  1. Congratulations! I myself love the little guy, so much so that for the first time in about 20 years it's going to be the only current gen system I'm getting. Well besides the DS. Was a bit surprised actually to see that I nearly got 20 games for it already in just over 7 months. If you love arcade racing games, be sure to pick up Excite Truck, as it's one of those game that's incredibly underappreciated. Most reviewers seemed to have played it for 10 minutes and quickly wrote it off, which is such a shame since it's my favourite racer since Sega Rally on the Saturn. Which still is my all-time favourite.
  2. All right. I'll do the covers first and then continue on with the posters, since they take a lot longer to put back together.
  3. Those are very good points. I myself believe it's best to keep the scans as close to the original as possible. Not trying to create web-like pages or anything, but try to capture the essence of an actual magazine. Over-editing might seem them look very nice, but at the same time, a lot of those pages just come out feeling wrong. I re-edited a couple of magazines I'd done before to try and follow the suggestions in another post on this board. Tinkering with brightness and saturation, as well as using the colour fill tool to create very clean pages. But in the end the positives didn't outweigh the negatives, so I went back to my originals. And if someone does like them at a higher contrast or with more colour saturation or whatever, they can indeed change a couple of CDisplay settings and set them exactly the way they like them.

    Gamepro Numbering

All right, I made the decision to go with the numbering from this page in the end: http://www.magweasel.com/wiki/GamePro It's the one that makes most sense, so it will be the easiest way to number these. Otherwise the first issue would have been issue 010. So the list for releases I will be following is the following one. If anyone else working on GamePro scans could do the same, it would certainly make the releases more uniform and well-organized in the end. GamePro 001 - may-jun 1989 (USA) GamePro 002 - jul-aug 1989 (USA) GamePro 003 - sep-oct 1989 (USA) GamePro 004 - nov 1989 (USA) GamePro 005 - dec 1989 (USA) GamePro 006 - jan 1990 (USA) GamePro 007 - Gamepro Numbering

Hmm, I found something interesting right here: " This 64 page compendium collected the first year's worth of the comic strip, as well as an exclusive introductory story and a poster of the awesome cover art. In between the June and July issues, we put out our first special one-shot publication - a 64-page compendium that collected the first year's worth of the Adventures of GamePro comic strip, along with an exclusive introductory story and a poster of the awesome cover art. This was a dream come true for me to collect all the hard work I put into the strip each month, as well as giving me the opportunity to stretch out and give some more background story about the Zardoth vs. Evil Darklings conflict. Collected together, I was happy that the overall story really had some weight and teeth. I was also able to commission a cover by Mitch O'Connell based on the original artwork that I had painted myself for the cover. My ego was disappointed that I wasn't able to use my own cover artwork (we ended up using it as a full-page ad for this comic), but when I saw Mitch's awesome painting, all those feelings were instantly erased. This first issue sold for $2.95 and actually did pretty well, selling over 35,000 copies on the newsstand. " At the bottom of this page: http://gamepro.com/gamepro/domestic/games/...res/28746.shtml If there were 9 others like this and they are being counted as actual issues, we might have solved out little dilemma.

Thanks! That does indeed seem to help. I just noticed that when you click on one of the magazines in the bottom column, something like this pops up on the right hand side: Issue 176 (labeled 186) Date March 2004 Price $5.99 Cover Hitman: Contracts So basically every magazine has been labelled with an issue number the is +10 of the actual release number... I'm backing the wiki page up to make sure it doesn't get lost. That way it will be easier to check out something like this. What do you think Philly? Should we number the releases like they are on that site, which would mean that the cover would say 129 when we call it 119? Or were there 10 other issues of this magazine, perhaps under another name that were counted by the publisher. If so we'd be better off using the cover numbers. But if there weren't any others we would be starting at GamePro 010 - May-jun 1988 which also wouldn't make any sense. We're screwed either way it seems.

