  1. played this a little bit last night in honor of the SNES turning 25. this is the game that led to me re-re-buying a Super Nintendo like 18 months ago.
  2. i, too, grew up with it on the n64 and sunk countless hours into it. i have since acquired the PSX version as well, but it's always the n64 for me!
  3. good luck in your hunt, Alex! the NES is my all-time favorite system. i'm sitting at about 160ish games (haven't counted in a while). i have no designs on getting a complete run (over 700!) and just grab what i'm interested in playing. i also go the cartridge-only route. Mainly due to price, plus what am i gonna do with 160 cardboard boxes? i've got no room to display them, so may as well not even bother. yeah, the NES-Classic may drive prices up a little bit, but my guess is that the difference will be negligible. That mini system has a fantastic lineup of games on it, so it should satisfy most people. agreed, kitsunebi. Emulation is absolutely the easiest and cheapest (and in many ways, best) route to go if you're just interested in playing the games. You've got every available game at your fingertips (including games that weren't released in your region AND prototypes/hacks/homebrews) and they run smoothly. i just never got into emulation much, for whatever reason. i love my cartridges.
  4. wow, that's nuts. yeah, i'm not an RPG guy, so that list doesn't look like much to me. how the original Mario Bros game makes that list is mind-boggling. i'm surprised that Punch-Out! isn't ranked on the top 100 list you quoted. has boxing ever been popular in Japan? i don't follow it, but i'm not familiar with any Japanese boxers. i guess that could easily be a reason. not surprised that MM4 is the lowest of the Mega Man games. it's generally regarded as "more of the same" even here in the States, but like i said, i love it. i just read the complete list. it's insane. no Ninja Gaiden, no Bubble Bobble, no Kid Icarus? yet they have like 4 DragonBall Z games. utterly bizarre.
  5. this was posted before my time, but i can't resist but join in: 1. The Legend of Zelda. -THE game that spawned my love of video games. 2. Super Mario Bros. 3. -an all-time great, and for a reason. 3. Punch-Out!! -specifically the Mike Tyson version, but nothing against Mr. Dream 4. Mega Man -i mean the entire series is excellent, but my vote is for #4, i owned 2 & 3, but had to rent #4, which made the challenge and intrigue greater. Plus you can charge. 5. Bomberman -a game that i never played as a kid and didn't discover until i was in my 20s, but fell in love with completely the second it started. What an amazing game. 6. TMNT 2: The Arcade Game -after the travesty that is the first Turtles game (don't get me wrong, i played it endlessly), this game is exactly what i needed. 7. Double Dragon -most argue that DD2 is superior, but i grew up with the first and love it completely. 8. Contra -come on, who doesn't love this? 9. Adventure Island -i know now that this is a port of Wonder Boy from Sega, but i didn't at the time. 10. Bubble Bobble -my wife's favorite game, and it holds a special place in my heart as well. So cute and fun but some stages are just brutal i have an honorable mention spot for Metroid. i've never fully delved into the game to give it an accurate ranking, but i always enjoyed it. Some day, i will sit on my basement floor and hand-draw maps for it as i navigate my way through those tunnels and doors and fall in love with it. That day is not today. oh man, there are SOOO many games that i love that didn't make the cut. Kirby's Adventure, CastleVania, Dr. Mario, Little Nemo, Alfred Chicken, and the list goes on.
  6. people have been talking about a "bubble" since at least 2012. the reality is that prices have been an an upswing since about 2010. People that grew up playing these games are now fully in the "i have more disposable income and i want all the things i had as a kid" period of their life. That, along with things like YouTube videos, 'overlooked gems' lists, and falling supply have all led us to the point that we are at now. Generally, there's more knowledge and interest in the 'rare' titles, and as people discover them, they also discover that they want them, continually rising the price. it is completely possible that in 5-10 years, the "bubble will burst" or prices will go down. But that is absolutely not a guarantee. edit: i'm specifically talking about the NES, although it is also relevant for most other systems. The Super Nintendo is at the early point of its price increase, although i feel that it is on a much faster/higher upswing than the NES took. The Sega Genesis is still at a pretty low point, although i foresee that will change in the next couple years.
  7. i have the second issue of "Where's Waldo" magazine. i believe they only made two. when i find the 1st one for very cheap, i will probably scan them and toss them online somewhere. highly doubt there's much demand, but you never know.... i also have a metric ton of digital comic books preserved. you can find pretty much anything. the few things i've looked for and been unable to locate, i picked up on the cheap and made them available.
  8. ^^ the fist issue of NP is easily the most sought-after issue of its entire run. I would argue that it is the most recognizable video game magazine issue there is. otherwise, i feel like it's more personal preference. there's a bunch of recognizable EGM or GamePro covers, but it's going to vary based on which games/systems you're a fan of, when you were exposed to VG magazines, and age.
