Is The Snes As Good As It Gets?

My daily traversals into digg.com pulled this link up, debating whether for various reasons, the SNES was the best console that there's ever been (and apparently ever will be!)

Being this a "retromags" forum and place, I have a feeling I'll see some agreement. I could likely counter-argue that the Dreamcast was better but I know I would lose on two accounts: the controller and the lack of RPG's.

So without further adieu .... let's get it on!

I'd agree that some of the games on the SNES were the best I've ever played. My favorite zelda game is LTTP, my favorite metroid is Super Metroid, and of course, the SNES was the home of the last great all 2D platformers. But the Revolution will allow players to experience games from all of nintendo's systems so if we're going for all time coolest system, it would absorb the coolness of all prior systems. There are a lot of details yet to be released though so we'll see.

I think that there are also some great things to be said for the N64 but being a transition system (2D to 3D) the games often lacked the refinement and complexity of the more polished SNES games.

The SNES was a great console with some great games. But IMO the NES was the best one, why? Because no one held the market like the NES, no one made so much licensed merchandise like the NES. The NES had cartoons on TV, even breakfast cereal. The NES totally changed the way we played games, it was the biggest jump from Atari. The controller laid the model for the future consoles. Maybe SNES games were better. But nothing sold like the NES. But I do think that after the SNES playing games was not the same. The N64 didn't even come close.

I say this as a gamer with far too many titles and systems around the spacious Villa of ZTT to actually play.

I could never play favorites because every system here be it real or emulated is like one of my children (Horribly mishapen children that are plugged into surge protectors and have joysticks coming out of them) and stopping to pick just one seems pointless.

As far as I'm concerned, if you took your hard earned cash to purchase a console it has to have some kind of redeeming value.

From the NES, to the SNES to the GBs (and As). From Neo Geo Pockets (color & B&W) to the 400 pound Microsoft gorilla to the over hyped PS2 (PS-X is still the better of the two!) down to both sets of Sega Saturns and Dreamcasts! I love them all!!!!

Yes even my Atari Jaguar deserves love, despite the world's oddest controller.