I just noticed that the numbering for these magazines is a bit confusing, to say the least. It is stated in Wiki that the first magazine was released in March 1989, but when you go by that date and count upwards and you look at the issue of june 1996, it should be 88. But on the cover it clearly states 93... Naturally it is issue 93 as it states so on the cover and when following that numbering up till today, everything checks out. So I was wondering, what's up with the numbering of the older mags? At first I thought it might have been that in the early years they only released 1 magazine during the summer months or something like that, but that can't be the case as we actually have too many magazines instead of too little. So could it be that the Wiki is simply wrong, or were there more than 12 magazines a year released or something?
  8. Allright, a small update on the situation. I just got a reply with the new shipping price. Huray Now the only problem is that my paypal account is acting up and refusing to send him the money, even though I know for sure that my Visa is perfectly fine. Hopefully I'll be able to pay with an international bank to bank transfer or otherwise I will have another major probem...
  9. Well, I posted that I had won 12 UK Official Sega Saturn magazines last week. There seems to be a problem. The shipping for 1 magazine is ?6.5, but the seller mentioned that he would combine shipping when you bought more than 1 item. So when I check out, I get over ?80 on shipping charges. You'd think, no problem. Just send him a message.... Well, I have sent him 5 or 6 messages and emails about this, and he simply doesn't answer me. Not sure what the problem is but I noticed a couple of other people mentioned this in his feedback, although not that many. The thing is that I'm absolutely not going to pay ?80 for shipping a couple of magazines when I've got a parcel on the way with 2 Japanese Saturns, 1 Japanese Dreamcast, a PC-Engine arcade stick, a Neo-Geo AES original stick, a Saturn Virtua Stick, 4 GBA's and a whole bunch of Japanese retro games, all for ?55! So it looks like I won't be getting these mags... I'm even a bit scared about him complaining about me to e-bay, claiming I'm a non-payer. :( I do have a mention on the items, that I sent him an email asking for the price on the 19th and the 22nd, so I hope they will understand it's not my fault. <_<
  10. The idiots at Gamespot playing with the Wii for the first time:
  11. Good idea. But for me personally, I picked no. Simply because once I get a great quality digital copy of the magazine I don't need the original anymore. It's great if I already own it, so I won't throw them away or anything, but I'm not looking to collect them like that. Storage space is also an issue for me. And living in Europe automatically negates my entry. I am interested in getting new mags from ebay and such though, only to be able to scan them and distribute afterwards.
  12. That looks incredible! I've got a whole bunch of European Club Nintendo magazines from the nes years and the start of the Snes are, the downside is that they are all in Dutch... That's good for me, but I don't think any of you would be much with them. The silver lining is that these were distributed in pretty much all of Europe, so there is an English language version of these out there. So far I've seen English, German, Portugese I believe, French and Dutch versions. Every single one is the same, except for the language.
  13. That's so very true. I simply scan my own CVG's and Sega Saturn magazines because I love them so much and don't want them to get lost in time. So for me it's not a problem, I'm doing them anyway. The magazine industry is somewhat of an annoying part of the whole videogame industry. At least that's the way I see it. Let me explain. Over the course of growing up you tend to have read many magazines and they have in one way or another become a part of your gaming heritage. Now the annoying part is that they either get thrown out, lost, or simply get torn to pieces over the years. So the best secondary solution is to simply scan them in and share them with other people who are in the same position, or have missed out on all the classic magazines and would love to catch up on them. UG is great and all, you won't hear me say a bad thing about them. There are many great people over there. But it's a bit disorganized, at least when concerning magazines. I know there are several people over there who are interested in contributing to this cause, but like you said, it's too easy to get demotivated. Especially when you put lots of effort and detail into your work and get little in return. That's why I jumped on the opportunity to try and be a part of the retromags "revival", if I can call it that. We have the possibility to get a bunch of people together and set up a nice little project where everyone will find something they love. I'm not that good in distributing thanks to my lousy ISP. But I have a bunch of classic magazines left to scan, and you can count me in on the editing part as well. I don't mind editing scans if it helps move things forward, it does take time away from my ability to scan my own mags, but they'll get done in time.
  14. As some of you might already know, I had scanned all the UK Official Sega Saturn Magazines that I had in my possession. Which were only 7 magazines out of the total of 37 that were released before it got cancelled. Well now, thanks to the heads up from Wazzal over at Underground Gamer, I have just won an additional 12 issues of one of my favourite magazines ever. These come just in time for the start of my vacation, so you might expect some new releases in the coming weeks and months.
