  1. I agree and disagree with you there E-Day. First up, it is not that you have to agree with the views of those on the staff, that is just wrong, sorry you feel that way. Second, I agree with you about maybe using a smiley or something to let people know when a joke is a joke (it is a downfall for text related comunique like this that 'intent' doesn't carry over very well and sense of humor is one such casualty of the uniform layout of forums). If a member is constantly making dry or sarcastic comments, even to serious inquiries, then maybe that member needs to rethink their comments before clicking the 'add reply' button, I bet it would stop a lot of misunderstandings.
  2. Thanks guys. I appreciate the birthday wishes. Just been putting together some stuff for this weekend here on RM, I hope everyone enjoys it.
  3. Was that the episode where Peter is saying something about "bird is the word" throughout?
  4. We have been a little strict on certain things that I know of, like ROM discussion, asking about where to get stuff after the cutoff date and torrents. Here is why on all three: ROM discussion- we are in a little bit of a grey area with the law here by offering copyrighted material like we are (that in itself is illegal). Why is it a grey area? If the copyright holder does not express their rights and pursues the situation, we are OK. If we start allowing people to go around saying "I just modded my Xbox 360 to play backup's and downloaded 100 of them overnight OMG I am so 1337!" we are going to start catching google and other search engines for that stuff. Why is that bad? If we come off as supporting illegal downloads of games and such then we attract a different kind of publisher, a game publisher, who many have proven in the past, they are not scared of litigation (specifically Nintendo). I have gotten many 'silent' OK's from various owners of some of the IP's we offer here due to our strict policing of the rules and keeping the forums "clean" of ROM talk. Requesting stuff after the cutoff- Recently, in the last 3 months, we have had probably 10 or so 'newbies' come in and request stuff after the cutoff, it has been discussed in the moderators area with a split in feelings about how it was handled and hopefully will be dealt with a little more diplomatically the next time it happens. As far as why it is not allowed, it is similar to the ROM discussion. If we allow people to come in, request just a certain review or article from a recent publication then we are stepping into waters that will get us shut down, real quick. Those reviews and those articles are the only reason that publishers have to get you to purchase the magazine, surely not enough people will purchase a magazine for the ads to make it profitable, if they would, magazines would be a lot different. If you claim you intend to buy a car but goto a dealership and drive off in one without paying for it, it is still wrong. Torrent discussion- this has been nixed pretty much because of the stigmata that Torrents have received as being the end all be all method of theft of intellectual properties. Besides, 99% of the members using Torrents won't seed them so they are a waste of effort and bandwidth of the people that tried to help keep torrents seeded. I have personally heard from various members of the magazine community from the time we deal with (and newer as some are still active) mention that Torrents are bad and well, when dealing with someone else's IP, you kind of have to take their comments to heart and abide by their requests, no matter how small. Does this hurt our members? I don't think so, rather than having dead torrent links in the download section we have always available RS, MU (more being added, just takes time) and direct download links. None of these topics, and the effort to protect the project from possible ramifications by blocking them, were meant to cause members to feel they would be banned over discussing things, or even asking about them (we have tried to be fair in replying that certain things are not allowed here). Now in the past, we had a certain member raise a stink (believe me, I run across him on other forums badmouthing me, another member of the staff and the whole project in general every once in awhile) and he was banned for his efforts. Yes, we banned him. He went above and beyond in his efforts to cause trouble, raise an uproar and just be generally destructive to the project, that is why he is no longer allowed to participate. We also found out, shortly after his banning, that he was taking scans from other sites (World of Spectrum being only one of many) and passing them off as his own here (I check most of the downloads that get uploaded and have a pretty good grasp of what is available in some wild places and when something is uploaded here that has the exact same creases, same smudge marks and general fading as something on another site, it is usually a good give away that someone is not telling the truth). He was not banned for having different ideas than the staff, or 99% of the memberbase here, he was banned twice, both times for the same reason, he was given a second chance and threw it away. We would rather not ban anyone here, we want people to help out and enjoy the fruits of the labor being done. But, Admin, Super Moderator, Moderator or no matter what your level here with the project, if you get out of hand and cause a lot of trouble, then yeah, something will have to be done, plain and simple. Will simply coming in and asking about a ROM for a system that is 20 something years old do it? No. We will ask you to not talk about that stuff, bring up that it is against the rules and that will probably be that (if you notice, we don't go back and delete the posts either unless they are plain spamming or of an adult pornographic nature-we get those everyonce in awhile and yes, those members are banned-if you have one post and it is a post with naked women or telling how to have adult relations with minors, then you can pretty much expect that you wasted your time signing up here). I hope that helps explain the situation a little better (probably more confusing than helpful though as most of my longer stuff is, lol ).
