  1. Anyone have a good source for new/used Intellivison II controllers? (the ones that unplug from the console)? I had an original INTV that was really old, replaced the controllers and all was well but I ended up selling it because the game carts started to fail (trust me, i tried all the tricks to troubleshoot, just seemed the carts were getting too old). I'd love to just sit down and play Frog Bog again with the real controller!
  2. I read the whole interesting fiasco with that company about a month ago, and the destruction of some exotic cars without much regard for anything too. That whole company just reeks of bad business ethics, but what's scary is apparently the guys have moved onto another company already (some mobile phone market iirc) and will continue to milk another company dry funding their lavish lifestyles. Just FYI, the Gizmondo games, both released and unreleased, are "available" as some cracker figured out the RSA security on the SD cards and has been steadily releasing them over the past month or so (presuming it takes a while to crack em...). At least it'll give some programmers some new hardware to figure out, and an emulator or two to write for the releases.
  3. Good lord almighty, what was with the gun? And the pill-popping from a medication bottle? Should be re-titled "Crack-Man: I Think I Might Be In A Halo Game"
  4. Bah to Xbox360...I want modchipz for Wii! Apparently they'll be small too, I think they're going to be called "The Wii Ones". Wiicked! Wiihaw! /sarcasm off
  5. 600TB? I think I transferred that much last month on usenet.... Seriously though, 600TB is a lot of bandwidth for such a short period of time, of course a strong akamai-based web farm could handle that. What's more interesting is Microsoft's lack of vision to see that 2+ million broadband Xbox'es could be programmed with something like a "torrent enabled" Live to spread the files amongst the users who might already have the downloads, rather than shell out big bucks to feed the masses from their own hands (and corporate pocketbook). Congrats Micro$oft for having the total lack of initiative to figure out how to cut costs and relying on the masses to pay $60-80 a game at release time by passing the expense onto the consumer.
  6. All it does is take a 2 channel output, derive a left, centre, and right output, and outputs a mono surround to "fill in" as surround sound. Of course, this only works best on recordings that are encoded in "dolby surround". If not (ie. just a regular stereo recording), DPL can tend to muddy things up a bit and make it sound quite wretched to discerning ears. The advancements since the original Pro Logic came out are incredible, they're refined the technology as circuitry and chips became more powerful and less expensive and use matrix technology to simulate the surround effects. I haven't checked the specs of the Wii as they can change at any time since they're not really set in stone, but hopefully they will allow it to be Pro Logic II which is the updated version that can effectively encode non-dolby sources into 5.1 surround.
  7. The Orb should come with mounting brackets strong enough to hold it up. The biggest concern is if you're going to MOVE the computer anywhere (like to a friends house, LAN party, etc). You MUST make sure you take precautions to secure the heatsink in place (some remove it entirely before transporting) or else you will cause damage. Nothing worse than showing up with a dead super computer. Secondly, its overkill unless you're going to do some massive overclocking. If not, a good quality, smaller heatsink does just an effective job. If the heatsink is too big to fit in your case, get out the most important device one could ever own if you're building your own computer: DREMEL.
  8. Instead of having multiple monitors on the desktop, why not just have a KVM switch to go between different computers? would negate having to have 3 kb/mice on your desktop. At the very least, using the KVM to use only one kb/mouse.
  9. It would also be interesting to find out how much royalties cost for Dolby Digital vs. Dolby Pro Logic II. My guess at that would be DD is more expensive. Also another thing Nintendo might be factoring in is that while Hi-Def is certainly the "in thing" to get now and is the future of the living room, a lot of people in the world still have older stereo TV sets and no 5.1 surround system. As a console designer, do you take out the expensive cutting-edge stuff that maybe only 1% of your customers would have/use and cater a lower cost console to the other 99%? (figures made up, i'm only guessing here).
  10. You'll begin to appreciate the cost factor with Component and Audio cables being separate too...the market is saturated with good high quality cables all fighting for your pocket money, and buying good quality ones will make your system shine (as long as you have a decent TV to go along with it). I have Monster Cable's Ultra series Componenets (got it for a fraction of retail cost) on my 36" Sony Grand Wega CRT, and console games never looked more rich, vibrant, and sharp. I saw a comparison test with the best Monster Cables: Component vs. HDMI. On a hi-def TV the differences were so subtle (i mean the techie had to point out the differences it was that small) that 99% of users won't see the difference. HDMI gives accurate colour output, but of course that ends up being dependent on how the TV is setup, and everybody has different preferences on how they like to set their TV anyway. HDMI can only boast that it adds the copy protection that analog cables can't. Makes Sony happy (for now).
