If you share this scan elsewhere, please say that the file is from Retromags, where anyone can download it for free. Magazine preservation is for everyone. Thank you! OK, here it is, the first issue of Famitsu – a landmark issue if ever there was one. Please be aware however, that this IS NOT a scan of the original magazine (which is super-rare and costs hundreds of dollars) but rather is a scan of a reproduction. The gray borders around each page are new to the reproduction, allowing them to occasionally print some commentary on the contents of the page. Otherwise, the content of the magazine, including the ads, is identical to the original. However, the reproduction is printed at about half the physical dimensions of the original. As such, the quality of small detail suffers somewhat – a fault of the magazine’s printing, not of the scan. The copy I had also suffered from some water damage, which is visible in a few places. Even so, unless someone is willing to scan a copy of the original #1 (I won’t hold my breath), this is probably the best we’ll get, and I feel it’s an important look at the origins of the most influential video game magazine ever published. Finally…the cover. This is where most of the damage was evident. Warped by water damage and extremely faded, the cover was in such bad shape that I opted to repaint it (something I would normally never do with a scan). It wasn’t possible to repaint all of the tiny spaces between the Japanese characters, so the text is a little muddy, but on a whole I feel the cover is much more presentable than the unadulterated scan. For anyone who finds such digital manipulation an abomination (moreso than spot clone-stamping here and there, that is), I have included the original scan of the cover as the final page before the Retromags splash page. Anyway, this issue is a special exception. I hope you can look past its faults to appreciate the history! Expect all future Famitsu issues from me to be similar in quality to the previous two I released.

  3. Thanks. Unfortunately, as stated in the item description, it's only a scan of a reproduction copy that's half the size (height/width) of the real magazine. And the reproduction quality wasn't perfect either. But it's unlikely that anyone will want to debind and scan such a valuable magazine, so it'll have to do. Luckily, our other issues are the real deal.

  4. I've gotta say...WTF is wrong with archive.org's cover selection program? They use "sophisticated technology" to automatically select the cover page when you upload a book or magazine. Invariably, they usually pick some random page around page 3 or 4. Why do we need this software? WHEN IS THE COVER OF A BOOK OR MAGAZINE EVER NOT THE FIRST #%^ING PAGE??? Every single time I upload anything, it sets some random page as the cover and I have to go in afterwards and fix it. Really not cool. On the plus side, I was able to set the preview flip book to turn the pages from right to left on Japanese mags that need it, so that's pretty cool. Anyway, here's another strategy guide, this time for the Sega Saturn edition of Treasure's shooter, Radiant Silvergun. And here's an artbook for several TYPE-MOON games, which while perhaps not huge in America, are one of Japan's most successful mega franchises, going way beyond games to dominate in most other entertainment medias as well. Combined sales of manga, novel, and anime adaptations of its games outsell the combined manga, novel, and anime sales of One Piece, for crying out loud. That's huge. https://archive.org/details/@kitsunebi77

  5. Hello everybody, I’m the owner of Gamest, Arcadia and Neo Geo Freak complete sets. I would like to donate them in order to be scanned, preserved and made available to the general public. Unfortunately this may provide some logistic problems. We’re talking about 10 big boxes, so shipping them from Italy to the US will be extremely expensive. I tried to get in touch with the guys from Retroedicola (they scan and archive computer magazine both domestic and foreign) but so far we were not able to arrange a meeting. Maybe some trusted member resident in central europe is willing to arrange something? Any other ideas?

  6. Uploaded Gamest April 1991 - Happy New Year! What makes this issue interesting is that this is the first article featuring Street Fighter 2 from Gamest, so its interesting to see some of the first images of the game. Although Wikipedia says the game came out in February of 91', so I am trying to figure out what the first Japanese magazine to feature Street Fighter 2 was. If anyone knows and can upload it, that would be awesome!
