The Wii Launch Date: My Theory

As you are probably aware, Nintendo has not yet officially announced the launch date for their Wii console. Last week however, they issued a press release containing the following sentence in the opening paragraph: "Perhaps the secret to the launch information for Wii is somehow encoded in the text of this news item."

The release didn't contain any clear clues but after an announcement today I have a theory.

Today Nintendo announced that they will be offering consumers a chance to try out the Wii before it's release at the Nintendo Fusion Tour. The tour ends on November 11th. This made me think that the Wii launch date is probably after November 11th.

So I went back to the first press release and found this sentence: "As series go, FINAL FANTASY is to video games what James Bond is to movies." It seems like an odd statement. Then I remembered that there's a new Bond film coming out this year, and the release date is....November 17th.

So that's my theory, that the Wii launch date will be November 17th.

Actually, that's the SAME date as Sony's release of the PS3. If the date is accurate (which it may not be), then Nintendo could be banking on consumers having to purchase either one system or the other and deciding that the Wii is a better value. With the PS3 likely costing 2.5 to 3 times as much as the Wii, I'd say that's a gamble that Nintendo can afford to take, especially given people's reactions at E3. Remember that video of all of the people rushing past Sony's booth to get to Nintendo's?

I was just looking around online and found an article that offers another theory. It can be found HERE.

The article suggests that the launch date is likely to be October 2nd. One of the more interesting pieces of supporting evidence listed for this date is that Walmart.com has listed several Wii launch titles with an October 2nd release date.

Also interesting in this article is an independent arrival at the same James Bond theory that I arrived at before reading the article.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for 10/2 but I'm not going to get my hopes up just yet.

i think the comparison to james bond was merely to show that final fantasy series will keep on going after even several new releases. its not limited to a trilogy type release like most movies are

i think the real clue in the article is the release date of legend of zelda which will be on....
