden's Sophia)
  • Upcoming (The next issue features SNK: The Art of Gaming, Tekken 3, and more Samurai Shodown and Super Street Fighter II: Cammy manga!)

Play Tests (Reviews):

  • Resident Evil (PS1)
  • X-Men: Children of the Atom (SAT)
  • Project Horned Owl (PS1)
  • Tales of Phantasia (SNES)

Notable Stuff:

  • Sega allowed fans to determine who won the first Virtua Fighter tournament by holding an actual tournament and crowning the character used by the winning player as the victor in the game's storyline!
  • Gotta agree with Dave Hoffman, Sony's packaging for the first Battle Arena Toshinden on the PS1 was pathetic.
  • Capcom sued Data East in 1993 over Data East's release of Fighter's History, a 2D fighter which Capcom claimed infringed on their Street Fighter II property. Capcom lost for a number of reasons, not least of which was Data East pulling out the fact that their own Karate Champ predated Street Fighter in the arcades by three years. Fatality!
  • 16-bit RPGs still reign supreme in Japan, with Bahamut Lagoon outselling everything else in May of 1996.
  • The "Making Converts" feature is a great read for anyone wondering why stuff gets censored, toned down, and cut completely from Japanese releases.
  • Manga accounts for another 56 pages of content in this issue.
  • The reviewers don't use a number system, star system, or any other rating metric for games.
  • Again, Game Over would be more compelling if they actually came to a consensus on who would win...
