    Attack Strategy

Here's a tip for my fellow guild members: I have discovered that the attack system rewards exp points based on a formula that uses the number of str points that you spend in an attack, the number of hp that you take from your target, the level of your target, and whether your target survives the attack. In many cases, it is actually better to leave your target alive as you will recieve more exp points. For example, I can easily kill Alien7 in a single blow of over 300 str. If I do this however, I will only receive about 125 exp points. If I attack with a force of about 250 str, I will leave Alien7 with about 50 hp but receive around 200 exp points. This is even more exaggerated with lower level targets. If I attack Eggman with 100 str, I will kill him and receive 1 exp point: not even worth the effort. If, however, I attack with about 60 str, Eggman will be left alive with about 50 hp and I will receive about 60 exp points.

    A Rare Dilemma

Yes, but as the quote in my first post noted: "The Donkey Kong games that were developed by Rare remain unaffected, since Nintendo retains the rights to the Donkey Kong series."

    A Rare Dilemma

While making my last post I thought up another topic that is worthy of discussion. Rather than write about it myself I'll just post the section from Wikipedia, which summarizes the issue quite well. The original article can be found at the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rare_%28video...mpany%29#Future "On March 26, 2006, Matt Casamassina, Editor-in-Chief of IGN Wii, had announced in his blog that Nintendo's Wii Virtual Console service, a feature which allows players to download games from the history of Nintendo, will be "Rareless" [4]. He stated that he had "met with some Rare/Microsoft staff" while attending the 2006 Game Developers Conference, who confirmed once and for all that the Virtual Console will not see any Rare-owned licenses. This means that classic Rare titles such as Perfect Dark, Jet Force Gemini, and Banjo-Kazooie (to name a few) may be absent from the download service; GoldenEye 007 has the added problem that the James Bond video game license is held by Activision, and would require both Rare and Activision's approval to be released on the system. The Donkey Kong games that were developed by Rare remain unaffected, since Nintendo retain the rights to the Donkey Kong series. However, despite the blog post, Rare or Microsoft have yet to make an official announcement regarding this particular issue." Other titles developed by Rare that this could potentially affect are: R.C. Pro-Am, Cobra Triangle, Marble Madness, Silent Service, Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, Battletoads, Killer Instinct, Blast Corps, and Conquer's Bad Fur Day. I don't really know what to say about this other than it sucks and I wish that Nintendo could work something out with Rare to make these classic titles available. What are your thoughts on this issue?

Although Nintendo has yet to announce a lot of details about the Wii, The online functionality will be something new for Nintendo's consoles (not counting the DS and Japan's cell phone connectible Game Boy Color). We know that gamers will be able to compete online, download classic games for use with the Virtual Console, and download other content such as game demos. This poll is to assess which aspect of the new online functionality gets you most excited. As a retrogamer I'm excited for the virtual console feature but if I'm to be honest with myself I'll have to admit that I'll probably have more fun competing against friends online. I haven't had much experience with online gaming aside from the DS so I'm really looking forward to that feature. The ideal situation for me would be for Nintendo to built online functionality into the classic games so that I could play N64 classics like Goldeneye (if Goldeneye is even available, see my post about this HERE), Mario Kart 64, and Dr. Mario 64 with friends who live 500 miles away. Whether or not Nintendo will do anything along these lines is yet to be known.
  6. That's a lot of jiggly flab! The skinny white guy with the rifle in his pants was pretty funny too.
  7. In Sony's defense, the PS3 more closely resembles a computer than a lot of previous VG consoles. I'm curious to know exactly how the U.K.courts define "computer". Is a PDA a computer? What about newer cellphone/pda/mp3 player combos? A few decades ago pocket calculators were probably referred to as "computers".

    Pink Ds Lite

A Jet Black DS Lite and a special Final Fantasy edition DS Lite were recently announced for Japan to accompany the pink, white, navy, and ice blue versions that are already out over there. The question that most people have now is when does the American market get the cool new colors?
  9. This is not a typo as the exorbitant price was what brought this auction to people's attention in the first place. Even though the winning bidder didn't pay, the bidding history for this item indicates that at least 3 other people were willing to pay over $100 for this badge. Why they would want to spend so much on this item is beyond me, unless it's the scam idea that I mentioned in my earlier post.