  9. if this is shameful, then i'm fully in this predicament as well. i'm at least 3-to-1, probably closer to 4-to-1. this ratio means i've played at least a full level or set of lives or whatever. if you only count games that i've fully embraced and played for at least an hour or two, that number is easily closer to 10-to-1. at best. i always go back to the same games as well. for NES, that means Zelda 1, Punch-Out!, Double Dragon, and Adventure Island
  10. i'm definitely a big fan of the Throwback stuff. i drink more Mt Dew than Pepsi, but when i have the choice i always grab the real sugar stuff. that being said, i don't get that "sticky teeth" feeling with this Crystal Pepsi. i say give it a shot while you can. worst case scenario, you're out $1.79
  11. there's nothing more infuriating than when a company owns a copyright on something but refuses to use/monetize it. it's like, obviously there's a demand for these vintage mags, why not digitize them and sell them for a buck or two apiece? it's better than making no money. or hell, use these (obviously already digitized) versions. if you refuse to make money off your own IPs, then of course people are going to get their hands on it some other way.
  12. sorry to report that it is indeed HFCS. still tastes pretty much like regular pepsi. draw your own conclusions.
  13. it was officially released on Monday, but nobody in my home town carried it. until today, i was able to find it at one grocery store so picked a couple up.
  14. still loving mine. i actually haven't used them (or the Wii-U itself) much in the last few months, but definitely looking forward to Waluigi & Daisy when they're released in November. tangentially related, in October the new Skylanders game comes out, and one of the figures is Crash Bandicoot. i'll probably pick him up to display with my amiibos.
  15. i don't spend a lot of time creating a franken-troller in my mind, but i always loved the n64 controller when it came out. i thought nothing would top it. but then they made the GameCube, and those controllers just feel so damn comfortable and intuitive, they rank at the top of my list.
  16. this. hell, i didn't get a SNES until WELL into the n64 lifespan, and didn't get a Sega Genesis until the PS2 was already out. that's why i have such an affinity for the NES. the 3DO sounded exotic and cool, but it was so far out of my price range that i never gave it any serious consideration.
  17. the short answer is YES. i would absolutely take a good amount of time off, travel, do all the stuff that seems outlandish to us peasants. once the novelty of that wore off, i would most likely pick up a part-time job at a convenience store near me, just to get out of the house a couple times a week. otherwise there would be a legitimate chance that i would turn into a hermit. hell, i already try not to leave the house if i have a day or two off.
  18. very possible! i just image searched it, and the box/cartridge don't look familiar at all, but the gameplay stills definitely ring some bells. this very likely is what i remember. thanks for clearing that up!
  19. i'm still waiting for Sonic 4, Episode 2 to be available on the Wii or Wii-U.
  20. skimmed thru it. the letters bit was fun, but most of the rest was pretty dumb. thanks for sharing, tho, i'm keeping a copy with my digital NP issues just for kicks!
  21. oh my god if i had seen that issue with Sonic and Mega Man on the cover while it was on the newsstand i would have snatched it up immediately and treasured it forever.
  22. i always talk myself out of buying one of these because it's so impractical. yes, says the guy who has a Virtual Boy, a ROB, and a Power Pad (the last of which i've never used or even tested). i know that at some point i'm going to have to pick one up, just because of the novelty of it, but it's. just. so. bad.
  23. like the majority here, i did not have a Genesis growing up. But, my best friend did, and we played it quite a bit. He also had a 32x and a Sega-CD (and YES, we totally made the Sega CDX!) Here's what i can remember playing at his place (in no particular order, but with thoughts given): Golden Axe. not sure if he had the 6-pak cartridge or a stand alone Golden Axe, but this is the game we played the most. still love it. i always equate this game with the Genesis because of so many good afternoons, right after getting out of school for the day. Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic & Knuckles. all classics, of course. Sonic 2 was my favorite until the debut of Knuckles, who i immediately supported. Virtua Fighter. not sure which #, or if this was the 32x version or not. this is definitely not a very good fighting game, although it was hyped as the first 3d fighter. i remember we both got pretty bored by it because we were used to MK2 and SF2, but we amused ourselves by trying to force the other to fall out of the ring. whatever it takes, right? some boxing game where you could create your own boxer. i wanna say it was Ready 2 Rumble but i may be mistaken there. he had created a fighter named Icicle who was completely blue. we didn't play this one much because he always kicked my ass at it. Comix Zone. oh man, this game is so friggin' difficult, but a lot of fun. i'm a big comics fan, so the animation and frame-by-frame setup was so cool to see. when i bought a Genesis a year or two back, this was one of the first games i sought out. and then there was Lethal Enforcers. it sounds awesome, it's based off an arcade game, what could go wrong? the answer: everything. we actively tried to convince ourselves that it was a good game, but it just wasn't happening. it's a shooter game, made for use with those plastic guns. but we didn't have those. so you scrolled around the screen with the d-pad and used a or b to shoot. it was tedious, and stupid, and might have been ok with a Zapper, but just no. So maybe technically not a terrible game, but my experience with it definitely was.
  24. my phone won't support the app (i use a cheap tracfone) but all of my friends are talking about it. i'm so happy that Nintendo is innovating their way into the public conscience again.
  25. i think this is awesome and i really hope it sells a ton. that being said, i won't be picking one up. i'm a big NES fan and have a top-loading system and 165ish games (including 28/30 offered here). but i have had so many people point this out to me, and then mention that they'll be picking one up that it makes me happy. i DO plan on grabbing a controller tho. will be awesome to finally getting around to playing Mega Man 9 and/or 10 on the virtual console with an actual NES controller.
