  1. This is the first time I've ever heard of a console called CD 32. I played one game on the 3DO and one on the Jaguar, and based on what limited experience I have with those consoles, I'd say I'm slightly more inclined to favour the 3DO. The Jag has Alien Vs Predator, which was a really great Doom clone at the time. Come to think of it, I don't remember playing any other Jag games besides AvP. I played Road Rash for the 3DO and really enjoyed it. Not only is the game fun, but it got me hooked on Soundgarden! Anyway, I favour the 3DO over the Jag since it features ports of a lot of other games I enjoy, such as Samurai Shodown and Street Fighter. The fact that my local video game joint had a copy of a pornographic vampire game for the 3DO is all kinds of awesome, and a memory I may never forget.
  2. I have the 1st Manhunt and agree with what you said about the game. If ANY mass-marketed video game deserved an AO rating, it was Manhunt. Granted, the GTA games let you carry out all sorts of socially irresponsible behaviour that would be HORRIBLE if carried out in real life, but at least the world depicted in the GTA series is very exaggerated (everyone is a walking stereotype).
  3. I saw the aforementioned vampire porn title for rent at my local Microplay rental joint circa 1996. I was curious, but the fact that I didn't have a 3DO influenced my decision to avoid renting it. Otherwise, I would've tried it out.
  4. If you are a fan of oldschool Nintendo, you should DEFINITELY check it out. I'd pay up to $10 for a complete copy of it (the instruction booket is nice, elaborating on the Greek mythology rampant throughout the game)
  5. Will the game go by a different name when it is released in North America? Also, what is meant by the term 'Wii Ware'? Does that mean the game will be sold on optical media, or that it will only be available for purchase over Nintendo's online network? If I had a Wii, this would be the first game I'd get for the console.
  6. That game looks great! Thanks for informing me about it
  7. As the Mortal Kombat with one sequel after another, what do you think about the changes that were made? I feel that MK2 was the pinnacle of the series. MK2 played well (in 2-player mode, anyway. MK AI was always incredible cheap!), and had great atmosphere. Although I like how MK3 incorporated a 'run' button into the series, I didn't like MK3 nearly as much as MK2 because it looked drab (it was set in barren city locations instead of the outterworld) and too many key characters were absent. MK4 felt like a 3D remake of MK3. MK4 watered down the MK3's gameplay mechanics and felt oversimplified. Its main draw was its 3D graphics and the Outworld-ish battle locations (in other words, it undid what MK3 did in terms of promoting atmosphere). I don't care much for every 3D MK since MK4. Why? They no longer play like MK games. Every fighter has a completely different moveset, which is good for variety but terrible for remembering what button to press if you want to execute punches, kicks, etc. Furthermore, I dislike how jump attacks became seriously de-emphasized in every 3D MK since MK4.
  8. Wow, I didn't know there was a new A Boy & His Blob game!
  9. I think most of the fuss came from ignorant demagogue Joe Lieberman falsely alleging that the game allows kids to control vampires who rape women and drink their blood while leaving them hanging from meat hooks (all in vivid, life-like graphics). The truth is that if Night Trap were published as a standard movie rather than as an FMV-style video game, it would have a hard time getting anything worse than a PG rating. The game was vilified by those who had never actually played it.
  10. I must say that Kid Icarus has always been one of my favourite games for the original Nintendo. I think it's a shame that there hasn't been a Kid Icarus sequel since Pit appeared on the original Gameboy. Nintendo seems to remember Kid Icarus to the extent that they incorporate Pit into Super Smash Bros games, but why not develop a new game for him? I'd rather see a new Kid Icarus game than another Donkey Kong game!
  11. I think there's something charming about the original's graphics
  12. Are there any games you'll watch others play without playing yourself? I can say this is true about myself with respect to Metal Gear Solid. I find MGS too difficult to control for me to play for extended sessions. In particular, I cannot get Snake to snap the necks of foes. Because my peers are able to do this, I enjoy watching them play MGS rather than playing it myself.
  13. First, I'd just like to say that the distinction between mature-rated games and AO-rated games is terribly vague. How Manhunt could get away with an M-rating whereas one LOCKED AWAY sex minigame got GTA: San Andreas an AO-rating is unnerving. ANYWAY, have you ever seen (or perhaps bought) any CONSOLE (not PC) games bearing the AO rating? Let's keep this restricted to console games since the PC market is more open (Vivendi Universal couldn't get an AO-rated Leisure Suit Larry published on consoles, whereas it had no trouble doing so on the PC). Not counting GTA: San Andreas (which was only AO-Rated for a short time until Rockstar had the game recalled and forcible removed the LOCKED OUT 'hot coffee' minigame from the game's code), I haven't seen any AO-rated console games. ... with one exception. Back when 3DO was around, I saw some vampire-themed softcore porn game (or perhaps it was a VCD) for the 3DO. I never got to play it, even though I was curious...
  14. Which current generation console is best if you're like me and you dig 2D games (especially 2D fighting games)? Please note that I'm only concerned with 2D games which retail on optical media, not old-school 2D games that are being put up for sale on the 'Virtua Console' of each respective system.