    Scratched Dvds

If the discs aren't skipping when you play them then you really have no reason to worry. DVDs are surprisingly resilient to most scratches. I've played many a Netflix/public library disc that looked like they had been rolled through a sandblasting festival. The fact that DVD Decrypter will read them with no problems is further evidence that your discs are fine. If you do have scratches so deep that they interfere with a decrypter read then you can try a disc doctor tool. Because those tools are actually abraisive to the disc, however, I don't recommend using one unless you are having serious read problems with a disc. As far as error checking tools go, Nero comes with a program called CD/DVD Speed that has a ScanDisc function.
  11. Although this isn't a Retromags release, I thought that it was worth mentioning here. I saw a torrent for the classic strategy guide "How to Win at Super Mario Bros." over at the EmuParadise BT tracker. This is a classic strategy guide that was advertised in a lot of the eaarly issues of Nintendo Power along with "The Legend of Zelda: Tips and Tactics" (which has been released by Retromags). It's definitely worth a look if you're interested in that sort of thing.
  12. It was a nice consideration for the original uploader to include our name in the torrent title on the original site. It's just too bad that it's not on Mininova since that site gets so much exposure as a more general torrent site. Anyway, no use bitching about it now I guess.
  13. Yes, a link would have been nice. Not everyone reads the details on a torrent. It would be best if future releases had "Retromags.com" or something like that in the title so that we get more people coming to the forum.
  14. I'm looking forward to seeing these issues. Let me know if I can lend a hand. Keep an eye on eBay and let me know if #2 becomes available.
  15. I saw over at Mininova today that someone has taken all of the files from the Big torrent that Retromags released on 5/12/06 and put them together in a new torrent hosted by EmuParadise. The releaser did give credit to Retromags for the original release in the torrent description. The release can be found at http://www.mininova.org/tor/368698 Here's the abbreviated description for your reference: "From EP's tracker: A butt load of Nintendo Power Magazines from Retromags.com I've extracted the CBRs and optimized the images to reduce filesize but NOTquality. They look just the same if not slightly cleaner now. Instead of CBR or PDF they are just JPEGs. Since that is what most seem to prefer. Here's what's included in the pack. If you want smaller releases go visit Emuparadise's forums at EPforums.org. I will be uploading each magazine seperate via rapidshare after this torrent is seeded decently. fun club news 001 - 1987 sep fun club news 004 - 1987 dec fun club news 005 - 1988 feb-mar nintendo power 001 - 1988 jul aug nintendo power 002 - 1988 sep-oct nintendo power 003 - 1988 nov-dec *** ***I have cut out the middle of this but it was every issue included in the Big Torrent.*** *** supplement 050 - links awakening strategy supplement 057-061 - super metroid comics supplement 060 - super metroid strategy alt Enjoy and be sure to thank the good people at Retromags. I hope they don't mind me doing this. :)"
  16. Geeksquad is essentially Best Buy's service technician division. I wonder if someone was trying to get that badge so that they could try to run a scam. I imagine that you could make a fake ad/fliers for Best Buy Geek Squad services and then steal people's stuff or personal info when they call you out to their homes. The badge would make the scam artist look very convincing.

    Grandma's Boy

I just finished watching Grandma's Boy for the first time and I really enjoyed it. It was much better than I expected. In case you haven't seen it, it's definitely geared toward the gaming crowd and worth a look if you're in the market for a good comedy that incorporates a lot of jokes about gaming, drugs, sex, and the elderly.
  19. I enjoyed the original pokemon for old school GB but haven't played much since. The series definitely has a stigma associated with it but anyone who's played for any length of time can't deny that i's entertaining. One thing that will make somone an outcast though is sincere self pity.
  20. I'm in for $5. Just sent it via Paypal.
  21. This article really does let you get a good feel for the size of the Wii. I'm glad that I won't have to worry about fitting it into my already crowded home theater system. ***HOORAY! THIS IS MY 300th POST!!!***
  22. In case you missed it, there is a story up over at xbox-scene.com stating that Microsoft is planning to release future versions of the 360 with an HDMI port. It's a rumor at this point but it would have important consequenses for HD-DVD functionality. I don't know how I feel about companies releasing modified versions of their consoles. I was shocked to learn that Nintendo stopped putting component-out ports on the later model Gamecubes.
  23. Yeah, they were actually back up and running very quickly. I think that things were back to normal within a week or two of the disruption.
  24. I don't have any experience burning toi dual layer media myself but the people on the forum at videohelp.com could probably help you out. There's also a blank DVD media quality guide at nomorecoasters.com.
