  1. Regarding Ys III, I prefer the Genesis version to the Turbo CD version, at least from a gameplay perspective. The animated cinematics and music are better on the Turbo CD version, of course.
  2. Super Mario RPG is on the "coming soon" list for North America's Virtual Console. The aforementioned list is derived from the ESRB's rating schedule. Speculation is that Super Mario RPG will be the 250th VC game.
  3. Oh yeah!! Looking forward to that. Now I just have to finish the new DS version of Final Fantasy 4. Then Chrono Trigger in December. Oh, man. Old-school RPG goodness on my NDS!!
  4. Both games (Ys I and Ys II) are relatively short. In fact, you could probably finish part 1 in under 5 hours. Until I got the VC version, it had been years since I played them. I'm still playing through part 2 (again), so I'll let you know how long that takes <G>. Fun games though. Great music.
  5. It's basically an 8-bit RPG which features battle mechanics similar to Hydlide (i.e. you walk into enemies, as opposed to turn-based or sword-swinging battles). Granted, this game implements this mechanic much better than Hydlide. This style of game play does require a bit of adjustment, but it's easy enough to master <G>. The game holds up well, considering it's from 1990. If you like the original Legend of Zelda, Crystalis or Willow on the NES, then you'll likely enjoy this game. The music alone is worth the download. This game has the best music ever in a video game, IMHO. (Final Fantasy 7 and Actraiser are my next all-time favorites)
  6. That's pretty much my opinion too. How did you know I had a crumby life?
  7. There's a nice, concise walkthrough (with maps) in PDF format here: http://www.vnoteschronicle.com/ys_book_i_ii.htm
  8. Finally! And on my birthday too!! Ys Book I & II for the TurboGrafx-16 CD came out today on North America's Virtual Console. It's been on VC-review.com's "Coming Soon" list since January or February. It's what pushed me to finally buy my own Wii, instead of just playing with other people's Wii's. This game blew my mind back in 1991. Everything from the original Turbo CD version seems to be intact. The CD audio music, recorded dialogue, anime cinematics (limited though they may be, by today's standards), etc. This game was ahead of its time during the late 8-bit era / early 16-bit era. http://www.vc-reviews.com/games/tg16/ys_book_i_and_ii
  9. Ok, thanks for the reply. That was gonna drive me nuts.
  10. When/how was EGM Top Score 1989 released? It's not part of the series proper (i.e. it's not numbered as part of the main series). Was it released as a one-off issue, or was it a supplement that came with a regular EGM issue? If so, which regular EGM? Any info is appreciated. TIA. Here's the cover, obtained from the scanned issue on RetroMags.
  11. Eh, it's dorks featured in popular culture during the late 80's. Similar to the video game ads. Those pix made me think about it.
  12. There's a very good chance that "Ys Book I & II" (TurboGrafx CD) will come out in North America on Monday. I'm really looking forward to its eventual release. That game blew my mind in 1991 when I first saw it on a friend's system. Mostly because of the cinematics and music. Here's a good site to read about Virtual Console releases. http://www.vc-reviews.com/
  13. Is everybody good and traumatized now? Good! Then my work here is done. Here's his personal blog: http://babyboyfreberg.typepad.com/
  14. <sarcasm>But nobody is a cool as this guy.</sarcasm>
  15. Just my two cents here, but I would rather see older magazines first anyway. They are the more rare and valuable items. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way. I'm very please that early Nintendo Powers are already online. I'm looking forward to more early EGM's, etc.
  16. Glad my contribution could help. BTW, there were a few NES Atlas Guides and Super NES Guides listed on eBay a few nights ago. You might take a look at those, as funds permit. I don't have them myself.
  17. Just for clarification, Expert Gamer and EGM are two different magazines. According the Wikipedia article, Expert Gamer is what used to be EGM2 (a spin-off series from the original Electronic Gaming Monthly).
  18. This is just for clarification. And I don't mean to insult anybody's intelligence here, in case you already know this. EGM 5 is the "1990 Buyer's Guide". EGM 15 is the "1991 Buyer's Guide". EGM 7 is the "Top Score 1989" issue (Green Logo, not Yellow one). EGM 5: (sorry, this is the only picture I could find online) EGM 7: EGM 15:
  19. I started picking up issues of Game Player's (Strategy and Buyer's) Guide To Nintendo in 1988 (there were multiple GP titles from 1988 into the early 1990's). I bought EGM 1, 3, 6 and 9 at my local drug store or grocery store, but I didn't start buying it every month until issue 16. I also bought GamePro off the rack in the early days, starting with issue 1. My first actual subscription was Nintendo Fun Club Newsletter, starting with number 3. Of course, I rolled that subscription over to Nintendo Power. I still have issues 1 - 31 and 35. I have a few misc. other NP's from over the years after that. I still have some of my old Game Player's, and I've picked up a few more from eBay. I have EGM 9 still, and 16 - 61. And I have misc. issues after that. I gave my EGM 1, 3 and 6 to various friends back in late '89 or early '90. What a fool I was in my youth. I guess I was in 10th or 11th grade at the time. My GamePro 1 is missing the cover, and the first few outer pages are barely hanging onto the staples. I still have quite a few GamePro's dated from 1990 through 1993 or 1994. I'd have to dig those out, and I'll admit I haven't taken care of those as much.
  20. Here's a link to the Chrono Trigger DS trailer on YouTube.
  21. I'd like to see Crystalis, Rygar and Willow (never going to happen because it's a licensed title, I know) for the NES.
  22. Ah, good call concerning the search by year. I didn't even think about that. Thanks.
  23. Yeah, no doubt. It's become the first place I go to check out screenshots of older games. Wikipedia articles often link to it.
