  1. WAIT! WAIT! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIT!!! I still want to play Shenmue, though.
  2. Picking a favorite is hard. But 7 posts and no mention to Conker's Bad Fur Day??? It is not only one of the best N64 games, it is one of the best games ever!
  3. Just to be clear, it wouldn't bother me at all. I was just thinking about the trouble you guys would have.
  4. I do not want to sound offensive but, have you ever stopped to think about all the trouble you guys will have for something that (I think) no one will care about? It might be cool having that info for completeness sake, but that is pretty much the only reason I could come up with. I mean does the number of pages of the next A Song Of Ice And Fire book matter? Will you decide if you are going to read it or not based on that?
  5. Torrent! Torrent! Torrent! humm.... Torrent!
  6. Apparently some one has found a couple of box full of classic SEGA stuff in Thailand http://meiobit.com/184271/sega-esquecido-armazem-tailandia-decadas/ For those who do not speak Portuguese, it says that there were 20 sealed Mega Drive II boxes and also several copies of 18 Mega Drive games, all sealed too, all in a couple of boxes inside a warehouse in Thailand.
  7. Sorry, but there is really no reason to use PDF. Ever! I think the only reason we still see it being used as a container is because the fella who is doing the favor of archiving the pictures simply did not know a better way to achieve what he really wanted, which was to pack all those images on a single file and be able to read it. That is OK, not every one is a developer and know how hard it is to parse a PDF file. Been there, done that. It is awful. ADOBE keeps pushing useless features on the format that helps no one at all. Just use Acrobat Reader, one might say. I say thee nay! No one should have to install something so big just to be able to see a couple o pictures. Thank god there are free alternatives out there like the lightning fast (and small) Sumatra PDF. Just like PDF, the zip format is out there in the public domain. It still is not the ideal format for what we want, which is a way to store a bunch of compressed files in a single archive, but it is good enough. As long as the guy packing the files do not do something stupid as trying to compress the data. And there is also RAR, which is also good enough. Both have plenty of libraries capable of decoding the data, and RAR Labs even provides one for us for free, unlike ADOBE. Many comic book readers are able to handle these archive formats. And unlike Acrobat, they were build for that sole purpose, to display a sequence of image files. It is no wonder they do a better job. And we must not forget that, if anything else fails, just extract the image files and do whatever you want with them. Try doing that with a PDF. Possible, but annoying, to say the least. But it would still be even better if the major comic book readers out there united and agreed upon a no frills pack format. A simple one, because the ones already there (specially in the *nix world) have too many useless features for us, making the implementation too complicated. What we need is simply a format that had something like MagicValueIdentifyingTheFile, NumberOfFiles, OffsetOfFirstFile, FileSize1, FileName1, ..., FileSizeN, FileNameN, FileContent1, ..., FileContentN No compression, no unnecessary features, nothing. A simple format capable of storing just a sequence of files, with a little header to allow us to jump to the file we need. Then we could give that format a "standard" extension and ask it to be included on WinRAR and 7zip. And that is it. All comic book readers would be able to load the data even faster, the implementation would be trivial, so there would be no more need to rely on external libraries or waste time trying to figure out an archive format and since it would be on (at least) two of the major archive creators/extractors out there. And if one was not happy with his archive, all he would have to do was to open it using 7zip, extract the files and do whatever he wanted with it, just like we are capable of doing with CBR and CBZ. By the way, before someone complains about what I told about not using compression because without it their lossless files would be too big, 3 little letters for you: PNG Summing up: PDF sucks (in general) and sucks even more as a stream archiver. Do not use it. Never. Never!
  8. As I said before, I still vote for someone with unlimited bandwidth to spare to get hold of an old 486 that is doing nothing but getting dust, place all magazines there, create a torrent, set the speed to 10KB/s, set super seeding mode and leave it there. It will take A LOT of time for the downloads to complete, but at least went it does, we will have a lot a new seeders. And if they managed to stay in the swarm for so long, chances are that they have completely forgotten about that torrent, so they are less likely to hit and run
  9. Nice!!!! The greatest FPS ever is Quake World, but among the "2.5D" ones, Duke is among the very best.
  10. I liked how you went for the polite way of saying things and opt for "is a little counter-intuitive" instead of the more popular "was a dumb thing to do and it sucks so much when we compare it N64's"
  11. Fact. Sorry OP, if IMDB registration process was not so annoying, the only thing this movie would get from me would be a bad score. A really really bad score. So... luck you?
  12. As a fan of the genre, may I say that your list is way incomplete. You got to add, at least (in no particular order): - Peace Keepers (Rush and Beat 3, or something like that in Japan) - TMNT (arcade and the NES's) - The D&D games (arcade) - Vendetta (arcade) - Captain Comando (arcade, SNES) - Punisher (arcade) - Armored Warriors (arcade) - Double Dragon 3 (NES) - Alien vs Predator (arcade) - Sonic Blastman (SNES) If you have not done so, play Peace Keepers (or the Japanese version, which is even better). After playing once, it is probably a good idea to read a FAQ and learn that you can make the game even better by using Street Fighter like movements (like the Haduken motion when throwing opponents) and also trigger the main character "pissed of" mode. PK is easily one of the best of beat em ups of all times. Since we are talking about the SNES, please add "Turtles in Time" to TMNT 4. Make that title complete. TIT is the best TMNT game out there, specially the SNES version. If I am not mistaken, Hyperstone Heist for the Mega Drive was very similar, but not on the same league. Nice touch by adding Super Double Dragon to the list. I thought I was the only one who had ever played it. Easy game, but very cool. How many beat em ups you know where you could not only defend, but actually counter the enemy after grabbing a punch? And the counters were great! Honorable mention to Simpsons (arcade) and also to Combatribes (arcade and SNES). This last one is pretty fun if you have unlimited quartes to spend on it. And those are only from the top of my head. I will help you adding more if I remember something else.