  5. Get a photo editing program (I use Gimp but a lot of people feel it is too cumbersome so you may want to try something else, though for free, the pickings are pretty slim). Post here when you have that editing software (another popular editing program here is Photoshop but that isn't cheap).
  6. The Mean Machine issues would fall under meppi's area of expertise. I will shoot him a message about this so he can see if he has anything to add to the conversation.
  7. That is a guy known as Magweasel, he recently gave us permission to use his magazine descriptions on our wiki. I really need to get ahold of him about seeing if we can work with him to get some of those issues scanned (like the 1st VG&CE that he has).
  8. Found this online recently, it is a fanmake of Silent Hill in the style of Myst, all in your browser. http://www.moregames24.com/2009/07/silent-hill-fr.html
  9. I had to stop playing games on the computer after realizing that I was more than slightly addicted to Peggle (so simple). Great game though. Never thought about putting a computer on the kitchen table (would be a great idea as every computer I have is networked, we could watch stuff from my home made DVR right there, go into the living room and continue where we left off and finish watching the show laying in bed).
  10. Since the Genesis is turning 20 tomorrow, Friday the 14th, I thought it might be fun to do some trivia for it. Continuing the question that was set in the thread for the birthday announcement: Who originally was planned to be the bad guy of the Sonic games?
  11. August, what can really be said about the month that for many (that didn't return to school in July) marks the end of their Summer vacation? Well, some good things we got this month, Sega released the Genesis on the 14th 20 years ago and we had some pretty cool issues get released this month. 1999: First stop in the Retromags time machine and we have our first Sega Dreamcast magazine available here on Retromags. This was the year that annoying little children started running around saying "I see dead people" and freaking out the elderly in Wal-Mart stores across the US with the release of M. Night Shyamalan's Sixth Sense in theaters. America became entranced with trivia shows again with ABC's "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" show and wrestling fans saw the debut of the juggernaut called Smackdown! (and The Rock chuckles all the way to the bank knowing another one of his catchphrases will live on). Across the pond we had a solar eclipse in Europe and Asia and while in this area of the world, we can't help but mention that two days before on the 9th Russian President Boris Yeltsin fires his Prime Minister, Sergei Stepashin, and even fires his entire cabinet (this being the fourth time he has fired his cabinet). Enough reminiscing, onto the mags: EGM Issue 121 - August 1999 Gamer's republic volume 2 issue 03 august 1999 Official Dreamcast Magazine Preview Issue - Aug 1999 (UK) Please feel free to thank our contributors by using the comment system in the Download Manager! 12. 1994: Whoop! Almost missed this one by a year or so, no biggie, we found it and are good to go. Not all things that happened in August through years are great, or fun to think about like when on the 1st when tragedy struck the Norwich Central Library in the United Kingdom when it caught fire and destroyed most of it's historical records. We got Woodstock 94, er, um, nevermind, we also had the World Series cancelled due to a player strike, er, the good news is we have some great issues available here at Retromags: Club Nintendo Vol.6 Issue 4 - August 1994 (GERMANY) EGM Issue 061 August 1994 EGM2 Issue 002 August 1994 GamePro Issue 061 August 1994 Nintendo Power Issue 063 (Aug 1994) Sega Visions Issue 20 - August/September 1994 1989: The final stop on our time trip this month before we present the oldest August magazine available here at Retromags. We all know that the Genesis turns 20 this Friday (the 14th) but did you know that Nasa launched STS-28 Space Shuttle Columbia on a secret 5 day military mission earlier in August (isn't that against the charter of Nasa to be doing military activities?) and Voyager II waved to the planet Neptune and it's moon Triton (Sega makes note of Neptune for future system name while Ford makes note of Triton for name of a future motor they put in their popular F150 pick up trucks). And for the hippy in everyone, we had Woodstock 89 (were there one of these for every year or something?). In gaming magazines we have slim pickings for August 1989 with only one issue released here on Retromags so far. Atarian Video Game Magazine - August 1989 Nintendo Power Issue 007 (Jul/Aug 1989) The oldest magazine we have available here at Retromags.com is: Videogaming Illustrated Issue 01 August 1982 Videogaming Illustrated #1 was donated by s1500, originally not even a member here at Retromags, he is an active member on the Atari Age forums and has been welcomed to the Retromags community as a valued member with his releases of many other issues of the extremely rare Videogaming Illustrated. 13. There are members working on getting the EGM magazines up to par with the Nintendo Power and Gamepro sections so those will probably be released eventually (this takes a lot of time). The others, hmmm, haven't heard much about them. Hope that helps.