  15. Due to some rumblings in the back of the site, I have no idea if I will keep releasing my issues under this banner or not. If there's no coming back for me you'll always be able to find my future work here, unless a certain someone deletes the link, which wouldn't even surprise me at this point. This 1st post will be updated as I get started on new scans. I will also keep updating the % of each magazine that I'm currently working on. Once a magazine has been completed, it will be posted along with download links and a preview image in the Magazine Releases section of the board. I'll be rescanning my old magazines in between working on new magazines, and once I have re-edited or completely re-scanned and uploaded an issue, I will add "completed +release date" to differentiate between the new and the old versions. Once a new version has been released I will remove the old one from the server so you don't have to worry about mixing the 2 up. The new ones will generally be a bit larger in size due to the higher quality as well. I have started using new editing techniques which work much better on either black or white pages, this way black pages will actually be black and not grey and white ones won't have any of the nasty yellowing that sometimes can be found around the edges of certain pages. I will also take greater care about finding and removing dust particles as well as other spots and stuff that shouldn't be on there. And finally thanks to the new "Vibrance" tool in CS4 and the correct settings at which this will be used, the colours of the magazines will be as close tot the original as I can possibly make them. You might have noticed that the saturation process of before did quite a good job of making the pages look vibrant, but it only seemed to target the warm colour spectrum. Now with the combination of a lower saturation level along with a 50% Vibrance boost, the full spectrum finally gets the attention it deserves. You will be able to tell them apart from the new thank you page at the end of the magazine, at the bottom right of this page there will also be a date. That way you can check which version you have. The ones without a date are the old ones. and also from the fact that the name of the month in the title will be written in full from now on. The pages will be resized to a width of 1440 instead of 1280 and they will also be much cleaner than the previous version, thanks to y new equipment. 16. I have a feeling it will be hard to beat me. The last sporting event I attended was a WWF European tour in Brussels some 18 years ago, when I was about 12. I'm not really into sports, and I guess it shows. I still remember the highlight was that I got to see the Undertaker in real life.
  17. Just let me know when the first one has been uploaded to the ftp and I'll get started.
  18. Ah, that's not too bad actually. Let me see, the ones I'm definitely interested in and which I would certainly scan also after I'm done with my CVG, Saturn and DreamCast set are the following: CVG (Computer & Video Games) (UK): #131 (OCT92) - #145 (DEC93) EGM (US) #41 (DEC92), #45 (APR93) - #61 (AUG94) Mega Force (NL/BE) (in Dutch) #6 (Summer 92) Mega Force (FR) (in French) #10 (OCT92), #20 (SEP93) - #24 (JAN94) Sega Pro (UK) #20 ("Special Issue", JUN93) Sega Magazine (NL) (in Dutch) #2 (APR93) 4 Dutch-language mini-mags that were sent as part of the official Sega Club in Belgium I already have the full Mean Machine Sega scan set, otherwise I would have loved those as well. Let me know how this works out for you, or if I should remove a couple more. Also something I would like to ask you, but this isn't necessary if it's too much trouble. It's just something that would be much more convenient for myself. I work during the daytime, so I'm wondering if it would be possible to hold off a bit before you send them, at least until I go on my 2 week break. That way I'm sure to be home when the package is delivered which sometimes is a bit of a problem when I receive mail-orders but the postman doesn't want to deliver it next door. My break starts the week of June 5th. If that doesn't work for you I could always give you the adres of a family member, so just let me know. Anyway, thanks a lot for doing this! I love these old Sega and Nintendo mags. So you're sure they are in good hands, and there are quite a few people interested in the scans as well, so you're not only making me happy. Let me know if you prefer that I make the payment through a bank transfer or with Paypal or anything. Perhaps you could then send the account number through a PM.
  20. Oh, Dutch magazines. I'm getting the feeling you're from Belgium and not from Holland. The thing is, so am I. Perhaps we could work something out. I don't have a car, but if you live in the neighbourhood of Gent I could possibly arrange to pick them up myself. ^_^
  21. Yeah, very nice indeed. If you need a hand, just let me know.

Yeah, Viewtiful Joe is great. Have both games on the GameCube and also the one on the DS, but the DS one and the second GC game are still on my backlog... The game is not as easy to get in as you might think, but once you get the hang of it, it really is lots of fun. I'm also thinking about picking up VJ Red Hot Rumble, but I'm not sure if it's any good. Hopefully it's a bit in the same vein as Power Stone on DreamCast.
  23. It does matter that I have a wireless connection, does it not?

Just order this and God Hand a couple of days ago now that they were both discounted to ?23. I'm expecting them to show up in the next few days. But my Pal and Japanese PS2's are both stored away right now,and I don't feel like getting them set up really. Perhaps in a couple of months when I take my long overdue 4 week vacation. Right now I have plenty of stuff to entertain me with a Wii, Saturn, DreamCast and Neo-Geo connected to the main tv.