  15. Are there any videogames which you feel deserve to be remade? Many companies do remakes of their old games because its easier to stick with established work than to innovate, but sometimes remakes are warranted. I would really like to see the original Silent Hill remade for the PC or modern consoles, if for no other reason than the fact that Silent Hill 1 is a Playstation exclusive. Timesplitters 2 would be a fantastic game if not for the fact that its control system is the worst of ANY FPS I've ever player. EA fixed the control system when it published Timesplitters 3: Future Perfect, but given the fact that I invested $$$ on Timesplitters 2, I'd like to play an edition of it that actually controls well.
  16. Have you ever skipped a generation of gaming? I was a hardcore gamer during the 8 and 16-bit eras. But I skipped out during the 32/64-bit era in which the Saturn, PS1, and N64 competed against one another. Why? First, I wanted to take my studies more seriously; I spent too much time playing games during elementary school. Second, I had a PC to do high school work on, so I didn't need a new console in order to play the latest video games. Third, at first I wasn't sure which console would be a good investment, although I later came to want the PS1 over the N64 since the latter was a terrible choice if you were partial to 2D fighters.
  17. Sega developed Sonic the Hedgehog as a counterpart to Nintendo's Mario. But what about the lesser known counterparts that were developed in response to a competitor's franchise games? Here are some examples I can think of: To counter the Zelda games, Sega developed Golden Axe Adventure for the Master System, and later developed Beyond Oasis for the Genesis. To counter Eternal Champions (Sega's franchise 2D fighter), Nintendo developed Killer Instinct.
  18. Are there any mature-rated games you played as a minor that you would not let your own kids play as minors? As a minor, I used to play a lot of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 during the 16-bit era. If I had kids, I wouldn't mind letting them play those games since the violence isn't terribly realistic. Doom, on the other hand ... That's a different story! I was an adult when games like GTA and Manhunt came along, and even though I enjoy playing them, those are games I would not let a minor play (especially Manhunt!).
  19. Have you ever purchased a video game console despite having a sense that it was unlikely to 'win' or even tie among its competitors? During the 16 bit wars, the SNES and Genesis were on equal footing. If you owned either system, you knew you were going to enjoy great games until the end of the 16 bit wars, and that you wouldn't miss out on too many 3rd party games (i.e. the Mortal Kombat series, the NBA Jam games, etc). Unless you count the Turbografx-16, the 16-bit era was not a time when there was an apparent underdog. But what about other times during gaming history? Did you invest in a Sega Master System despite the fact that Nintendo had a virtual monopoly over gaming in most of the world during the 8-bit era? Personally, I invested in a Sega Dreamcast despite predictions that most gamers were holding out on it in favour of supporting the PS2 once it came out. In fact, I even bought my Dreamcast AFTER Sega announced that it was going to get out of the hardware business. I don't regret my decision one bit. I enjoyed my Dreamcast much more than my PS2, and given the time of my purchase, I got my Dreamcast pretty cheap!
  20. Which do you prefer: 2D or 3D games? Your preference will probably depend on genre (i.e. you love 3D sports games but prefer 2D, side-scrolling platformers like oldschool Sonic & Mario). Nevertheless, on the whole, do you prefer 3D games over 2D ones? I prefer 2D games for many reasons. 2D Fighters are my favourite type of game, and perhaps more importantly, it seems like all the attention that goes into movie-quality 3D rendering detracts from level design & game mechanics (the 3D Castlevanias are a perfect example of this).
  21. What is your favourite type of video game controller? For example, do you prefer control pads (wired / wireless), joysticks, racing wheels & pedals, lightguns, guitars (for Guitar Hero, etc)...? Since 2D Fighting Games are my favourite game genre, I consider the Sega Genesis 6-button (wired) gamepad the best controller that I have personally ever used. I don't care for playing fighting games on modern gamepads (i.e. the Playstation or Xbox gamepads) because the button layout is terrible for fighting games that use the light-medium-strong attack system for punches and kicks. I probably would've loved the Japanese-style Sega Saturn gamepad if only I had a Saturn. The Japanese-style Sega Saturn gamepad is like the Genesis 6-button gamepad except for the fact that it has 2 triggers atop the controller.
  22. ROTFLMAO. You could probably apply your statement to any PC built before 2005; that's how disturbingly bloated Windows Vista is! Anyway, I brought up that website because I found it hilarious, but since some of you have attempted to install XP on rigs with CPU speeds < 500 MHZ, I suggest you try Linux. Old hardware goes a lot further on Linux than it does on Windows.
  23. Why are video gamers the only ones smart enough to realize that, as opposed to politicians and journalists? Video games are merely a popular scapegoat of this day and age. Back in the day, politicians would make similar comments about how comic books were 'corrupting children.' Witchhunts and moral panics never go away; their topics of focus merely change. (if only the general public was smart enough to realize that )
  24. This is the 1st time I've heard of "Jigdaw Killer." Anyway, the government's decision is stupid, as far as I'm concerned. If people can't buy the games in their own stores, they'll order them internationally, or download copies of the games - legally or illegally (the former types of downloads are becoming more prevalent, what with the popularity and ease of services like Valve's Steam). Politicians should work on smoothing over relations with Pakistan instead of focusing on trivial things like video games. Or maybe they should do something practical, like make telemarketing calls illegal (I'm sick and tired of having people from India call me up and try to sell me s**t like insurance for my credit cards; they keep calling, no matter how many times I tell them not to and demand that they take me off their call list).
  25. I don't think you'll find too many FPS fans who'd agree with your opinion that 'Doom sucks.' Doom pretty much 'made' the first person shooter genre, and is easily one of the most influential games of all time.
