There are badges for outdoor activities, disability awareness, good manners, and now, as Gizmodo points out, video games. The video games badge falls under the academic and sports category. In order to attain such a standard of "excellence," a Scout must, successfully, complete a number of tasks. more: http://www.neowin.net/news/boy-scouts-create-a-quotvideo-gamesquot-badge

  6. http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-finally-allows-mechwarrior-4-to-be-freely-released After a year of squabbling over licensing rights, Mechwarrior 4 will finally be available as a free download. If you haven't been following the drama, here's what's been going on. Smith & Tinker, an offshoot of FASA, the former development house responsible for Mechwarrior 4, announced that in honor of Battletech's 25th anniversary (Battletech is the official name of the Mechwarrior franchise), Mechwarrior 4 would be released for free. It was also in the wake of an announcement that the series would be getting a reboot. They gave MekTek Studios, the team that has basically supported the community for the decade since MW4's release, rights to distribute it. They released an SDK called "MekPak 3.1" that allowed players and developers to weed out any stray bugs before its re-release. All systems were go until Microsoft showed up and crashed the party. It turns out they needed sign-off from Microsoft, who owns part of the Battletech franchise, to push this through. Needless to say, Microsoft wasn't very quick about this, and the project seemed to have disappeared off the radar. Nevertheless, MekTek proundly announced this week that the deal did indeed go through and that the free release of Mechwarrior 4 is "imminent." No date yet, but I'll take imminent over "whenever Microsoft decides to let us have it." From the MekTek website: "After nearly a year since the announcement came, MekTek Studios is pleased to announce, that Microsoft Legal has given the all clear for the free release of Mechwarrior4. This hallmark movement by Microsoft Games couldn't come at a better time, as the Mechwarrior community is attempting a rebirth, amidst an announcement of a Mechwarrior Reboot. Thank you Microsoft."
  7. http://www.neowin.net/news/sega-lays-of-73-restructures-with-focus-on-downloadable-titles Sega announced today that they will be tackling a massive restructuring of their US and European operations. Sega West President Mike Hayes told IndustryGamers that there will be a total of 73 redundancies comprised of 36 in San Francisco and 37 in London. The London branch will now handle traditional retail games, while the remaining San Francisco staff will be focusing solely on downloadable titles. In a statement to IndustryGamers, Hayes said, “We've been going through the planning process the past 6 months, taking a look at the future of the market and where we think our investments need to be. It's no surprise that the share of digital is growing as an overall part of the video game business, so we decided we have to invest more in that specific area. And notably, we had to get our business groups appropriately sorted to provide the right focus. Traditionally, Sega of America and Sega Europe had been running a dual company where both would look at traditional goods and both would look at the digital side. What we decided to do is to make San Francisco the kind of hub for our digital efforts, and therefore make London the hub for the traditional packaged goods part. I would stress, however, that this is very much administrative reorganization, because clearly we want to be very successful with digital globally. Likewise, we want to continue to be successful with traditional goods. So the reorganization allows us to be much more efficient in terms of our costs, but probably more importantly in the way that we can look at the future business.” Earlier this year Sega announced that Sonic 4 will be coming as a downloadable title, so they already have projects in the “digital” pipeline. Hayes mentions all the big platforms: XBLA, PSN, Steam, iTunes and others as part of their approach to downloadable titles. He also says to look forward to new IP announcements for downloadable platforms “over the next few months.” Hayes is also quick to quell worries that tradition games are not forgotten with this new focus. In a statement to 1UP, he said, “the move will not impact Sega's current schedule, nor will it affect the number of traditional retail games it releases.” This segregation of market approaches between branches may be just what Sega needs to streamline their struggling business.

But after awhile of fighting the same old baddies, the thrill is gone. When that happens, it’s time to find a new adversary, or make a fresh new approach to our favorite bad guys.

  18. http://www.neowin.net/news/kojima-consoles-to-end-in-quotthe-near-futurequot Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind the Metal Gear Solid franchise, has stated his belief that videogame consoles will be phased out at some point “in the near future.” Speaking during a press conference in Japan earlier today, the celebrated developer said that players should have access to their experiences “on the go”. "In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform,” said Kojima. “Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel — wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.” In response to this, SCEJ's Hiroshi Kawano suggested that Kojima’s remarks were “a bold prediction,” though nonetheless respects his opinion on the matter. “We hope he continues to develop for platforms, but we deeply respect his sense of taking on a challenge,” said Kawano. Earlier in the morning, the developer announced a new collaboration with Capcom to include a bonus mode in metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker that would see Monster Hunter included in the game. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is set to hit store shelves on April 29 in Japan, June 11 in the United States and June 18 in the United Kingdom as a PSP exclusive.