  13. Yes, totally. I was trying to play Super Mario 3 using the XBox's. Climbing vines and entering pipes is pretty much impossible. You would not believe how many lifes I have lost on the pipe world. It is as if Microsoft listened to what people were saying about the impossibility of executing diagonals on the current Nintendo controllers and capitalized on that. They would deliver a diagonal capable digital pad even if they had to sacrifice other less important features, like up, down, left or right. And so they did.
  14. SNES N64, if we were talking only about 3D games. But overall, SNES still is the winner. It is from a time where NINTENDO was capable of building a decent D-Pad. N64's was not that good and it all went downhill from there, except for the first NDS (phat). It is simply impossible to execute diagonal movements nowadays.
  15. That depends solely of the server. On most I ever used, "years" is not a good word to describe how long the file stay up. You guys do realize that is very, very easy trace anything back to you, doesn't matter if you are using torrents, direct HTTP, FTP, etc. It does not even matter if you are behind a transparent anonymous proxy, one that do not tell it is a proxy to the server and do not keep nor forward your IP address. Do you remember that old Hackers movie, the one with Angelina Jolie? When they said something like "what? You did it from your house? Dude the FBI/NSA/WhatEver3LetterAgency will get you". Many things on movies are not true, but that is not one of them. If you think you are safe because your IP is not showing on the "peerlist" or whatever, think again. Your false sense of security is based on the other peers not knowing you IP. But it is not the other peers you should be afraid of. The powers that be, the ones who will take you down and to the court, are not among the other peers. They do not care if your IP is being public displayed or not. If they wish to take you down they will simply trace it all back to you. Unless you have a cable connected directly to the server, which I highly doubt you do, your connection is passing through an ISP, and an ISP knows to what MAC address a certain IP was lent, they know what requests came from there. Of course they know. They have to know that, otherwise how would they fulfill it. That is simply how things work. Nothing new about it. And that is all what it take to get to your house. 1- The target server is 1.1.1.1 and this IP belongs to ISP A 2- Alright ISP A, give me a list of IP that have connected to 1.1.1.1. 3- 2012/03.31 20:00:00 server 1.1.1.1 received a request from IP 2.2.2.2 4- IP 2.2.2.2 belongs to ISP B 5- Alright ISP B, give me the MAC to which IP 2.2.2.2 was lent. OK, now give me the street address of that MAC. 6- Ding Dong. "Hi my name is Mr Smith, I work for the Interpol and you are under arrest" Anyway, that is just my 2 cents about the subject. Please do not consider this just a another whining "buahhh, now I am going to have to pay" post. After, as I said before, I already have almost every old mag I wanted. I just wanted to give you guys a heads up about how weak is the shield you are using. Anyway, you guys should do whatever you think is best for the site. And whatever you decide, I wish you good luck and may everything workout for the best.
  16. Does anyone know where I can find a picture or a video of the infamous letter that came with Star Tropics, for the NES? While I have been able to find a few, not a single one of them showed the letter after being dipped in the water, which is something you are required to do in order to proceed in the game (when wet, a code appears on the letter). I have been itching to see it ever since I found about this. PS: no, I am not doing this because I need the code. The code can be easily found on the internet.
  17. That is pretty much the speed I've downloaded everything I got from here. At least I think it was from here. The way I've discovered you guys was through a big torrent file full of old EGMs and I think the torrent comment pointed to here. It took a while, but I survived.
  18. Fact. No arguing with you there, but perhaps we could try something on the torrent lines, at least until the MU dust settles. My suggestion is: - make torrents for "packs" instead of single issues. Like "all EGMs" or "EGM #1 to #50". - use the Retromags Server as a seeder only when the torrent has none. And make it so that the global upload speed is very slow. I mean 1KB/s slow.
  19. I love this game. I never knew there was more than one version. It seems that I have the second one, since my monsters usually take more than one hit to kill and I can buy equipment from the shop. I also never knew there were so much expansions for it. Here, at least back in those days, there were only 2: "Kellar's Keep" and "Return of the Witch Lord". The only thing I really hated was that the mage was not very useful. I mean he had so few spells. If at least some of them could be used more than once...
  20. You will not regret. It is not simply the same game with Japanese text. You will see. I really wish I had enough free time to take some (serious) Japanese lessons so I could understand what they are saying, though. Ah, sorry for taking 4 months to reply! hehe
  21. Hum... you should also try that soccer game they made, specially the Japanese version. I forgot the game name, but the U.S. version was called, if I am not mistaken, World Cup, but was not as cool as the original. The original has an story mode that is great. Probably the best "non simulation" NES soccer game. In the matter of fact, not only NES...
  22. What? They made 3 Lolos? And here I was thinking I was the only person in the world that had ever played the first one... I'd go ahead and add DW 1 to that "I did not like it at all" list. Since I don't like to play a game before playing the ones that came before it, I had to play DW1. Oh boy, it was annoying, even if we consider using an emulator to fast forward the endless experience grinding the game requires. And lets not start about those unlit dungeons that required you to buy dozens of torches and also draw a map to get through them (or having a Rainman like memory). I hated that (although I know some people that really miss buying quadriculated sheets of paper for drawing the maps). At least now I am finally done with it and I plan to never look back. FF1, which I have played on the same grounds (got play the original ones before playing the rest of the series) is WAY better than DW1. Even though it still requires some experience grinding, it has many more elements that make the trip much more enjoyable.
  23. I have read that book and, while it was not what I was expecting, mister Kent does mention, in a lot of depth, the games that came before Pong.
