  1. That's surprising. I checked if the two pre-issue 100 issues were scanned but honestly didn't expect anything more recent to be missing. If anyone's up to take them just let me know and I'll ship them... Would love to help complete the collection.
  2. Unfortunately I don't have the skills or hardware to scan any of this into the expected standards. However, my goal with this buy was to give something back to RetroMags... I'd be perfectly happy to donate any of this to anyone that would like to scan them as long as they help with the shipping. If there's anything that doesn't require scanning I'll still re-sell it for a good offer. I didn't know there were any NPs that weren't already scanned.
  3. So I just got off of work and was driving through town when I spotted this old gaming store I've seen for years but never been to. The place is a literal hole-in-the-wall, with amateur Dragon Ball Z characters and gaming characters painted onto the walls and glass. I've been stopping into local gaming shops the last few months in the hopes of finding some early magazines to build up references for my various projects so figured I'd give this place a shot. I wasn't expecting much other than the usual "No, sorry. Don't carry them/they go fast.", but, to my surprise he points out a section of the shop literally stuffed full of magazines. I couldn't even go through them all. There were over 200 magazines with at least 150 uniques. The shop owner says they're $1 a magazine, but then says he just wants to get rid of it all and offers the whole collection for $20. This was something I couldn't pass up. 4. Hm. This is the earliest issue? Publication date is mid-2000 which is much too late for what I'm looking for. I was hoping for some early Pokemon codes, particularly if they dealt with the unused hex glitches that inspired some of the PokeGods. Still, I'm intrigued that GameShark attempted a gaming magazine for awhile. Their focus on codes could have carved them out a profitable and interesting niche in the gaming scene at the time.
  5. I'm on this site looking for a variety of early information, but I think a magazine for the GameShark would satisfy one area... Do any of the magazines you have cover or mention Pokemon?
  6. A very nice find, but, unfortunately, Diehard Gamefan isn't allowed on this site. The head of the magazine does not want it reproduced in any form online, so we must respect his wishes. Thank you for looking around though.
  7. I recently came across a Japanese blog that collects flyers for videogames and videogame-related products (the Nintendo Super Scope, for example) shown at various conventions/expos. The blog is new so the collection is still growing, but there's a good selection of flyers with some going back as far as the Tokyo Game Show in 1993. Check it out here.
  8. I come here for the community as well as the scans. I don't think the site could sustain itself without some sense of fraternity... People would be less inclined to donate magazines or money, feeling there's no commitment. There's no bond other than the scans, which would be offered by a site rather than real people. I enjoy the people here and the discussions. If we made this a mad rush to scan everything we have just to get it up and preserve it the project would be long-dead. It's the enjoyment other people get from these scans and post to thank and talk about it that gives incentive to continue scanning. Just my thoughts.
  9. I don't know what either of you did, but maybe, just maybe, if you act civil about it and talk to a moderator in private you can be allowed back. If you're willing to set aside your conceived issues with the site and solely contribute as far as scans, maybe we can set aside our issues with you.
  10. This book is franchise-specific rather than a general piece on video games, but Pikachu's Global Adventure always makes me laugh. Published in 2001/2 and written by 14 anthropologists and other experts, the book is essentially an examination of the rise and fall of Pokemon as a global dominating franchise. The funny part? Pokemon grosses over three times as much money as it did back then, has expanded its games to many genres and consoles, and is immensely popular among the college crowd that grew up with it. (Now retro and cool to play it again) Pokemon ended as a fad but stayed on because it was genuinely innovative and enduring. Just because it's not plastered everywhere doesn't mean it still doesn't make money all over. These "experts" jumped-the-gun.
  11. I suppose since you were deleting as much as 900 members and have been doing this for some time the difference in database-size probably is significant. It's at least one thing that can be done to keep things efficient and server costs down (?).
  12. I would think any increase in efficiency would be minuscule at best, though I'm always in favor of sacrifices.
  13. So why is it that inactive members are deleted? Obviously not all of them are potential spambots, and at least some will be annoyed if they realize they have to re-register (though it's not that difficult a task)... Is it mostly to get a semi-accurate representation of how many people are actually here?
  14. That's even worse! Despite what Zelda/Nintendo-haters may say, Link is pretty damn masculine in a "intelligent, trickster" kind of mythological way. No one would pay to see Legolas as a main character... Rather Mortensen get a dye-job. It was a very sad day for SMB fans when he passed. He played the character (not necessarily "Bowser", but the film character) rather well. I do wish that more of the climax had him in the reptilian form, and that it was done through practical effects rather than CGI.
  15. A Zelda epic is probably the most wanted and most easily video game to translate into a movie adaptation. However, if it gets the "Prince of Persia treatment" they'll cast a buff brunette guy, have him dye his hair blonde, and the movie will bomb. No one appreciated Gyllenhaal getting a spray-tan to look "ethnic".
  16. For what it was, the SMB movie was pretty good. Having three directors certainly didn't help, but the special effects were groundbreaking for the time, references to the franchise abound, and respect for the series was there. I'm just waiting on the mythical 20 minutes of footage cut prior to theatrical release. I really can't see a live-action SMB movie, though. I have a lot of nostalgia for the original movie, but any form of theatrical telling of the story should be left to the animated medium. Looks like it'll be good, if the movie is greenlit, but not so sure about the "realism". My only experiences with the franchise are my cousin playing Mortal Kombat I and II on the SNES. The hellish, almost D00M-like atmosphere of Outworld really defined the games in my mind. That rendition will be sorely missed.
  17. Crucify me, but Super Mario Bros. desperately needs that sequel, if not a complete reboot.
  18. If it's not about theft, and not about sales, what is it about? Does Nintendo just hate us? They want to spite us?
  19. I'm happy to see this finally coming through. I'm not old enough to have enjoyed the early text-controlled entries in the series, but I have fond memories of playing V and VI. The humor and story was always amazing. A true sequel, even if fan-created, is a welcome addition.
  20. Yeah, I'm not getting the usual download button. Just a terms of service page which I haven't seen before.
  21. I'm not saying they don't make money on the DS and certain titles, but Pokemon is their killer app... Many people buy the DS simply to play Pokemon. Everything else is secondary income.
  22. The idea is interesting... Four consoles on the market at once? (Depending on what the other three companies decide to do; could very well be a 2 vs. 2 competition, depending on release times) I'd be grabbing up gaming magazines just to read about the heat going on, though I don't really expect an actual console to appear. I think Sega consoles were just an experiment for the company and ultimately publishing is far more profitable and safe. I could consider maybe a handheld console from them, since the handheld market is ripe for competition. Nintendo really only holds makes its money with Pokemon and holds afloat between releases with fairly average sales. Sega could probably do it right since it's a lot more of a controlled market.
  23. Well they're not that bad. The graphics seem like the very best a GameCube could offer, but certainly aren't on par with a PlayStation or Xbox360... But that's not really a problem for me. Nintendo makes good games regardless of the quality of their graphics, which is something people should focus on more often. I just happen to think that in this instance graphics that aren't current-gen standard are fitting.
  24. Graphics are kinda crappy, but I like that. Very last gen. XD