  11. With the exception of a few, I bet it would be hard to find anyone who is a DS owner that didn't have an original GB/C sitting around in a drawer somewhere who will never part with it. Betcha too they still have a GBA lurking around too. I still have an original Gameboy Pocket in my closet, beaten all to hell, but still works.
  12. Oohh.....I shall start re-training myself, bit rusty after all these years but i'm sure the memory of the tracks is stored back in my old cranium somewhere...
  13. Emulators on the PC are much more fun for handhelds, you get to play a 2.5" screen on a big 17" LCD! I cherish my eyesight, no wonder half the kids nowadays need glasses by the time they're out of high school. My guess is: Nintendo owns most of the stock in the eyeglasses/contact lens market. The creation of the SuperCard just ensures that enough games can fit on it to make sure the people do go half blind
  14. For $700 at release time, it'd better also make my breakfast, fetch the paper, take the dog for a walk, and wipe my butt. Sony has always played the "underground" market ever since the PSX console. They know exactly how to make a console popular, even when they have the biggest problem against them...price point! Here they have a machine that costs MORE than your typical computer system, and still only plays games and hi-def movies (and not even normal DVDs!). So, you'd need to have a hi-def system already to enjoy everything it's designed for. Every fan in the country will now go out and buy one to hack around with linux, giving Sony bragging rights that they "sold out" of their initial stock on release week only because people want to see what Sony will let them do on their machine. IMO, I think Sony will be a day late and a dollar too much vs. the 360 and Wii.
  15. Judging by the reactions from the E3 show, there's still some hidden hardware features that Nintendo hasn't talked about yet, so who knows what they still have up their sleeve! As for the idea of playing roms in the Wii, I doubt we'll be doing that anytime soon, but it really depends on how interested the console hackers are for hacking the virtual console vs. getting the commercial games hacked first. I certainly hope they have multiplayer/"live" capability with the virtual console too (as we do with kaillera), as it'd be nice to kick Sav2880's butt across the country at ExciteBike I'd almost bet on it being multiplayer, I think Nintendo wants to make sure they're on par with Xbox360 and the upcoming PS3 with online multiplayer capability, or else Nintendo will take a big knife in the heart to overlook such an important feature.
  16. Unless you got yourself a big-butt memory card, or like to have 3 or 4 of them hanging around with their space being wasted by tv shows you'd probably watch once or twice (unless you're really a boob tube junkie), imo its a total waste of time. The damn things are HANDHELD GAME MACHINES! The proof of concept they can play videos has been established, so please get back to what's important on those devices, and that's playing games. If you really want to waste your money, go get one of those godforsaken iPod video units, at least it has the storage space to hold more than a few episodes and in a better quality format too.
  17. Heh, reminds me of the shoe rack my wife uses for her 50 pairs of dress shoes in the closet. I won't tell her this one has casters on it, she'll get the idea that it's ok to roll them out around the room and i'll be pushing the damn thing out of the way all the time Of course, for someone looking for a quick easy way to clean up the floor clutter of a few consoles scattered around a TV its a step in the right direction. Sometimes you can look in the department stores' furniture sections for a tv stand, some of them are quite wide and have 3 or 4 doors of storage space under where the tv goes, you can easily tuck in a handful of consoles, all the wires, and some stacks of games. When you want to play, just open a door and bring out the controller, when you're all done, just close it up.
  18. Idle at 60C? In my years of pc building, even a cheap stock fan would keep that down around the 40C mark at idle. Forgive the following instructions if its something you are already educated in, just trying to help out by giving a few tricks: Take a look again at the thermal paste you applied to the CPU and heat sink, you could possibly: 1. have too much applied and it isnt doing its job effectively 2. too little applied and not enough surface area of the cpu is covered Also, if you have some old thermal paste on the cpu, use a few q-tips and swab off the old stuff, if its crusty use some isopropyl alcohol and get that chip nice and clean before putting on some more. A small dab (just smaller than the size of a pea) right in the middle of the cpu will give enough surface coverage. Do not try to "paint" the cpu with thermal paste, it will allow air to become trapped when the heat sink is clamped down. Try to push down and clamp the heat sink in one motion so the blob of paste will spead out evenly. If done right, you won't have a single air bubble trapped and the pressure will give an excellent thin spread of paste out over the entire chip. Hope that helps! PS: I've had a PS die on me as well even with the best voltage regulation systems, I have 3 servers and now use Fortron power supplies which are highly regarded in the server and high-end pc market.
  19. Fanzines are more important even than the mainstream mags that are being scanned and released here! Since they do have a limited release and aren't always in enough hands, they should be treated as "rare" and those people who have any kind of fanzine that frequent here should definitely find a way to get them scanned for preservation. It's easier to find mags for sale on auction sites, but I doubt you'd find a retro-fanzine for sale anywhere.
  20. only 4 gigs upped here, you need more new leeching peers!