  14. Your not going to get flamed here. We all try to be respectful of others opinions and as long as no one is being absolutely idiotic with their keyboard, they are cool. Speak your mind and don't worry. I can't stand sports games. I was never a sports person growing up and I have tried to watch sports on TV or get into them at live events but the commercialization of it all is just ruining it for me (come on, a 1 hour football game is strung out to something like 2 1/2 to 3 hours on television? Really?). I do like wrestling games though for the most part, that began and ended on Pro Wrestling on NES, but I have found some fun with the newer ones, not much, but some. I am getting into the "character" side scrollers again (like Mr. Nutz and Radical Rex, yea, I am getting into the more obscure stuff, not just the "hits").
  15. On a side note to what Kitsune mentioned there, I had a Halcyon system, now my ex has it, er had it, she sold it about 2 years ago, reportedly for $4200 with both games (everything had the boxes). I believe there were more than 5 sold though, I believe it was closer to 50, so it may be a typo somewhere.
  16. Welcome everyone that has come recently, it is great to have more fans and members that like what is going on here. CharmedonWB, there are still games being released on the Colecovision, Ghost n Zombies for instance is a recent homebrew release (got the full treatment too, box, cart and manual).
  17. Whoops! Sorry for posting that guide. I have no experience at all with Photoshop or Photostudio, for me it is either Paint or Gimp so far (now if we ever start talking video editing, then I have a lot of experience there).
  18. No Problem Lox. Great vids there everyone. Some really bring back the memories. Edit: Lox, you got the quiz answer wrong. Think someone else as the bad guy.
  19. It is easier to nail that saturation when I have the mag sitting here, lol. Using Photoshop huh? Let me see if I can find that guide that meppi made. Found it: http://www.retromags.com/forums/Scanning-E...uide-t2727.html
  20. Great editing, things are straight and no excess on the edges. Nice flat scans too. What program are you using to edit the scans? Here are a couple of side by side shots I made with some quick edits on your work. Your original is on the left. I used Gimp to do the edits. I applied a Color Enhance, Auto White and a Hue Saturation of 20 to these pics, in that order. Also, what is your DPI setting on your scanner?
  21. It is more of a case of having so many members, over 3400, and so few that participate. We are just trying to figure out if it is a case of there just aren't interesting topics or is it a lack of interest in general in the forums and members are here for other things, which there is nothing wrong with that. Like DP there being here mainly for the arcade, that is cool, others may be here just for the downloads, which is fine too. I came here because I was searching for Gamefan issues. Of course the issue I came here for has been taken down due to the rule change (and I didn't download it, thinking I will just get it later) but decided to stay because of the matureness and respect given to all members unlike certain other sites that I am a member of and slowly am dropping from my daily rotation.
  22. Lox, I fixed your vid there so it works correctly. Lox, and other members interested in embedding Youtube vids, you only need the part in blue here: ahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfPYvEipXuw Don't use the emded feature from Youtube, it won't work right. On the left there we have various options available, one is "Insert: Youtube" click that, copy the blue part from your Youtube URL and click OK and your good to go.
  23. Great looking scan there. As far as putting up a few sample pages, just zip them up and goto Rapidshare and upload them and post the resulting link. Thanks for helping out. What issues do you have available that you plan on scanning? It will help in adding your list to the Work in Progress thread.
  24. Just wanted to drop in and say thanks for scanning something we don't have at all available yet and that I know I can't wait to see your first release.
  25. We understand both of your points there Hidinger and Jake, we are not trying to bring in the rifraff willy nilly members (like what has happened to Gamefaqs in the last 2 years-before it was a site that you could get decent answers at, now, they spend their time flaming everyone else). We are trying to help expand the project so that we can bring in more great members (course for every 1 great member we have, we have 100-200 that don't do anything, many don't even download something for whatever reason). If we can get more help with completing sets then that is great too. Of course more members being here will mean that it is harder on the moderators to keep track of things but if they are on the ball, things will work out for the better in the long run.
