OK, here it is, the first issue of Famitsu – a landmark issue if ever there was one. Please be aware however, that this IS NOT a scan of the original magazine (which is super-rare and costs hundreds of dollars) but rather is a scan of a reproduction. The gray borders around each page are new to the reproduction, allowing them to occasionally print some commentary on the contents of the page. Otherwise, the content of the magazine, including the ads, is identical to the original.

However, the reproduction is printed at about half the physical dimensions of the original. As such, the quality of small detail suffers somewhat – a fault of the magazine’s printing, not of the scan. The copy I had also suffered from some water damage, which is visible in a few places. Even so, unless someone is willing to scan a copy of the original #1 (I won’t hold my breath), this is probably the best we’ll get, and I feel it’s an important look at the origins of the most influential video game magazine ever published.

Finally…the cover. This is where most of the damage was evident. Warped by water damage and extremely faded, the cover was in such bad shape that I opted to repaint it (something I would normally never do with a scan). It wasn’t possible to repaint all of the tiny spaces between the Japanese characters, so the text is a little muddy, but on a whole I feel the cover is much more presentable than the unadulterated scan. For anyone who finds such digital manipulation an abomination (moreso than spot clone-stamping here and there, that is), I have included the original scan of the cover as the final page before the Retromags splash page.

Anyway, this issue is a special exception. I hope you can look past its faults to appreciate the history! Expect all future Famitsu issues from me to be similar in quality to the previous two I released.

Once again another singer/actor idol on the cover. Speaking of which, I use CDisplay to view cbr files, and I noticed that the cover looked oddly washed out when viewing the cbr, despite looking fine when simply viewing the jpg. It turns out that my CDisplay has "color balance on" set as the default option under "color balance" in the configuration menu. Turning it off displays the file correctly (although I noticed that having it turned off made some old scans of certain comics look rather dark, so I guess sometimes it offers an improvement to old/poor scans. Anyway, just wanted to mention that in case anyone else uses the same program.

Well, I had intended on releasing these in the order I scanned them, but the first issue I scanned is on hold while the cut-off dates in the database wait to be fixed. So for now you get an issue from a couple years earlier - in this case the start of 1999 with the first of what promises to be many Gundam covers.

As this is the first issue of D.P. to be put up, I'll say that my general impression is that in contrast to most English magazines, it devotes a large chunk of its coverage to in-depth strategy sections, as opposed to short previews of upcoming games (though of course it has those too.) There is an insane amount of information in these issues and were anyone inclined to actually read every word from cover to cover, it would probably take twice as long as an American mag of the same length.

Although this is the second issue I'm uploading, it's actually the first one I scanned and edited. My reason for picking it first was twofold: first, it was the issue my hand closed on when I shut my eyes and picked one at random. Second, and more importantly, it was to be the first magazine I ever debound using a heat gun, and should I have accidentally lit the cover on fire and burnt it to ash while adjusting to the learning process, I could think of no greater candidate for immolation than a cover featuring Square's masterpiece of mediocrity, The Bouncer. Enjoy.

Another Japanese magazine, another Gundam cover. These things can't be helped - it's like expecting something other than a car on the cover of a Car & Driver magazine. Which coincidentally might not have been a bad choice, as there's a cover story on Gran Turismo 2. Plus, lots of RPG strategy with sections on Parasite Eve 2, Tokimeki Memorial 2, Chrono Cross, Growlanser, Valkyrie Profile, and Little Princess: Marl Ōkoku no Ningyō Hime 2 (the sequel to Nippon Ichi's Rhapsody.)

This issue had a hell of a lot of glue that got everywhere during de-binding, so cleaning it up took longer than usual, but I think it turned out all right in the end. Enjoy!

A couple of warnings: page 127 has a somewhat terrifying bit of defacement using whiteout. Also, the bottom 1/4 of the page that makes up pages 95 and 96 had been cut out, so I filled it with white space to keep the pages the same dimensions as everything else. Otherwise the issue was in great shape. Enjoy!

This is the 2nd issue in the Dengeki Playstation D series (meaning it came with a disc full of demos, movies, and other content). These issues are much shorter than a typical issue of Dengeki PlayStation, as the disc itself was meant to be the primary content. As such, I urge anyone unfamiliar with Dengeki PlayStation to download one of the other issues to get a sense of what the magazine is really like.

Adult content: covers adult games for the PC and consoles.

Please note that the demo CD-ROM included between pages 2 and 5 is counted as pages 3 and 4 in the issue's pagination.

I have uploaded the CD-ROM to the Internet Archive here: https://archive.org/details/TechGian1997Sep
This CD-ROM is designed to work in a 16-bit Windows environment, so it will not run on 64-bit versions of Windows unless emulating a 16-bit operating system.

Tech Gian covers adult bishoujo games and visual novels for PC and consoles.
    Special notes:
This issue comes with a CD-ROM full of demos, videos, etc. This disc is designed for Windows 95, and as such needs to run in a 16-bit Windows environment. Modern versions of Windows may not run this disc unless emulating an older Windows environment, but for anyone interested, I have uploaded an ISO of the disc at archive.org here: https://archive.org/details/TechGian1997OctoberDemoDisc The above mentioned CD-ROM was originally held in a plastic sleeve inserted between the cover and the first page. As such, the front and back of the disc were assigned the page numbers of 3 and 4. I have included a photo of the disc at the end of the archive (my flatbed scanner is broken at the moment), but be aware that this is the reason the page numbers 3 and 4 are absent and the printed page numbers do not match up with the file numbers. ALL PAGES HAVE BEEN SCANNED AND INCLUDED. Regarding the manga section at the end of the magazine: While the magazine itself is read from left to right as in western countries, Japanese manga is read from right to left. As such, the manga section begins at the last page of the magazine and progresses backwards (page-number-wise). In order to facilitate reading the magazine on a CBR reader, I have reordered the manga section so it can be read in the proper sequence. Be aware that this means the printed page numbers will go in reverse order.

I've streamlined my Photoshop-fu, editing this 228 page beast in under 3 hours, and the results (in my opinion) are indistinguishable from back when I took 3 times as long to get it done. Fie upon the clone stamp! All hail content-aware fill! Huzzah!

Well, if you need further proof that the Japanese gaming scene and the American gaming scene aren't exactly the same, look no further than the 16 page feature story on adult strip mahjong games. You won't find that in GamePro. But then, why would you want to?
