Game Remakes That Never Made It

I was just reading a thread about the recently stymied Chrono Trigger fan remake, and it reminded me of another remake that I was eagerly awaiting - Metroid Prime 2D. I downloaded an early demo of this but couldn't get it to work, then a short while later Nintendo apparently sank the project.

I was disappointed because I thought the last 3 2D Metroids (Super, Fusion and Zero Mission) were the best of the lot (I feel the same way about most - if not all - franchises that have made the leap to 3D).

Anybody else holding a candle to a remake that's lost to the ages?

I hope that sales of the 2D versions are enough of a clue that we want those kinds of games. 3D is not required for a game to be good. If not maybe a petition or two would tell them to stop trying to reinvent franchises in 3D and messing the games up when they could have put out a much cheaper, properly made 2D version and done much better.

I bought all the DS Metroids and Castlevanias. BC:Rearmed and MM9 were also instant purchases. Likewise with the new Mario game for Wii (not Galaxy, the other one). It would be really nice to find out they canned these fan projects due to a previously unannounced game in development.

Metroid Dread is not a canceled project. Retro Studios said they are only putting it away for the time being while Team Ninja and Nintendo work on the new one, Metroid: Other M.

Believe me, Other M will have some bits of the old school side-scrolling action.

But even the topic of Metroid Dread alone is biased because it's not a remake of any of the current Metroid, but a brand new title.

Here, let me show you a trailer to this fan-made remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus:

Also in case anyone's wondering, DPsx7 meant New Super Mario Bros. Wii which was announced at E3 this year. In fact, it's not a remake but a brand new sequel to first New Super Mario Bros. (on Nintendo DS - which was a remake of the original Super Mario Bros.).

To stay on topic, let me mention another unreleased remake I'd like to see which is the heavily rumored remake of the original Final Fantasy VII.

After the remake for FFIV for DS, Final Fantasy V is looking to be the next title that Square Enix is going to remake but they sure are taking their time.

Recently, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years have just released for WiiWare in the old-school 16-bit style, and is a direct sequel to FFIV.

On another note, a very interesting game that is getting a really good remake is the original Silent Hill. Konami is developing it for Wii, and it's called Silent Hill: Shatter Memories. It's turning out to be one of the best titles in the series so far.
